A single VPS cannot serve unlimited traffic. The safest way to survive a sudden game-launch crowd is to keep cacheable requests at the edge, shed expensive work deliberately, and have a tested path to more than one origin. Resize the server only after you have reduced avoidable origin traffic; use horizontal scaling when demand will last or one machine remains the bottleneck.

Understand the ceiling before players find your site
A VPS has finite CPU time, memory, disk I/O, network throughput, database connections and worker slots. Once any one of those reaches saturation, adding requests does not create capacity. Queues grow, latency rises, retries multiply and a site that looked healthy a minute earlier can begin returning 5xx errors.
Video-game sites commonly encounter abrupt demand when a major trailer goes live, a patch is released, a free weekend starts, a streamer links to a guide, or a store page becomes widely shared. Those events are usually legitimate, but their request pattern can resemble an attack: many clients arrive at once and repeatedly ask for the same URLs.

The practical objective is not an arbitrary “requests per second” target. It is a documented safe operating envelope for your own application, including its real page sizes, endpoint mix, authentication behavior, database queries and geographic audience.
Measure a baseline and a failure boundary
Collect normal and peak observations for at least these signals:
- Requests per second and concurrent connections.
- Latency percentiles (at minimum p50, p95 and p99), not just an average.
- 4xx and 5xx rates, uptime probes and successful page transactions.
- CPU utilization, load average, memory pressure, swap and process count.
- Disk I/O latency and throughput.
- Inbound and outbound network throughput, packet rate and connection rate.
- Database connections, query latency, lock waits and pool exhaustion.
- Queue depth and the age of the oldest queued job.
- Cache hit ratio and origin fetch rate.
- Bandwidth consumed against the VPS provider’s allowance or limit.
Record what users experienced at each level. An application may still report 99% availability while p99 latency makes a page unusable, or it may show low CPU while a database connection pool is exhausted. Set alerts from observed headroom rather than generic percentages. For example, alert when p95 latency exceeds the level at which your game pages stop being useful, when the error budget is consumed, or when the database has only a small number of free connections left.
Load-test the real request mix
Use a staging environment or infrastructure you own to replay representative traffic: cached article pages, uncached searches, login or account calls, image downloads, comments, APIs and any checkout or entitlement flow. Vary client geography, connection reuse, request bodies and cache state. Increase load gradually until the first resource saturates, then test recovery after the load stops.
Document three numbers for every important route: a normal target, a safe maximum, and the response to return above that maximum. AWS Well-Architected guidance specifically recommends establishing throttling values through load testing; traffic above capacity should receive a throttling response instead of being allowed to overwhelm workers and upstream services.
Put an edge in front of the VPS
A CDN or reverse proxy is the fastest way to stop a traffic burst from reaching a single origin. It can serve repeated requests from nearby points of presence, terminate connections, filter unwanted traffic and collapse simultaneous misses into fewer origin fetches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAWS describes cache hierarchies, request collapsing and Origin Shield as ways to prevent many requests from reaching the origin. Its guidance also emphasizes that maximizing cache-hit ratio is crucial for both performance and DDoS resilience.

Cache game content aggressively where it is safe
Give static files—images, JavaScript, CSS, fonts, downloadable patch notes and other versioned assets—long cache lifetimes. Put a content hash or release version in each filename so you can cache it for a long time without serving an old file after deployment.
For non-personalized HTML, consider a short microcache. A page cached for even a few seconds can absorb a large launch burst when thousands of visitors request the same URL. Where the application permits it, stale-while-revalidate lets the edge serve a recently cached response while one request refreshes the object in the background. Do not cache pages containing private account data, cart contents, moderation controls or user-specific entitlements unless the cache key and privacy behavior have been proven safe.
Make cache misses inexpensive
Normalize cache keys so harmless variations do not create thousands of copies. Exclude tracking parameters that do not change content, but keep parameters that genuinely select a game, language or platform. Enable compression and HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 at the edge where supported. Use request collapsing so concurrent misses for one article become one origin request rather than a stampede.

