To hide your Steam game activity from friends, open your profile, choose Edit Profile, open Privacy Settings, and set Game Details to Private. Steam saves the change automatically. This account-level setting hides your owned games, wishlist, playtime, achievements, recently played titles, and in-game title/status from friends.
For narrower situations, use Invisible in Friends & Chat to appear offline while continuing to chat, or mark one title Private from its Manage menu. Steam’s separate Library Hide command only removes a game from your own library view; it is not a privacy setting.

Choose the control that matches what you want to hide
Steam has three different controls that are easy to confuse. The right choice depends on whether you want to hide your entire game profile, change only your presence, disconnect from Steam’s community services, or conceal one title.

Hide all Steam activity with Game Details set to Private
Game Details is the account-level privacy switch. Steam’s profile privacy controls offer Public, Friends Only, and Private states. Setting Game Details to Private is the broadest way to stop friends from browsing your game-related information without changing your presence status.

Step-by-step
- Open Steam and go to your profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Find Game Details.
- Choose Private.
The setting saves automatically; there is no separate Save button to confirm. Afterward, friends cannot use your profile to inspect the game details covered by this setting.
What Game Details includes
Valve describes Game Details as including the list of games you have purchased or wishlisted, along with achievements and playtime. The setting also controls whether friends see you as in-game and the title you are playing. With Game Details set to Private, your account no longer presents those details to friends through the normal profile and activity views.
- Your owned-game list is concealed.
- Your wishlist is concealed as part of Game Details.
- Playtime and achievements are concealed.
- Your recently played section no longer exposes the private game activity.
- Friends do not receive an in-game status or the title of the game you are playing through this profile setting.
This is different from merely changing your online indicator. You can remain online while your game information is private, or you can combine private Game Details with Invisible if you also want to appear offline.

What changes for friends
Friends may still be able to interact with you through whatever Steam features remain available to them, but they cannot rely on your shared game details for features that require that information. The privacy setting is designed to conceal the game data itself, not to remove your account from Steam or block every possible interaction.
Appear offline while keeping Steam chat
If your goal is simply to stop friends from seeing that you are online, use Invisible. Steam defines Invisible as an offline-looking status that still allows you to view your friends list, send and receive messages, and participate in the community.

How to turn on Invisible
- Open the Friends & Chat panel in Steam.
- Open the status menu that shows your current presence.
- Select Invisible.
Friends see you as offline, while you retain Steam chat and community functions. Invisible changes presence only; it does not mark games private, remove ownership information, or conceal playtime and achievements from a profile whose Game Details remain visible.
When Invisible is the better choice
- You want to read or answer messages without appearing available.
- You want to browse the community while avoiding an online indicator.
- You want a temporary presence change rather than a permanent profile-privacy change.
Use Game Details > Private as well if you do not want friends to infer what you are playing from game-status or activity information. Invisible alone is not a per-game privacy control.
Go fully offline and disconnect Steam community features
Offline is stronger than Invisible. Steam says this status signs you out of the Steam community. You appear offline, but the consequence is that communication and other online-dependent community features do not work.
How Offline differs from Invisible
| Behavior | Invisible | Offline |
|---|---|---|
| Friends see you as offline | Yes | Yes |
| View your friends list | Yes | No community connection |
| Send and receive Steam messages | Yes | No |
| Participate in Steam community features | Yes | No |
| Changes game ownership or playtime privacy | No | No |
Choose Offline when you deliberately want to sever the community connection. Choose Invisible when you need privacy from the online indicator but still want Steam’s communication tools.

- Open your Library.

- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark Private.
- Confirm the action if Steam presents a confirmation dialog.
The exact confirmation wording can vary by Steam client version, but the control remains under the game’s management options.

