In Old School RuneScape, the Abyssal whip is reported as a drop from abyssal demons, greater abyssal demons, and the Abyssal Sire. The straightforward farming route is killing demons; the Sire is a separate boss option. The community-maintained OSRS Wiki lists a 1/512 drop rate for each demon type, while the retrieved Sire listing confirms the whip as a drop but does not state its rate.
Where does the Abyssal whip come from?
The Old School RuneScape Wiki’s Abyssal whip entry lists three sources:
- Abyssal demons: reported drop rate of 1/512.
- Greater abyssal demons: reported drop rate of 1/512.
- Abyssal Sire: listed as a source; the retrieved entry does not establish a drop rate.
These are community-wiki-reported game mechanics, not official Jagex guidance. A 1/512 rate is a per-kill probability, not a guarantee or a kill-count target: a player can receive the whip sooner, later, or not within any particular number of kills.
How to farm abyssal demons
The demon route is the direct option if you want to hunt the monsters rather than fight a boss. The OSRS Wiki abyssal demon assignment entry lists 85 Slayer for an abyssal demon assignment and names the Slayer Tower, Abyssal Area, and Catacombs of Kourend as locations. That establishes assignment eligibility and listed locations; it does not establish that every variant or encounter requires an active task.

A Slayer training guide discusses barraging and using a Venator bow on abyssal demon tasks, and notes the possibility of profit from whip drops. Those are community-guide recommendations, not official or independently verified current methods. Check current game information before choosing a setup; the drop chance alone does not establish which approach is faster or more profitable for your character.
Can you get the whip from Abyssal Sire?
Yes. The OSRS Wiki’s Abyssal Sire entry lists 85 Slayer and includes the whip among the boss’s drops. This makes Sire a distinct alternative to ordinary demon hunting, but the available entry excerpt does not provide a Sire whip rate, expected value, kills per hour, or a complete current boss strategy. There is not enough established information here to say that Sire is the faster or better route.
Which route should you choose?
| Route | What is established | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|
| Abyssal demons | 85 Slayer is listed for an abyssal demon assignment; named locations are the Slayer Tower, Abyssal Area, and Catacombs of Kourend. The whip rate is reported as 1/512 for abyssal demons and greater abyssal demons. | Whether a task is required for each variant or encounter, kills per hour, and which combat setup is best. |
| Abyssal Sire | Listed as a whip source, with 85 Slayer listed for the boss. | The whip drop rate, kills per hour, expected value, and a complete current strategy. |
Choose demon hunting if you want the direct monster-farming route, particularly in a Slayer-task context. Consider Sire if you specifically want the boss encounter and meet its listed Slayer requirement. The available drop information does not support a reliable speed or profit comparison between them.

The Slayer requirement cited for abyssal demons is an assignment requirement; it should not be read as proof that every abyssal demon variant can only be fought on task. Likewise, the Sire listing’s 85 Slayer figure is reported by a community reference page, not presented here as an official Jagex statement. Drop rates and access rules can change, so verify the current game reference before planning a long grind.