Public article and asset requests should be eligible for caching; authenticated APIs should normally pass through with strict per-route limits. If a page mixes public content with a small personalized fragment, render the public shell from cache and fetch the private fragment separately.
Keep the origin private
Once traffic is supposed to arrive through the edge, prevent direct access to the VPS. Cloudflare’s DDoS guidance recommends allowing origin access only from its published IP ranges and enabling as much caching as practical. Apply the equivalent allowlist at your provider firewall or host firewall, and remove old DNS records or alternate hostnames that reveal the origin address.
Origin restriction is not a substitute for application controls: a compromised credential, an allowed administrative path or a cache-bypass query can still consume resources. Protect administration with separate authentication, a VPN or an allowlisted management network.

| Approach | Time to activate | Traffic absorbed before origin | Best workload | Per-user or per-route control | State and database impact | Observability and escalation | Geographic reach | Recurring cost and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDN or reverse proxy with WAF | Often minutes if configured in advance; DNS changes can take longer | High for cacheable HTTP and filtered requests; limited for uncached dynamic work | Static assets, public pages and repeated reads | Strong edge rules, WAF conditions and route-specific limits | Little origin state for cache hits; dynamic requests still consume application and database capacity | Edge logs plus origin metrics; mitigation depends on the provider’s controls and support process | Broad, with points of presence near users | Adds a recurring service charge and cache-policy complexity |
| Larger single VPS | Usually quick if the provider supports resize; a reboot or migration may be required | None beyond the larger machine’s new ceiling | Workloads that are not cacheable and need a simple architecture | Application and host controls remain available; edge filtering is absent unless separately added | State stays local, but one database and one host remain a bottleneck and failure point | Simple host telemetry; provider escalation is still needed for network attacks | Limited by one origin’s location and network | Predictable upgrade cost, but the next spike can exceed the new ceiling |
| Multiple origins behind a load balancer | Hours to days unless already automated | Capacity grows with healthy instances; edge caching can multiply the benefit | Sustained demand and uncached dynamic traffic | Load balancer, WAF and application can combine limits | Requires shared sessions or stateless tokens, shared assets, connection-pool planning and a database that can scale | More metrics and failure modes, but health checks and per-instance telemetry reveal partial failures | Can place origins in several regions if the application supports it | Higher operational and infrastructure cost; deployment and state handling become more complex |
Use the CDN or WAF first when the burst is mostly cacheable HTTP traffic. Resize vertically for an immediate, temporary increase when the application is otherwise healthy and the provider can perform the change safely. Design a second origin and load balancer when demand is sustained, when uncached routes dominate, or when losing one machine is unacceptable.
Prepare throttling that protects expensive paths
Rate limits should reflect endpoint cost and client identity, not one global number. A search query that performs several database joins should have a lower allowance than a cached article. Login, password-reset, comment posting, search, inventory or entitlement APIs need different policies from public GET requests.
Define limits by route and identity
- Use a per-IP limit for anonymous traffic, while accounting for shared mobile carriers, schools and offices.
- Use account, API-key or session limits for authenticated clients so one user cannot consume the whole pool.
- Use a global per-route ceiling to protect the upstream service even when requests come from many addresses.
- Give trusted internal jobs a separate identity and quota rather than bypassing all protection.
- Return an explicit 429 response with a useful
Retry-Aftervalue when a client exceeds its allowance.
AWS says requests below the throttling rate are processed, while those over the defined limit are rejected with a return message indicating that the request was throttled. That predictable behavior is preferable to letting requests wait until workers, sockets or database connections fail at random.
Use a leaky bucket or token bucket deliberately
NGINX implements request limiting with a leaky-bucket algorithm and supports per-IP or per-server connection limits. A conceptual configuration looks like this; choose the rate, burst and shared-memory size only after load testing your application:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=public_api:10m rate=5r/s;
limit_conn_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=per_ip:10m;
server {
location /api/search {
limit_req zone=public_api burst=20 nodelay;
limit_conn per_ip 10;
proxy_pass http://app_backend;
}
}
burst permits a short queue above the steady rate; nodelay rejects excess work immediately rather than making every request wait. For a slow endpoint, a smaller burst and a lower rate may protect the database better. For a cheap, cacheable endpoint, a higher burst can improve user experience. Verify that the proxy sees the real client address from a trusted edge; otherwise every visitor may appear to come from the proxy itself.
Decide what to shed
During an incident, protect the routes that preserve the core experience. You might temporarily disable live search suggestions, personalized recommendations, image transformations, comment posting or nonessential background jobs. Keep a queue for slow, retryable work and cap database connections so queued requests cannot consume every slot. A static maintenance page should be ready to serve without the application stack.
Do not silently drop requests that users need to understand. A 429 means “try again later because this client is limited”; a 503 means the service is temporarily unavailable. Include retry guidance and avoid immediate client retries that create another synchronized burst.

