Choose the scope before changing anything
Steam offers two different ways to stop sharing game activity. A profile-level change applies to the game information covered by Steam’s privacy model across your account. A per-game change applies to one title and leaves the rest of your profile under its existing settings.

Use the broad setting when you do not want friends or other visitors to inspect your library-related information at all. Use the individual control when one game is sensitive but you still want friends to see other titles, achievements, or playtime. Steam also provides a separate control for total playtime, which is useful when you want game details to remain visible but do not want your accumulated hours displayed.
| What you want to hide | Control to use | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Your library-related game information | Profile > Edit Profile > Privacy Settings > Game Details: Private | Account-wide game details |
| Only your total hours | Separate total-playtime privacy option | Total playtime, while other game details may remain available |
| One sensitive game | Library game management or properties menu > Privacy > Private | That title only |
| Your live online or in-game presence | Friends & Chat presence controls, plus game privacy where appropriate | Current status rather than historical profile data |
How Steam’s profile privacy levels work
Steam documents three profile states: Public, Friends Only, and Private. These states determine who can view the profile information exposed by each category. Privacy changes save automatically, so there is no separate confirmation button to hunt for after selecting a value.

Public
A public profile makes the categories you have left public available to anyone who can view your profile. If Game Details is public, that category can include your purchased or wishlisted games, achievements, and playtime.
Friends Only
Friends Only limits the selected profile category to people on your Steam friends list. It is a visibility reduction, not the same as hiding the category completely. Someone who is already your friend can still see information that remains enabled for friends.
Private
Private removes the selected category from normal profile viewing. Setting Game Details to Private is the account-level choice for hiding the game information Steam groups under that category, including owned or wishlisted games, achievements, and playtime.

These profile levels are category controls. Changing the overall profile level does not necessarily answer a narrower question such as whether one title is hidden while the rest of your library remains visible. For that case, use the title’s own Privacy control.
Hide all game activity through Privacy Settings
The following procedure changes the visibility of Game Details for your profile.

- Open Steam and navigate to your Profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Find Game Details.
- Set Game Details to Private.
Steam saves the privacy change automatically. Game Details is the category Valve uses for information about games you own or have wishlisted, achievements, and playtime. Making this category private is therefore broader than hiding a single recent game: it changes the visibility of the game-related details associated with your profile.
This setting is the appropriate choice when your goal is “do not let people inspect my Steam game activity” rather than “hide one particular title.” It also avoids having to repeat a per-game action whenever you install or play another title.

What this account-wide setting does not specifically target
Game Details controls profile game information. It is not a blanket statement that your account is invisible, nor is it a replacement for reviewing your current Friends & Chat presence. Steam treats profile information and live presence as related but separate parts of the service. If your concern is that friends can see you online right now, continue to the Friends & Chat section below.
Hide only your total playtime
Steam documents a separate option that can keep total playtime private even when other game details remain viewable. This is useful when you are comfortable showing a library or achievements but do not want a cumulative hours figure attached to your profile.
- Open your Profile.
- Choose Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings.
- Locate the separate total-playtime privacy option.
- Enable the privacy choice that hides total playtime.
The exact presentation of this control can change with Steam’s current interface, so look for the option specifically referring to total playtime rather than changing Game Details unnecessarily. The result is narrower than making Game Details private: other game information may remain available according to its own setting.

Use this option when the number of hours is the sensitive part. If you also want to conceal ownership, wishlists, achievements, and the games listed on your profile, set Game Details to Private instead.
Hide one Steam game without making your whole profile private
Steam’s per-title privacy control is designed for this exact situation. Marking a game as private hides that game’s ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity. It also removes the title from the profile games list and the recently played section. Events from that title, including achievement unlocks or a “Played for the first time” event, are kept out of friends’ Activity feeds.
- Open your Library.
- Select the game you want to conceal.
- Open the game’s management or properties menu.
- Find the game-level Privacy control.
- Mark the game Private.
The setting applies to the selected title rather than your complete library. Friends should no longer see you as in-game for that private title, and the title should not appear in the profile locations Steam identifies for game lists, recent play, or activity events.
What is hidden for a private title
| Information connected to the title | Result when the game is marked Private |
|---|---|
| Ownership | Hidden |
| In-game status | Suppressed for that game |
| Playtime | Hidden for that game |
| Profile games list | The title is removed |
| Recently played section | The title is removed |
| Activity-feed events | Events such as achievements and first-played activity are suppressed |
Per-game privacy is reversible from the same game privacy control. You can change the title back when you no longer need it hidden; the control is not a permanent deletion of the game, its achievements, or your local installation.
Stop friends seeing that you are online or playing now
Historical game information and live presence are not identical. Steam states that friends can see when you are online and that playing a game shows you as in-game. If the problem is the live indicator rather than your profile history, review your status in Friends & Chat.

