Online abuse can happen in voice chat, text chat, direct messages, friend requests, party invitations, livestream chats, or a separate messaging app connected to a game. The safest response is a sequence, not a debate. Ending contact reduces the chance that the situation grows while you collect what you need for a report.

- Disengage: leave the match, pause play, stop replying, or hand the device to a trusted adult.
- Document: record dates, times, usernames, locations in the game, and what happened; save relevant screenshots and messages.
- Block or mute: stop the account from contacting you and tighten privacy settings.
- Report: report the particular message, chat, profile, experience, or other content in the game and on any separate service used.
- Escalate: involve a parent, guardian, school or youth-safety professional, platform safety team, regulator, or law enforcement when the conduct is serious.
Menus and labels change between games, consoles, PC launchers, and chat services. Use the current help page for the service you are using rather than relying on an old menu path.
1. Stop the interaction and get support
Leave instead of trading messages
Do not try to win an argument with someone who is bullying you. Exit the match or voice channel, pause the game, turn off notifications, and stop replying. A response can give the person more material, keep you exposed to abuse, or make it harder to identify the original messages. Do not forward abusive messages to friends for entertainment or retaliation.

Bring in a trusted adult
For a child or teenager, tell a parent, guardian, teacher, counselor, coach, or another trusted adult as soon as practical. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises stopping play and talking with an adult when a child encounters upsetting or inappropriate behavior from other players. A calm adult can help preserve evidence, adjust settings, and decide whether the incident needs outside reporting.
Ask neutral, practical questions
When supporting a child, ask what was said, when it happened, which account sent it, whether the person requested personal information, and whether anything was shared. Ask without blame. A child may delay reporting if they expect punishment for using chat or for breaking a household rule, so focus first on safety and facts.
2. Decide whether anyone is in immediate danger
Most insults and unwanted messages should be handled through blocking and platform reporting. Some conduct needs a faster response. Treat a credible threat of imminent physical harm as an emergency and contact your local emergency service. Do not wait for a game moderator to decide whether someone is dangerous.

Warning signs that require escalation
- Specific threats to hurt or kill someone, especially with a time, place, weapon, or other concrete detail.
- Stalking behavior, such as repeated contact across accounts, attempts to locate someone, or showing up offline.
- Hate-crime conduct or threats aimed at a protected characteristic.
- Sexually explicit messages, images, requests, or grooming behavior involving a child.
- Attempts to obtain an address, school, phone number, passwords, location, photographs, or other identifying details.
StopBullying.gov’s U.S. guidance says, “When cyberbullying happens, it is important to document and report the behavior so it can be addressed.” That same guidance advises contacting law enforcement for violence threats, stalking, hate crimes, or sexually explicit material involving a child. Those categories and reporting routes are U.S.-specific; elsewhere, use local emergency, law-enforcement, child-protection, or online-safety regulator resources.

3. Preserve evidence without prolonging contact
Evidence is most useful when it shows who did what, where, and when. Save it before blocking if that is safe and does not require another exchange with the person.
What to record
- The account name, display name, user ID, clan or group name, and profile link if the service provides one.
- The date and time, including your time zone when it matters.
- The game, server, lobby, match, map, or chat channel where the conduct occurred.
- A short factual description of the behavior, including repeated incidents and any request for personal information.
- Names of witnesses and whether they can provide their own screenshots.
How to capture it
Use the platform’s built-in screenshot, clip, message-export, or report-attachment feature when available. Capture enough surrounding context to show the sender and timestamp, not only the most offensive line. Keep original files unedited, and make a backup in a private, secure location. If a message disappears, note that it existed and write down its exact wording as soon as you can remember it.
Do not bait the person into sending more abuse, publish their details, or circulate explicit material. For suspected child sexual exploitation, do not download or redistribute material unnecessarily; preserve the account and message details and follow instructions from the appropriate authority or reporting service.

Mute for immediate relief
Muting stops you from hearing or seeing a person’s messages while allowing you to finish a match or keep a team connection. It is useful when you need time to save evidence or when a block would reveal that you acted. It does not ask the service to investigate the conduct.

Block to end direct contact
Blocking generally prevents direct messages, voice contact, friend requests, invitations, or profile interaction from that account. The exact effect varies, and a person can sometimes create another account. If the behavior continues from new accounts, document the pattern and report each relevant account rather than engaging.
Review the controls that matter
- Disable text or voice chat entirely, or allow it only with approved friends.
- Limit direct messages, party invitations, guild or clan invitations, and friend requests.
- Hide your real name, location, school, age, phone number, email address, and linked social accounts.
- Restrict who can see your online status, game history, friends list, or current server.
- Turn on account security features such as a strong unique password and multifactor authentication when offered.
The Australian eSafety Commissioner notes that gaming controls differ by service but commonly include turning off chat, limiting communication to friends, muting, blocking, and reporting. Check the current settings for the game, console, PC launcher, and chat application separately; changing one may not change the others.
5. Report the specific behavior in every place it occurred
Start with the game or game account
Use the in-game report option while the relevant match, message, voice session, or profile is identifiable. Choose the closest category, such as harassment, threats, hate speech, sexual content, or sharing personal information. Include a concise factual description and attach the saved evidence if the form permits it.