Build a two-stage scaling plan
Stage one: vertical relief
When CPU, memory or network throughput is the clear bottleneck and the provider can resize safely, move to a larger VPS. Check whether the operation causes downtime, changes disk or network limits, requires a reboot, or changes the public IP. Resize before the machine is completely saturated, and watch the application and database after the change rather than assuming the new tier solved every constraint.
A larger server does not remove a single capacity ceiling. It also does not fix an overloaded database query, an unbounded queue, a connection leak or a request flood that bypasses the cache.
Stage two: horizontal capacity
For recurring launch traffic, place two or more application instances behind a load balancer. Health checks should remove an unhealthy instance without sending users into a failure loop. Scale on CPU, memory, network I/O and application-specific signals such as request latency, queue depth or active sessions; AWS describes these as valid inputs for autoscaling decisions.
Make instances replaceable:
- Store sessions in a shared store or use stateless, signed tokens.
- Put uploaded images and generated files in shared object storage rather than one server’s disk.
- Run database migrations separately and make deployments backward compatible while old and new instances coexist.
- Give each instance a bounded database pool; adding web servers must not create an unlimited number of database connections.
- Use idempotent jobs and a shared queue so a retry does not duplicate a purchase, comment or entitlement update.
- Warm caches and verify that a newly added instance can serve real traffic before increasing its weight.
Horizontal scaling improves sustained capacity but adds deployment, state, database and observability complexity. Automate the path before a major event; building it for the first time while users are waiting is not a reliable emergency tactic.

Follow a runbook rather than making several unmeasured changes at once. Keep one person responsible for coordination and record timestamps, actions and metric changes.
- Confirm user impact. Check synthetic page probes, p95 and p99 latency, 4xx and 5xx rates, successful login or API transactions, and reports from users. AWS recommends health checks and alarms across application and infrastructure metrics.
- Check saturation. Inspect CPU, memory and swap, disk latency, network throughput, open connections, worker queues, database pool usage and cache-hit ratio. Identify the first exhausted resource.
- Compare request shape with the baseline. Break traffic down by URL, method, status, referrer, geography, user agent, authenticated state and cache status. A game-launch crowd often concentrates on a recognizable article, trailer or patch page; a flood may request abnormal paths or methods.
- Serve what is already cached. Increase safe cache lifetimes, enable stale serving where supported, and stop cache-bypass parameters from creating a new origin request for every visitor.
- Protect expensive routes. Tighten WAF rules and per-route limits, cap concurrency, pause nonessential jobs and queue slow work. Return deliberate 429 or 503 responses with retry guidance.
- Increase capacity after offloading. Resize the VPS if a larger machine will address the measured bottleneck. If demand is likely to continue, add origins behind the prepared load balancer or activate provider autoscaling.
- Restrict the origin. Confirm that only the edge and approved management networks can reach the VPS. Remove exposed alternate hostnames and verify firewall changes from an external network.
- Communicate and preserve evidence. Record the incident window, graphs, configuration changes, top URLs, source distribution, response codes and provider notices. Keep a clear rollback point for every change.
Tell a flash crowd from a DDoS attack
The distinction is operational, not merely semantic. A legitimate flash crowd can still overwhelm a VPS and needs caching, throttling and scaling. A DDoS attack adds hostile or nonsensical traffic and may require provider-level filtering that an application cannot perform.
| Signal | More consistent with a flash crowd | More concerning for DDoS | Immediate action |
|---|---|---|---|
| URLs and methods | Requests concentrate on a newly announced game page, trailer, patch notes or API feature and use expected methods | Abnormal paths, methods, query strings or repeated requests that bypass the cache | Cache the hot public content; challenge or block clearly invalid paths and methods |
| Referrers and user agents | Recognizable social, search, community or streaming referrals with ordinary browser mixes | Missing or implausible referrers, repetitive user agents or automation patterns | Apply identity- and route-aware limits; avoid blocking an entire shared network based on one signal |
| Geography and sources | Concentrated in the regions where the announcement spread | Unexpected global distribution, rapidly changing source addresses or spoofed-looking patterns | Use edge geography and WAF telemetry; escalate to the provider when volume exceeds the origin’s controls |
| Protocol and packet behavior | Normal HTTP connections and request sizes | Unusual protocols, packet sizes, connection rates or non-HTTP traffic | Use managed mitigation and provider network controls; application code cannot absorb a volumetric flood |
| Origin logs | High but understandable demand for a small set of resources | Unexpected request and bandwidth graphs, severe slowness or outages, and abnormal origin logs | Cloudflare lists these as common DDoS signs; preserve logs and engage support |
Cloudflare identifies slowness, outages, unexpected request or bandwidth graphs and abnormal origin logs as common DDoS indicators. None is conclusive alone. Compare the full request shape with your baseline and look at edge telemetry, not just the VPS access log; a volumetric attack may be blocked before it reaches the origin.

