The game launched on October 13, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Its official materials explain the combat systems at a high level, but do not establish exact inputs, parry timing windows, or stamina costs, so check the controls and learn timing in your current build.
How the opening combat loop works
Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike from One More Level, published by Lyrical Games. Its combat asks you to read an opponent, pick a response, and manage the resources that let you stay alive. The publisher describes parrying and counterattacks as core parts of the game, alongside weapon variety and left-hand Transmutations.

- Read the attack. Watch an enemy’s rhythm before committing. Choose one response rather than reacting with a string of attacks or evasive actions.
- Defend deliberately. Try a parry against a predictable attack, or use another defensive movement if that suits the situation. Confirm the control mapping in the game’s settings or control display; button layouts can vary by platform and configuration.
- Use the opening. A successful parry can give you a chance to counter. Treat that as an opportunity, not an invitation to spend every remaining bit of stamina.
- Reset your position and reassess. After your response, watch what the enemy does next and keep enough stamina available to adapt.
The official overview does not publish exact parry frames, attack-cancel rules, stamina costs, or recovery rates. Do not rely on a fixed timing number or assume an action can be interrupted unless you have confirmed it in the launch build.

How to manage stamina without giving up your next move
Attacks and evasive actions are described as stamina-consuming in secondary beginner guides, but precise launch-build costs and regeneration rates are not established in the official material. The useful beginner habit is to avoid chaining actions automatically. Spend stamina when you have a reason, then leave room to attack again or defend.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
- Do not empty the bar by default. A long attack sequence may leave you without the capacity for a response. Stop when the opening closes instead of completing a combo just because you started one.
- Make each action answer a question. Attack to punish a clear opening; evade or parry in response to a threat. If you are not sure what the enemy is doing, pause your offense and observe.
- Notice what is actually causing failures. If you repeatedly run out of stamina while attacking, shorten your commitment. If defensive responses are the problem, practice choosing a single response rather than spending stamina on several in quick succession.
These are pacing principles, not claims about a particular stamina threshold. The available sources do not establish a universally safe number of attacks or a precise regeneration window for the current build.
How to practice parrying
Parrying turns defense into a possible counterattack, but the exact timing window is not documented in the official overview. Begin with a predictable enemy and practice responding to one attack at a time. Confirm the control assigned to parry in your own setup before trying to learn timing.

- Watch the enemy’s attack animation and identify a repeatable cue.
- Attempt the parry against that attack rather than trying to parry every movement.
- After a successful parry, use the counter opportunity if it is safe; otherwise, keep your distance and learn the pattern again.
- If the attempt fails, change one thing at a time: your timing, your distance, or your choice of response.
A fan-maintained combat guide describes a counter window after a well-timed parry, but it may include demo-era information. Treat it as a practice lead, not as authoritative launch-build timing data.
Choose a weapon for the situation, not a universal ranking
The publisher says weapon variety and matching weapons to enemies reward a thoughtful approach. It identifies the Claymore as a slow, high-impact two-handed blade and the Musket as a longer-ranged, more powerful firearm than William’s pistol. Those descriptions point to different ways of engaging; they do not establish that one is always the best beginner choice.
| Option | Officially described role | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Claymore | Slow, high-impact two-handed blade | Consider whether you are comfortable committing to slower attacks and whether the encounter gives you time to use them. |
| Musket | Longer-ranged and more powerful than William’s pistol | Consider whether keeping more distance suits the encounter; the overview does not establish ammunition or damage values. |
Pick the option whose pace and range you can read comfortably, then adjust when an enemy or encounter makes that approach awkward. A fan-maintained guide also makes claims about the Rapier, including a lack of blocking and a reliance on precise parrying. Because that guidance may reflect an earlier build, verify the Rapier’s behavior in the current game before building a strategy around it.
What Transmutations add to your options
Transmutations are left-hand abilities that broaden the combat loop beyond weapon attacks. The publisher describes them as tools for buffing, debuffing, dealing damage, and traversal, and names Fire, Shield, and Grapple as examples. Think of them as situational options: use the ability that answers the immediate problem rather than assuming every encounter calls for the same one. The overview does not provide exact effects, costs, or upgrade values.

How Lantern upgrades and Ambers support survival
Lanterns let you spend Catalysts to improve health, stamina, or parry. Ambers help customize your build. Instead of searching for an unsupported “best” early build, use your recent failures to decide where an upgrade might help: survival pressure points toward health, frequent stamina shortages toward stamina, and difficulty making parries work toward parry. These are ways to frame your choice, not guarantees that an upgrade will solve a particular encounter.

Be cautious with specific demo-era claims about boss difficulty, parry timing, or balance. The developer says the public demo used bespoke chapters and was not representative of final polish and balance. The official announcement also reports development work on combat readability, hitboxes, staggering, boss difficulty, and performance. General habits such as watching an enemy and avoiding wasteful stamina use remain useful, but specific timing or tuning advice may not carry over to the launch build.