Marking a specific game Private explicitly suppresses that game’s in-game status. However, a private game setting should not be treated as a general replacement for every Friends & Chat presence choice. Decide whether you need to hide one title’s current status or whether you need to manage your broader online presence.
Match the control to the symptom
- Friends can see a title on your profile: check Game Details or mark that title Private.
- Friends can see hours for a game: use the per-game Private control, or hide total playtime if the concern is the aggregate number.
- Friends see you listed as in-game: review the game’s Privacy control and your Friends & Chat presence.
- Friends see an achievement or first-played event: mark the title Private so its activity-feed events are suppressed.
Global privacy versus one-game privacy
The controls overlap, but they solve different problems. Use the comparison below before changing a setting.
| Decision factor | Game Details: Private | Individual game: Private | Total-playtime option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | All game details covered by the profile category | One selected title | Total hours only |
| Owned or wishlisted games | Hidden under the Game Details category | Ownership of the selected title is hidden | Not necessarily hidden |
| Achievements | Hidden under Game Details | Activity from the selected title is suppressed | Not necessarily hidden |
| Playtime | Hidden under Game Details | Hidden for the selected title | Total playtime hidden; other details may remain visible |
| Recently played placement | Covered by the account-level game-details privacy model | Selected title is removed | Not necessarily removed |
| Live in-game status | Review separately in Friends & Chat | Suppressed for the private title | Not a live-presence control |
| Can it be changed back? | Yes, from Privacy Settings | Yes, from the game’s Privacy control | Yes, from the same privacy settings area |
The table’s “not necessarily” entries matter: a narrower setting should not be assumed to hide categories it does not name. Steam’s controls are intentionally separated so you can choose between broad profile privacy, title-specific privacy, and hours-only privacy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify that the change worked
Steam’s settings normally apply immediately, but checking from another viewpoint catches mistakes such as changing the wrong category or the wrong game.
- After saving the setting, open your profile while logged out, if possible.
- If logging out is inconvenient, view the profile from an alternate account that is not affected by your friends-only permissions.
- Check the profile games list and recently played area.
- Look for the title’s ownership, playtime, and in-game indicator.
- Review the Activity feed for events associated with the title.
- If the issue is a live indicator, have a friend check Friends & Chat while you are online.
For a global change, verify the overall Game Details category rather than checking only one game. For a per-game change, verify the selected title while confirming that another game remains visible if that was your intention.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Common mistakes and how to correct them
Changing the profile level instead of Game Details
Public, Friends Only, and Private are profile privacy states, but the category that governs game ownership, achievements, and playtime is Game Details. If you selected a general profile option and still see game information, return to Edit Profile > Privacy Settings and inspect Game Details directly.
Using total-playtime privacy when you need to hide a game
The total-playtime option targets the aggregate hours figure. It does not, by itself, promise to remove a particular title from your profile, hide its ownership, or suppress its activity-feed events. Use the game’s own Privacy control for a single-title request.
Expecting a private title to hide every account status
A private title suppresses that game’s in-game status, but Steam’s general online presence is handled through Friends & Chat. If friends still see that you are online, review the presence setting rather than repeatedly changing the title privacy control.
Checking only the library
Privacy changes affect several surfaces. Confirm the profile games list, recently played section, ownership, playtime, in-game status, and Activity feed when those are part of your concern. A title disappearing from one location is not a complete verification.
Changing your mind later
These settings are reversible. Return to Profile > Edit Profile > Privacy Settings to change the account-level Game Details or total-playtime choice. For a single title, open the game’s Library management or properties menu and change its Privacy value.
Before switching a setting back, consider which information you intend to expose: the title itself, hours, achievements, recent-play placement, activity-feed events, or live status. Reversing one control does not automatically change the others, so use the same scope-specific setting that created the privacy restriction.
A practical decision guide
- Hide everything related to your Steam games: set Game Details to Private.
- Hide only your cumulative hours: use the separate total-playtime privacy option.
- Hide one title while leaving other games visible: mark that title Private from its Library privacy control.
- Stop a private title appearing as the game you are playing: use the per-game Private control.
- Control whether friends see you online generally: review Friends & Chat presence separately.
- Confirm the result: check from a logged-out or alternate account and inspect every profile surface relevant to your concern.
Steam’s model is granular enough to conceal a single title without making the whole profile private, while still offering an account-wide switch when you want all game details hidden. Pick the narrowest control that covers the information you actually want to stop sharing.
