Save recovery or reset options for last: some can erase local data.
Start with SteamOS updates and a restart
For widespread instability or performance problems, install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck. Valve recommends this as an early step in its Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide. Menu labels can change between SteamOS versions, so look for the system update controls in Settings if the exact wording differs.
Rule out Desktop Mode applications
If applications are unstable, exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode, restart, and test again. This helps determine whether a background app is contributing to the issue before you change deeper system settings.
Consider Beta software only as a test
If the issue remains, Valve says you can opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether a change not yet shipped to the stable channel addresses it. Beta software is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix. Valve also points users to SteamOS and Steam Deck discussions and Steam Support.

Work out whether one game or the whole Deck is affected
Test more than one game or application. If only one Steam game has trouble, focus on that title’s compatibility, settings, and installed files. If multiple games or applications are affected, continue with system-level troubleshooting rather than assuming one game’s settings are responsible.
Check the game’s Steam Deck rating
On the game’s Steam Store page, review its Steam Deck compatibility rating and any listed requirements. Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Playable means the game may need manual configuration; Unknown means Valve has not tested it, not that it is confirmed incompatible. The rating is a useful starting point, but it does not guarantee that every update or configuration will behave identically.

Try a different Proton compatibility tool if appropriate
If the game’s compatibility setup may be involved, open the game’s Library properties, select Compatibility, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version. Valve describes this as a troubleshooting step in its software guide.
Changing the compatibility tool can cause Steam to download the Windows build of a game if you had installed only its Linux build. Allow for that possible download, and retest the game: results vary by title and version.

Reduce graphics load
Lower the game’s graphics preset or adjust demanding settings individually, then see whether performance becomes more stable. Valve’s general PC performance guidance notes that game requirements, settings, background applications, available memory, and resolution can affect performance. It is general PC advice, not a Steam Deck-specific diagnosis, so make one change at a time and judge the result in the game you are troubleshooting. No particular frame-rate improvement is guaranteed.
Verify the affected game’s installed files
For a game that crashes, fails to launch, or appears to be missing content, use Steam’s file verification tool before moving to recovery options. Valve says the check may take several minutes and can report a file as failing verification when it is a local configuration file that should not be replaced.

- Open the game in your Steam Library.
- Open its properties and select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish.
These are Valve’s steps in Verify Integrity of Game Files. If the game still crashes afterward, use its compatibility and graphics options as the next game-specific checks.

Valve lists the Steam Deck LCD display at a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz and the OLED display at 90 Hz. Setting an application above the cap for your model does not improve performance and may drain the battery faster, according to Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

Adjust refresh-rate or frame-rate limits as a per-game trade-off: try a setting the display can support, then check whether it gives you the balance you want. There is no single setting established here as a universal way to prevent crashes.
Check the dock only for an external-display problem
If the problem occurs only when the Deck is docked to an external display, check Steam’s display settings, the selected input on the display, and the cable and dock or hub. Also review the game’s own display settings. Valve notes that some high-resolution or high-refresh-rate combinations are sensitive to the capabilities of the cable and display, and that graphics or image-quality issues may call for in-game adjustments.
A compatible USB-C dock or cable is relevant when diagnosing that docked setup, not as a general fix for handheld performance or crashes. See Valve’s Docking the Steam Deck guide for connection guidance.
Use recovery options only after simpler checks
If updates, a restart, third-party app isolation, and the relevant game checks have not resolved the issue, Valve documents rollback, repair and recovery, factory reset, erase-user-data, and full re-imaging options in its SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide. Their effects differ, so read the description of the specific operation before selecting it.

- Full re-image: replaces user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems with stock SteamOS.
- Erase user data: is explicitly destructive.