Use managed mitigation for network-scale attacks
WAF rules and application rate limits are appropriate for HTTP abuse that reaches the edge. They cannot make a single VPS receive an unlimited packet flood. Use a provider’s managed DDoS service or upstream filtering for attacks that exhaust links, connection tables or provider thresholds.
If the provider reports a mitigation limit or blackhole, contact support with the attack’s start and end times, source geography, protocols, packet sizes and affected services. DigitalOcean recommends supplying those details so support can improve firewall rules or advise on architecture. A blackhole may protect the wider network by discarding traffic, but it also makes the service unreachable until the condition is removed; treat it as an escalation event, not a normal rate-limit response.
DigitalOcean reported in 2022 that 89% of observed attacks lasted less than one hour. That is historical observation data, not a prediction for a particular incident, so retain protection and monitoring after the first quiet period.
Monitoring that leads to action
Dashboards are useful only when an alert has an owner and a next step. Connect alerts to an incident runbook that names the person who can change edge rules, resize the VPS, contact the provider and approve a maintenance page.
Alert on impact and cause
- User impact: synthetic availability, successful transactions, p95 and p99 latency, timeout rate, 4xx and 5xx errors.
- Application saturation: active workers, queue depth, request duration by route, cache misses and rejected requests.
- Infrastructure saturation: CPU, memory and swap, disk latency, network throughput, packet rate and open connections.
- Data-layer saturation: database connections, lock waits, slow queries, replication lag and storage capacity.
- Security and edge: WAF actions, rate-limit responses, origin fetches, cache-hit ratio, top source networks and protocol distribution.
Set warning and critical thresholds from the load test. A warning should leave enough headroom to enable a cache rule or add capacity; a critical alert should map to a protective action such as disabling a feature or serving the maintenance page. Include the dashboard links, commands and rollback instructions in the runbook.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Recovery and the post-incident record
Do not remove limits or restore every feature the instant graphs improve. First confirm that latency, error rates, database pools and queues have returned to normal and that the traffic shape is stable. Relax one control at a time while watching for a second surge caused by retries or delayed jobs.
Preserve edge logs, origin access logs, WAF events, load-balancer health checks, VPS metrics, database telemetry and provider tickets for the entire incident window. Keep timestamps synchronized so you can correlate a request surge with a CPU spike, cache purge, deployment or provider action.
Write down which resource saturated first, which cache rules produced hits, how many requests were throttled, which users saw 429 or 503 responses, how long recovery took, and whether the provider imposed a limit or blackhole. Turn each finding into a concrete change: a new load-test scenario, a safer cache key, a lower-cost query, a larger connection pool only where justified, a new alert, or an automated scaling step. Rehearse the runbook before the next launch on infrastructure you control.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- If the same public URLs dominate traffic, configure edge caching, request collapsing and stale serving before increasing the VPS size.
- If uncached requests saturate one measured resource but the event is short, resize vertically and apply route-specific limits.
- If demand is expected to continue or one machine cannot meet the tested envelope, deploy multiple origins behind a health-checked load balancer.
- If traffic has abnormal paths, protocols, packet sizes or source distribution, involve managed DDoS mitigation and the provider instead of relying on application code.
- If the database is the bottleneck, reduce query cost and concurrency; adding web servers without database protection can make the outage worse.
- If you cannot state the safe rate, cache policy, escalation contact and rollback step, you are not ready for the next traffic spike.
