Then look for an active costume or disguise, hidden cosmetic slots, an unapplied change, a different saved outfit, or an appearance your character cannot use. The exact menu names and fixes depend on the game and platform; the examples below show how these problems work in ESO, Guild Wars 2, and World of Warcraft.
Start by narrowing down where the outfit disappears
Compare the character-selection screen with your character after entering the game. If the appearance is wrong in only one place, that distinction can help separate a preview or display issue from an outfit that is not active in play.
- Wrong only on character selection: Check whether the in-game appearance is correct. In its February 2026 pre-expansion notes, Blizzard listed a fix for a specific WoW bug that prevented some characters on different realms from displaying their transmog outfit on the Character Select screen. That is a WoW example, not a general fix for every MMO. Blizzard’s February 2026 notes
- Wrong after entering the game: Focus on active costumes or disguises, cosmetic visibility settings, whether changes were applied, and which saved outfit or template is selected.
- Visible to you but not other players, or vice versa: Check the appearance from another character or ask another player what they see, if possible. This helps identify whether the issue is limited to your client or also affects how others see your character; not every game provides a setting or diagnostic for this.
Also note whether the problem affects one character or several, one gear slot or the whole outfit, and one saved appearance or all of them. These comparisons can help isolate the cause before you change anything.
Check for a costume, disguise, or appearance override
Equipped gear can remain in place while a separate cosmetic effect changes what you see. In The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), Bethesda identifies disguises, costumes, Style Parlor selections, and vampirism as possible reasons a character’s appearance may differ from expected. In ESO
If armor appears at login but disappears after you enter play, ESO support advises checking the Apparel accessory slots for an active disguise and removing it. If there is no disguise and the graphics still do not change, Bethesda directs players to submit an in-game ticket. ESO’s troubleshooting instructions

Make sure cosmetics are enabled and changes are applied
Some games let you hide cosmetics by slot or require a separate apply action. In Guild Wars 2, the Fashion Templates guidance says to use the checkbox on a cosmetic item’s thumbnail to enable or disable that slot, then click “Apply to equipment” for changes to appear in the game world. GW2 also says an equipped Outfit overrides other armor cosmetics in the active Fashion Template. If your armor skins seem to have no effect, check whether an Outfit is equipped. Applying a saved Fashion Template to a gear set does not require a transmutation charge, according to the guidance; changing skins while saving a template may cost charges. Costs and interface behavior can change, so check the current in-game UI rather than relying on an old price.

Confirm the intended saved outfit or template is active
A game may store several appearances and switch among them, so the outfit you edited may not be the one currently shown. In World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 announcement for the updated, Midnight-era transmog system describes applying appearances to Outfit Slots, saving multiple outfits, and associating outfits with situations such as changing specialization or entering a dungeon. Blizzard says, “You can also switch outfits automatically for different situations in the game.” Blizzard’s updated transmog announcement
In WoW, check which Outfit Slot is active and whether a situation rule is selecting a different outfit. Blizzard’s announcement says updating an outfit to a style costs gold, while switching between unlocked saved outfits is free; these details are specific to the announced system and may change with later updates.

Check whether this character can use the appearance
Having an appearance in a collection does not necessarily mean every character can apply it. Blizzard support explains that an appearance may be learned for characters who can equip that type of gear, while another character may not be eligible to use it. Blizzard’s transmog eligibility guidance
If only one character cannot use a collected appearance, check the game’s class, armor-type, or other appearance restrictions before treating it as a display bug. Eligibility rules differ among games, so use the relevant game’s own support information.

If the outfit is still wrong
- Recheck the character in the game world and on the selection screen, and note which view is incorrect.
- Inspect active costumes, disguises, outfits, and any appearance override that could cover the gear’s normal look.
- Check cosmetic visibility for each affected slot and use the game’s apply, save, or equip action if it has one.
- Verify the active saved outfit, template, or situation-based rule, then confirm the character is eligible to use the appearance.
- If the problem persists, consult the game’s official support channel. In ESO, Bethesda advises submitting an in-game ticket when armor graphics remain wrong after checking for a disguise. ESO support instructions
For a character-specific or screen-specific issue, include the character, affected slots, where the appearance is wrong, and the steps you have already tried when contacting support. A workaround reported by an individual player on a forum is not a guaranteed fix.
Why exact steps depend on the MMO
The controls above are documented examples for ESO, Guild Wars 2, and WoW, not universal menu paths. Other MMOs may use different appearance systems, and the available checks can vary by platform and game version. Use your game’s own appearance interface and support documentation rather than assuming that a WoW, GW2, or ESO label exists in another title.
