Where to find the Treasure Magnet
The Treasure Magnet is post-Skeletron content. You can pursue it through either of these routes:

The listed rate applies to each eligible chest or lock box, not to an attempt to find a crate. Which route is more convenient depends on your progression and fishing setup; neither is established as universally faster.
Why the Treasure Magnet is useful
The Treasure Magnet is an accessory. Its in-game tooltip says, “Increases pickup range for items.” The wiki lists the pickup range as increasing from 2.625 tiles to 12 tiles while equipped, but cautions that these technical figures come from Desktop 1.4.1.2 source code and may not reflect the current version. Version notes
The item was introduced in Desktop 1.4.0.1. In Desktop 1.4.4, it changed from primary to secondary loot in Shadow Chests and Obsidian Lock Boxes, and became a Hand of Creation crafting ingredient. Console and Mobile version histories also list 1.4.4 as the Hand of Creation recipe update. Official Terraria Wiki
