Choose the friend and amount, then complete the purchase through Steam. They must accept the gift before its value is added to their Steam Wallet.
Send a digital Steam Gift Card
- Sign in to Steam and open the Steam Gift Cards page.
- Choose Select Amount, then Choose Friend.
- Complete the purchase using an accepted payment method other than your Steam Wallet balance.
Steam sends the card to the selected friend. Its value is added to their Steam Wallet only after they accept it. The balance can be used for games and microtransactions; Community Market purchases require the recipient’s account not to be limited. What if your friend lives in another country?
Some countries restrict sending or receiving digital gift cards. Select your friend and proceed through Steam’s checkout to see whether the gift is permitted; Steam displays applicable restrictions there. Do not try to bypass a regional restriction. For an eligible international gift, Steam automatically converts the card value to the recipient’s currency. Steam’s FAQ covers digital cards, while its gift card redemption page explains currency conversion for physical cards and wallet codes.
Other ways to contribute to a friend’s Steam spending

What happens if the gift is declined?
Steam refunds a declined digital gift card purchase. It first attempts to return the payment to the original payment method; if that is not possible, it refunds the giver’s Steam Wallet. Steam also warns the recipient before acceptance if the gift would trigger a Community Market restriction. If a warning appears, the recipient can wait until the date shown; if there is no warning, Steam says accepting the card will not cause that restriction. Details are in Steam’s FAQ.

You cannot buy a digital gift card with funds already in your Steam Wallet; checkout requires another accepted payment method. Wallet funds are not transferable cash: Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says they are non-refundable and non-transferable, have no cash value, and can only be used on Steam.
