How do you start ordinary fishing?
- Learn Fishing. Open the artisan tree and learn the Fishing skill. Exact unlocks and interface labels can change between builds.
- Put the ability on your hotbar. Open the skill book and place Fishing on an available hotbar slot.
- Go to freshwater. Take a rod to a lake or river, equip it, and use the Fishing ability to cast.
This is the simpler, more relaxed way to fish. It does not use the node-and-boat setup described for Sport Fishing. A player help thread also discusses the skill-and-hotbar workflow, but individual forum reports are anecdotal; if the steps do not match your client, check the current in-game skill book and prompts. How does Sport Fishing work?
Sport Fishing is an active fishing activity built around a water node and a fish-catching minigame. The guides describe it as requiring a boat, a rod, chum to activate the node, and the Sport Fishing ability.
- Look for a fishing node. Seabirds circling over the water are described as a clue that a node is nearby.
- Bring a boat and chum. A rowboat or designated Sport Fishing boat is described as necessary. Use a bucket of chum at the node to activate the fishing opportunity; the development summary says nearby players can share it.
- Equip a rod and cast with Sport Fishing. Use the Sport Fishing ability at the activated spot.
- Respond to the fish. When it bites, follow the on-screen movement prompts. The summarized development discussion describes moving the rod in the direction the fish moves and wearing it down until it stops resisting.
Node behavior, required equipment, and interface details are version-sensitive. The available guides do not establish durable catch odds or hourly income, so treat claims about rarity or yield as provisional rather than guaranteed. Freshwater or saltwater: which should you choose?
Freshwater is described as safer and lower-paying. Saltwater Sport Fishing involves travel into open seas, where PvP is possible, and is described as offering higher-value catches. That potential reward comes with the risk of losing fish or ship cargo to other players.

- Choose freshwater if you want the safer option or are learning the basics.
- Choose open water if you are prepared for PvP exposure and want to pursue the comparatively more valuable catches described by the guide.

What can you do with the fish?
The guide describes carrying catches, loading them onto a mule or into ship storage, and selling them to Sport Fishing Vendors. It also describes Titanic fish as potential Freehold display trophies. The official Early Access announcement says catches can be hauled ashore for gold or future trophy crafting; its wording presents trophy crafting as a future use, so do not assume that crafting feature is currently available. Do you need lures, and does Fishing progress unlock more?
The guide says lures can be crafted or bought from Sport Fishing Vendors, and that higher-tier lures improve the chance of rare or Titanic fish. It also says Fishing ranks unlock additional rods, ships, and gathering options. These are guide claims, not controlled measurements: no verified odds, required ranks, or progression rates are established here. Why might the fishing bar stay still?
A player help thread mentions a blue bar that remains static after casting, but it does not establish one universal cause or a verified fix. Check that you have learned and slotted the appropriate Fishing ability for the activity you are attempting, are using the correct ability for ordinary versus Sport Fishing, and are following any prompts shown by the current client. How current are these fishing instructions?
Ashes of Creation is in active development. The official Early Access announcement, published December 10, 2025, said Steam Early Access was scheduled to begin December 11, 2025, described Sport Fishing across rivers, lakes, and open seas, and warned that progression, systems, and features remain subject to change. The exact live build and fishing balance on October 8, 2026 have not been verified here, so treat unlocks, labels, node behavior, and balance as version-sensitive. Official Early Access announcement