A console network, PC launcher, or account service may have a separate safety process. Report there even if you already reported inside the game. If the conversation moved to a third-party chat service, report the message and account on that service too. A game operator may not be able to act on content it cannot see.

Why a specific message matters
Platforms often need the exact chat line, private message, voice clip, image, or experience identified. A profile-only report may show moderators that an account exists but not what happened. Roblox’s help guidance distinguishes violations that occur inside an experience from those that occur outside it and advises reporting the specific chat, private message, experience, or content. Its support instructions warn that a profile-only report may not give moderators enough context.
Keep the report factual: state what was said or done, when, where, and why it violates the service’s rules. Avoid insults, speculation about the person’s identity, or demands for a particular punishment. A report requests review; it does not guarantee suspension, removal, or any other outcome.
6. Handle a child’s account and family settings
Talk before changing everything
Explain which setting you are changing and why. Abruptly removing all online access can make a child less likely to disclose the next incident. Preserve the child’s relevant evidence, then agree on safer communication limits and who will receive future reports.
Check linked accounts
Review the game account, console account, PC launcher, and any connected chat or streaming account. A child may be safe in the game but still reachable through a public profile, friend list, or external messaging app. Ask whether the person requested a move to another platform. The FTC warns that moving a conversation away from the game can be an attempt to establish a personal connection. Keep gameplay discussion in the game and do not share identifying details, including small facts that could be combined to locate someone.

Use current parental controls
Parental-control screens and communication options change over time. Roblox, for example, allows parents to report or block a user from a child’s account through parental controls, but the available controls and interface may change. Open the platform’s current support documentation and verify the setting on the child’s account rather than relying on a remembered path.

When to contact authorities
Contact local law enforcement for an immediate or credible violence threat, stalking, a hate crime, or other conduct that may be criminal. If sexually explicit material or grooming involves a child, contact the relevant child-protection or law-enforcement service and follow its instructions for preserving evidence. Do not assume the platform’s moderation team is a substitute for an emergency response.
Use the right route for your location
Legal definitions, mandatory-reporting duties, emergency numbers, and online-safety regulators vary by country and region. StopBullying.gov provides U.S. federal guidance. The eSafety Commissioner provides separate Australian routes for serious cyberbullying and adult cyber abuse. Readers elsewhere should use their own government’s emergency, police, child-protection, or online-safety resources.
What to provide
Give authorities the incident log, original screenshots or clips, account identifiers, dates and times, links or message IDs, and the platform report number. State whether the person knows the player offline, has access to an address or school, or has made a specific threat. Keep copies of what you submit.
8. Common mistakes that make an incident harder to resolve
- Arguing or threatening revenge: this prolongs contact and can create confusing evidence.
- Deleting everything immediately: blocking is useful, but save relevant material first when safe.
- Reporting only a profile: identify the actual message, chat, content, or experience whenever possible.
- Forwarding abusive or explicit material: do not spread it; give it only to the appropriate reporting channel.
- Sharing more personal information to prove a point: never send an address, school, phone number, password, live location, or private photograph.
- Assuming one report covers every service: report separately in the game, platform, and external chat service.
- Expecting a guaranteed punishment: platforms review reports under their own rules and may not disclose the outcome.
- Relying on old instructions: interfaces and parental controls change, so verify the current help page.
9. A practical incident checklist
Use this checklist during or immediately after an incident:
- Leave the match or voice channel and stop replying.
- Tell a trusted adult if the player is a child or feels unsafe.
- Check whether the person asked for personal information or tried to move the conversation elsewhere.
- Write down the account name, date, time, game, channel, and a factual description.
- Save screenshots, clips, emails, or text messages that show the context.
- Mute or block the account.
- Adjust chat, direct-message, invitation, friend-request, and profile-visibility settings.
- Report the specific content in the game.
- Report it on the console, launcher, or external chat service where applicable.
- For threats, stalking, hate crimes, or sexual material involving a child, contact the appropriate local authority.
- Keep report numbers and copies of submitted evidence.

After you report
Keep the account blocked and avoid checking repeatedly for a response. Some services provide a case number or status page; save it with your incident log. If the person returns through another account, record the new identifier and report the pattern without replying. If the incident is affecting sleep, school, work, or willingness to play, ask a trusted adult or qualified support professional for help. Safety and recovery matter even when a platform does not remove the account.
The goal is not to prove that you can tolerate abuse. It is to end the contact, preserve enough information for a fair review, and involve the people or authorities who can help when the behavior crosses into serious danger.
