If it responds only while connected, that points toward a power or battery problem but does not prove the battery is the cause. Stop charging and seek support if the controller is swollen, unusually hot, leaking, melted, or visibly damaged.
Try these safe power checks first
- Connect it by USB-C. Use a cable and power source you know work with another device. Check the cable, controller port, and connector visually; do not force the plug.
- Try the charging dock, if available. This gives you another charging route to check. No source establishes a required charging duration, so there is no reliable universal wait time to promise.
- Press the Xbox button. If the controller remains unresponsive, try a second known-working cable and power source. If it works only while connected, a depleted or failing battery is possible, but so are a charging-port, connection, or circuit-board fault.
These are sensible initial checks, not a guaranteed Microsoft troubleshooting procedure. If you notice heat damage, melting, a swollen case, or an unusual odor, do not keep charging or attempt to open the controller.
If the controller turns on only when connected
This symptom suggests the controller may not be holding or receiving power normally, but it does not identify one failed component. A battery fault is one possibility; the USB-C port, internal connection, or board could also be involved. Replacing the battery will not fix a damaged port or board.
If the controller powers on, check for a firmware update using the supported Xbox console or Xbox Accessories process before considering hardware work. The available guidance does not establish a firmware recovery procedure for a controller that cannot power on, so an update is not a fix to rely on for a completely unresponsive unit.

Choose service or a battery repair
Check Microsoft service before opening the controller
Microsoft lists the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 as eligible to start a service order. Sign in to the account associated with the device, select the registered Xbox, choose “Start order,” then select the accessory category and issue type. The service route is described at Microsoft’s Xbox device service page. Availability, warranty coverage, cost, and turnaround depend on your account and region.
Consider DIY battery replacement only if the diagnosis and skill level fit
Microsoft sells a replacement battery identified as identical to the original battery in Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Model 1797: Microsoft’s replacement battery listing. Confirm the model match and current availability before buying; the listing’s price and stock can change.

Battery replacement requires substantial disassembly, not a simple external swap. iFixit’s battery replacement guide describes removing the housing and midframe before reaching the battery and warns that the plastic clips require significant force. Microsoft’s repair instructions include safety precautions and repair procedures. If you are not experienced with careful electronics disassembly, service is the safer option.

Microsoft’s repair guidance says to cease repair efforts and contact Xbox Customer Support if a device has burned or melted components, heat damage, or a case separated because of a malfunctioning battery. Do not charge or open a controller that is swollen, hot, leaking, melted, or visibly damaged; contact support for next steps. Do not assume an online replacement guide makes a damaged battery safe to remove.

Microsoft’s battery guidance gives a normal operating temperature range of 0–60°C (32–140°F) and warns against excessive heat and temperatures outside that range. It also cautions against dropping or throwing the lithium-ion battery.
