According to Prima Games, you receive it after the main mission “In Search of Past Glory,” so it is a late-game reward. Until then, use the Hilka for its reported longer detection range or the Bear for clearer directional feedback.
The detector guides cited here were published in 2024. GSC later released Update 2.0 in August 2026 and listed Update 2.0.5 on September 10, 2026, but its accessible official pages do not say whether detector mechanics or acquisition routes changed. Treat specific route details below as guide-reported and verify them in your current game if they differ.

Which artifact detector should you use?
“Best” depends on whether you want to find a signal from farther away or identify an artifact’s position precisely. Prima Games’ December 2024 comparison favors the Veles for pinpointing, while reporting that the Hilka has a longer range than the Bear. The Echo is the basic early-game option.
| Detector | What it tells you | Guide-reported acquisition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Echo | Blue flashes and beeps become faster as you approach an artifact; no range figure is stated in the cited guides. | Prima Games reports it through “There and Back Again,” or from traders if they stock it. | Early-game artifact hunting. |
| Hilka | Numeric distance readout; Prima Games reports detection up to 100 meters. | Budmo quest stash at the Power Transmission Pylon, or vendors, according to Prima Games. | Finding a signal while covering ground. |
| Bear | A directional dial with green bars that fill as you get closer; Prima Games says its range is shorter than the Hilka’s. | “A Sign of Hope” at the Noontider base, or vendors, according to Prima Games. | Following a visual proximity cue toward an artifact. |
| Veles | Radar-like display marks artifacts with red dots and anomalies with icons, according to Prima Games. | Reward after “In Search of Past Glory,” according to Prima Games. | Precisely locating an artifact once you have progressed far enough. |
The Hilka’s “up to 100 meters” figure is a 2024 guide-reported mechanic, not a developer-confirmed specification. The table reflects the cited guides, not a post-Update-2.0 in-game verification.

How to get the Veles detector
- Progress through the main story until you complete “In Search of Past Glory.”
- Claim the Veles reward associated with that mission. Prima Games identifies this as the Veles unlock route.
- Equip the Veles when searching anomalies. Its red artifact marker is the feature that makes it the strongest choice for pinpointing among these detectors.
It is not an early-game pickup. If you have not reached that mission, use whichever interim detector you have and switch to Veles when available.
Where to get the Hilka before the Veles
Prima Games reports two routes to the Hilka: a stash connected to the Budmo quest or a vendor purchase. For the quest route, look for the stash at the Power Transmission Pylon. The guide warns that the third stash you visit will be empty, so visit the pylon stash before checking a third stash.
The same guide reports the Hilka at vendors for about 4,000 Coupons. That is a December 2024 guide-reported price and may vary by game version or current vendor stock; confirm it in your game rather than treating it as a current fixed price.
How to use each detector effectively
Echo: follow the changing signal
Equip the Echo near an anomaly field and watch its blue flashes while listening to its beeps. Epic Games Store’s November 2024 guide says the signals become more rapid as Skif approaches an artifact. Use that change to narrow your search rather than expecting a numeric distance readout.
Hilka: scan from farther away
The Hilka’s numeric distance display makes it useful when you want a range estimate while moving through an area. Once the distance begins to fall, keep adjusting your approach and use the reading to judge whether you are closing in.
Bear: follow the directional dial
Watch the green bars on the Bear’s dial: Prima Games describes them as filling as you get closer and providing directional feedback. Its reported range is shorter than the Hilka’s, so it is more useful as an approach aid than as the longest-range option.
Veles: pinpoint the artifact
Use the Veles display to distinguish the artifact marker from anomaly icons. Prima Games describes the artifact as a red dot on its radar-like screen, making the Veles the clearest choice when precise localization matters.

Prima Games’ December 2024 guide reports the following acquisition routes. Because the game has since received major updates and the accessible official patch information does not confirm detector-specific changes, check the relevant quest and vendor details in your current version.

- Echo: “There and Back Again,” or a trader if the detector is in stock.
- Bear: “A Sign of Hope” at the Noontider base, or a vendor. Epic Games Store’s 2024 guide also says advanced detectors such as the Bear can later be purchased at Rostok.
- Veles: Complete “In Search of Past Glory” for the reported reward. Prima Games says vendor resale becomes available afterward.
What Update 2.0 means for detector advice
GSC announced Update 2.0 and the Cost of Hope expansion on August 19, 2026, with a stated launch date of August 20. The official patch archive lists Update 2.0.5 dated September 10, 2026. Those official pages establish the update timeline, but the accessible material does not specify whether artifact detector behavior, quest rewards, or vendor routes changed. The detector comparisons and routes in this guide therefore remain attributed to the 2024 guides rather than presented as confirmed post-update details.
