When your fantasy quarterback is on bye, replace him in your active lineup before your league’s player-lock deadline. Start a suitable rostered backup if you have one; otherwise, compare available quarterbacks and decide whether a one-week waiver pickup is worth the claim, FAAB, and roster spot.
1. Confirm the bye and your league’s deadlines
Check your roster and the quarterback’s schedule to confirm that his NFL team is on bye. A player on bye will not play that fantasy week, so an active lineup slot containing him will produce no points. NFL.com advises managers to check schedules and set their lineups; its guidance says players lock when their NFL game starts, though your platform and league configuration may set transaction or lineup deadlines differently. See NFL.com’s beginner guide and NFL.com’s team-management guide.
Note when waivers process as well as when players lock. A claim that is not submitted in time may not clear before the games begin.
2. Check your roster before making a move
See whether you already have an active, suitable backup. If so, compare him with the quarterbacks you could acquire rather than assuming a new pickup is better.

In a standard one-quarterback league, carrying a second quarterback all season can use a bench spot that might otherwise go to another position. Whether that tradeoff makes sense depends on your roster size, lineup requirements, scoring and league settings; do not assume your platform’s default lineup applies to a custom league.
3. Compare available quarterbacks
If you need a replacement, check the waiver wire and then free agents if your platform allows it. Judge candidates for this particular week, not by name or season reputation alone:

- Expected role and status: Is the player expected to start? Has current news changed that expectation?
- Scoring fit: Consider what your league rewards, including passing touchdowns, rushing production, yardage and bonuses.
- Matchup: Use current weekly matchup analysis as context, not a guarantee. A quarterback described as “streamable” is not automatically a good start against every opponent.
- Cost: Weigh the waiver priority or FAAB you would spend and the player you may have to drop.
- Future usefulness: Consider whether the pickup could help after this bye, cover another bye or provide injury insurance.
NFL Fantasy’s weekly quarterback analysis illustrates how streaming decisions depend on the alternatives available and the matchup. Its Week 4, 2026 quarterback article, published September 30, 2026, applies to that slate; its player-specific advice should not be carried forward to another week. The source does not establish a universal scoring formula or projection threshold for choosing a replacement.

Check your league’s acquisition rules before submitting a claim. Leagues may use waiver priority, FAAB or another process, and adding a player may require dropping someone. NFL.com describes priority and FAAB in its beginner guide.

For a one-week rental, compare the likely benefit of the start with the value of the player you would cut and the priority or budget you would use. A quarterback with potential value beyond the bye may justify a larger commitment than a strictly temporary option, but there is no universal bid or cost threshold: roster needs and league rules determine the tradeoff.
5. Submit the move and recheck your lineup
- Submit your waiver claim or add a free agent early enough for your league’s processing schedule.
- After the move clears, confirm the quarterback is on your roster and placed in an eligible starting slot.
- Before kickoff, check the player’s status and your lineup again, making any needed change before the applicable lock.
Current injuries, depth charts and matchup information can change during the week. Refresh them before settling on a starter. For a specific start recommendation, you also need the current week, your scoring and lineup settings, your roster and the quarterbacks available in your league.
