They can redeem it in Steam to add the game license to their account. A key is not a gift you can create from a game already in your Steam library; if you are buying a game on Steam, use the Store’s gift option when it is available.
What a Steam key is—and isn’t
Valve describes Steam keys as “single-use, unique, alphanumeric codes” that customers activate to add a product license to their account. They are generally issued to developers for distribution through retail and other stores, rather than generated on demand from a game in a player’s library. That distinction matters: gifting a game bought through Steam, sharing an unused key, and sending wallet funds are three different transactions.
Choose the right way to give the game

If you already have an unused key
- Check the source and compatibility. Make sure the key is legitimate, unused, for the intended game, and compatible with the recipient’s region and package. Check any territory information provided by the seller or publisher.
- Send it privately. Treat the code like a one-time voucher: whoever redeems it first may claim the license. Avoid posting it publicly or sending it where unintended people can access it.
- Have the recipient redeem it in Steam. They should use Steam’s product activation flow and follow the prompts. If activation fails or Steam reports a region restriction, contact the seller or publisher that issued the key. Steam Support says it cannot refund keys purchased from third-party retailers; see Steam’s key FAQ and Steam Support’s region guidance.
If you are buying the game on Steam
Open the game’s Steam Store page and use the gift option in checkout if it is offered. Follow the current prompts to select the recipient or delivery method, add a message if available, and pay. Steam notes that some titles cannot be gifted, in which case the gift option will not appear. The current process and any regional eligibility are determined at checkout; do not assume every title or cross-country gift is eligible. See Steam’s gift card and gifting information.

Valve’s 2026 gifting changes were reported to include guest checkout, email delivery, gifting from a shared wishlist, and gifts to friends in other regions when checkout permits. Windows Central’s July 24, 2026 report says email gifts must be accepted within 30 days and the recipient must live in the purchaser’s country. Because availability and conditions can vary, follow the terms shown in your current Steam checkout rather than relying on a delivery method being available in every case. Send an official Steam digital gift card instead of a key. Choose an amount, select a friend, and complete the purchase through Steam’s digital gift card page. Once accepted, its value is added to the recipient’s Steam Wallet, where it can be spent on games and other eligible Steam purchases. Steam converts the value to the recipient’s currency.

How long does a Steam gift have to be accepted?
Steam Support says an unaccepted game gift is cancelled and refunded after 30 days. The reported email-gifting flow also has a 30-day acceptance period. If you used email delivery, tell the recipient to check the address you entered and accept within the period shown in Steam.
