To haggle in Oblivion Remastered, open a merchant’s Barter screen, select what you want to buy or sell, then adjust the offer in Haggle. If the merchant refuses, make the offer less aggressive and try again: a refusal lowers that merchant’s Disposition by one point.
How to haggle with a merchant

Speak to a merchant and choose Barter.

Select items from the merchant’s stock to buy, or items from your inventory to sell.

Open Haggle and adjust the offer. A more favorable price for you is a harder offer for the merchant to accept.

Confirm the offer. If it is rejected, move the setting toward an easier offer before retrying.

The original game manual describes a slider for setting how easy or hard the bargaining offer is. Remastered’s exact controls may differ, so follow the on-screen prompt for your platform rather than relying on the original PC or console button instructions: Bethesda’s original Oblivion manual.
Why merchants reject your offer
Three factors affect how far you can push a haggle: your Mercantile skill, the merchant’s Mercantile skill, and the merchant’s Disposition toward you. Higher player Mercantile, lower merchant Mercantile, and higher Disposition make a harder offer more likely to succeed. A refused offer lowers that merchant’s Disposition by one point, according to the original game manual. Disposition is an attitude score from 0 to 100 in that manual; race, personality, reputation, faction affiliations, and past actions can affect it. If a merchant already has a low opinion of you, repeated aggressive attempts can make later bargaining harder.
How to improve your next offer

Raise your Mercantile skill. Better Mercantile can let you use a more favorable haggle setting. Bethesda’s Remastered leveling guidance identifies Mercantile as the skill that affects buying and selling prices.

Improve the merchant’s Disposition toward you. The original manual lists several influences on Disposition, including personality, reputation, affiliations, and past actions.

Adjust gradually after a refusal. Each failed offer costs one Disposition point, so ease the offer rather than repeatedly testing the same aggressive setting.

The original manual says that a slider point accepted by a merchant remains consistently accepted unless that merchant’s Disposition falls. Treat this as guidance for the inherited mechanic, not a guarantee of identical behavior in every Remastered platform or build.

No authoritative Remastered source establishes a single slider percentage that works with every merchant. The original manual explains the factors behind acceptance, but it does not establish one universal threshold for the remaster. Bethesda’s July 16, 2025 Update 1.2 notes reviewed here list gameplay and interface fixes but no documented haggle change; that does not establish whether other builds or later updates behave differently. Use cautious trial and adjustment rather than relying on a fixed number.