Other places Steam exposes the control
Steam also provides the same privacy control in the game’s Privacy properties, on the browser games list, and in the shopping cart before purchase. This means you can decide that a title should be private before it becomes part of your visible library history.
What Mark Private hides
- Ownership of that game.
- Your in-game status for that title.
- Playtime for that title.
- The title’s listing on your profile.
- Activity associated with that title.
- Achievement unlock activity and “Played for the first time” activity in friends’ feeds.
A private game also no longer appears in the Community profile games list or the recently played section. The setting applies to the selected title rather than changing the visibility of every other game.
The multiplayer exception you need to know
Mark Private does not make you invisible to a friend you actively invite into that game. Steam states that if you invite a friend to join a game marked private, that friend can see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect from Steam. This temporary visibility allows the invited player to join the session.
The exception is session-based: private ownership, playtime, profile listing, and activity remain concealed, but the invited multiplayer participant can see that you are in the game while the invitation relationship is active. If avoiding even that status is essential, do not invite the friend into the private title, or disconnect from Steam after leaving.

Private versus Hidden in the Library
Steam’s Library has a Hide command that is often mistaken for a privacy feature. Hide is an organizational tool for your own client. It removes a title from your normal Library list so you can keep the interface tidy.
Mark Private is the control that changes what friends can see. Hiding a game in the Library does not provide the ownership, status, playtime, profile, or activity protections described above. If your objective is privacy from friends, use Mark Private or the account-level Game Details setting instead.
Which setting should you use?
Use Game Details > Private when
- You want to conceal your complete owned-game and wishlist information.
- You do not want friends to see playtime, achievements, recently played titles, or in-game title/status.
- You prefer one account-wide setting rather than changing individual games.
Use Invisible when
- You only need to appear offline.
- You still want to read and send Steam messages.
- You still want to participate in Steam’s community.
Use Offline when
- You want Steam to sign you out of the community.
- You accept losing chat and online-dependent community features.
Use Mark Private when
- Only one title needs to be concealed.
- You want your other games to remain visible.
- You want to hide one game’s ownership, status, playtime, profile listing, and activity.
Combining controls for stronger privacy
The controls operate at different levels and can be combined. For example, setting Game Details to Private hides your game information while Invisible changes your visible presence. Mark Private can conceal a title even when your broader Game Details setting is not private.
Use combinations deliberately:
- Game Details Private + Online: friends cannot see the covered game details, but your presence can still show as online.
- Game Details Private + Invisible: game details are concealed and friends see you as offline while chat remains available.
- Mark Private + Invisible: one title is concealed and your presence appears offline, but you retain chat.
- Offline: this changes the community connection itself; it is not a substitute for marking a game private.
Because each control addresses a different type of visibility, changing only one may leave another signal unchanged. Check both the profile privacy setting and the Friends & Chat status when you need both game-data and presence privacy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshooting: when friends still see activity
You changed to Invisible but the game is still visible
Invisible affects presence, not game-data privacy. Open Edit Profile > Privacy Settings > Game Details and set Game Details to Private, or mark the individual title private.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You used Library Hide and expected friends to lose access
Hide only changes your own Library organization. Return to the game’s Manage menu and choose Mark Private.
A multiplayer friend can see you in a private game
This is the documented invitation exception. A friend invited to join a private multiplayer game can see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect from Steam.
Chat stopped working after changing status
You selected Offline rather than Invisible. Offline signs you out of Steam’s community, so messaging and other online-dependent community features stop working. Switch to Invisible when you need to appear offline but keep chat.
The privacy change does not seem to have saved
Steam says profile privacy changes save automatically. Reopen Edit Profile, check Privacy Settings, and verify that the intended Game Details state is still selected. For a single title, reopen its Manage or Privacy properties and verify that Mark Private is applied.
What friends can and cannot infer
Game Details Private and Mark Private suppress the specific Steam profile and activity surfaces covered by those controls. They are not a promise that nobody can ever know what you are doing through direct interaction. For example, an invited multiplayer participant receives the temporary in-game status needed to join a session.
Invisible similarly changes the status presented to other players while leaving your own ability to use chat and community features intact. Offline removes that community connection instead of merely masking it. Treat these as separate privacy decisions: game-data visibility, presence visibility, and community connectivity.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Decide whether you need account-wide privacy, one-game privacy, or only an offline-looking presence.
- For account-wide privacy, use Edit Profile > Privacy Settings > Game Details > Private.
- For one title, open its Manage menu and choose Mark Private.
- For offline appearance with chat, choose Friends & Chat > Invisible.
- For a complete community disconnect, choose Offline.
- Do not confuse Library Hide with privacy.
- Remember that an invited friend can see in-game status during a private multiplayer session.
