You can usually change how your character’s gear looks without changing its stats—but the controls depend on the MMO. First identify which game you’re playing, then choose whether you want to replace the appearance of individual gear pieces, wear a full-body outfit, or hide a slot such as a helmet. Costs, unlocks, and compatibility rules vary.
Choose the kind of appearance change you want
- Change a gear piece’s appearance: Apply a cosmetic skin or project another item’s look onto the gear you have equipped. Your equipped item remains the source of its stats.
- Wear a full-body outfit: Use an outfit or costume that overrides the visible look of multiple armor pieces.
- Hide one slot: Turn off the display of a particular item, often a helmet or hat. Not every game supports this for every type of gear.
These are different features, even when a game groups them under an appearance or wardrobe menu. The instructions below are specific to the games covered here; they are not universal MMO steps.
Guild Wars 2: Separate stat gear from skins and save Fashion Templates
Change individual gear skins
Guild Wars 2 separates the gear that determines your stats from the skins shown on your character. ArenaNet’s Wardrobe announcement describes the Wardrobe as a way to apply skins without losing the stats of your equipment. In the current interface, the Fashion tab’s Wardrobe section is where you manage those appearances.
According to the Guild Wars 2 Support guide, saving a changed skin normally costs one Transmutation Charge per changed item. Dye changes are free, and transmuting a slot with corresponding legendary gear does not require the charge.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Save or apply a Fashion Template
ArenaNet says Fashion Templates arrived in the February 3, 2026 patch. A template can save a cosmetic loadout of armor and weapon skins, backpack skins, and dyes. Applying an already saved Fashion Template to gear is free; changing skins and saving those changes is the step that may use Transmutation Charges.
You can set a template to apply automatically when your gear changes. That setting overwrites the cosmetics currently applied to the affected equipment, so check the template and the gear’s existing appearance before enabling it.

Use an outfit for a broader look
Guild Wars 2 also has outfits, which use an appearance slot to replace the visible look of equipped armor without transmuting each armor piece. This is distinct from saving individual gear skins in a Fashion Template; consult the current in-game controls for the outfit you want to wear.
Final Fantasy XIV: Project one item’s look onto another

Cast glamour
After unlocking it, use Cast Glamour from Actions & Traits, an item’s subcommands, or the glamour dresser in an inn room. This changes the displayed appearance rather than replacing the underlying equipped item.
Some glamours have race, gender, or Grand Company requirements. The Lodestone guide warns that an appearance will not display if you do not meet its relevant requirements.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Hide headwear, with separate controls for polymorphs
Hide an equipment or costume helmet or hat
Bethesda Support provides two routes for ordinary equipment or costume headwear: open Collections → Appearance → Hats and choose Hide Your Helm, or use an Outfit Station and go to Equipment → Armor Styles → Head.
Hide a polymorph helmet
Polymorph helmets use a separate Hide Polymorph Helmet setting, with navigation that varies by platform. Do not assume the ordinary hat toggle controls a polymorph’s helmet.

Know the disguise exception
Bethesda says a helmet or hat cannot be hidden on a disguise; unequip the disguise to hide the headwear. Its support article, “How do I hide my helmet or hat?”, covers the available controls and exceptions.
World of Warcraft: Treat the announced Outfit Slots as version-dependent
Blizzard’s announcement, “Dress for Every Situation with the Updated Transmog System,” published February 12, 2026 under the Midnight heading, describes saved appearances in Outfit Slots. In the announced system, new gear in a slot inherits the look saved for that slot, and updating an outfit to a specific style costs gold.
The announcement is not a reliable substitute for checking the live client: its current availability and exact in-game steps are not established here. Confirm that the feature is available in your version and region before relying on these Outfit Slot behaviors.
