How to Hide, Unhide, or Remove Games from Your Steam Library

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Steam has three different controls that people often call “removing” a game: Hide takes a title out of your normal Library view, Private stops other users from seeing ownership and activity, and account deletion permanently removes every license and associated account record. Choose the first two for ordinary cleanup or privacy; account deletion is the only documented route that actually destroys licenses, and it affects your entire account.

Choose the result you actually want

Before changing anything, decide who should stop seeing the game and whether you still need the license. The controls operate at different scopes and are not interchangeable.

Action Who can see the game? Visible to you? License retained? Reversible? Scope
Hide You no longer see it in the ordinary Library view. It is not a social-privacy control. Yes, under View > Hidden Games. Yes. The game remains associated with your account. Yes; remove it from Hidden Games. One title in your Library.
Mark Private Other users cannot see ownership, in-game status, playtime, or activity for that title. Yes. It remains in your Library. Yes. Yes; change the privacy setting again. One title’s social visibility.
Delete the Steam account The account and its associated information are deleted. No, after deletion. No. All game licenses are deleted. Only during the 30-day cancellation period; afterward, no. The complete account, not one game.

Steam’s client labels can change slightly between updates, but the distinctions remain: Hide is organization, Private is social privacy, and account deletion is permanent account-wide removal.

How to hide a game from your own Library

Use Hide when you still own a game but do not want it mixed into the normal Library list. Steam describes this as an organizational feature. It does not revoke the license, refund the purchase, or remove the title from your account.

  1. Open the Steam client and select Library.
  2. Find the game you want to conceal. You can use the Library search field if the list is large.
  3. Right-click the game.
  4. Open Manage.
  5. Choose the command to Hide this game (the wording may vary slightly with the client version).

The title disappears from the ordinary Library view immediately. Your ownership remains intact, so you can still launch the game, install it, and access its normal account entitlements by opening the hidden-games list.

What hiding does not do

  • It does not delete the purchase or license.
  • It does not make the game private to friends or other Steam users.
  • It does not delete local files or alter cloud-save data.
  • It does not change your account’s purchase history.

If your goal is to keep a title away from another person’s view on your profile, use the Private setting instead. Hiding is primarily for your own Library organization.

How to mark a game private

Choose Private when you want to keep owning and seeing a game while limiting what other Steam users can learn about it. Steam says a private game hides its ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity from other users. Unlike Hide, the title remains visible to you in the Library.

  1. In the Steam client, open Library.
  2. Right-click the relevant game.
  3. Open Manage and select the private-game option, or open the game’s privacy controls where your client presents them.
  4. Confirm the change if Steam asks for confirmation.

The client must be online for the Private option. If you are offline and the command is missing or unavailable, reconnect to Steam and try again. The exact menu wording and location may change with Steam updates, so look for a control explicitly describing the game as Private, not merely hidden.

What other users stop seeing

  • That you own the game.
  • That you are currently playing it.
  • Your recorded playtime for it.
  • Related game activity shown through Steam’s social surfaces.

Private does not remove the title from your Library and does not erase the license. It is a visibility setting, not an ownership change.

Steam Support summarizes the distinction this way: “There’s already an option in your Steam Client Library to hide a game, which prevents it from appearing to you.” The sentence describes the owner-side Hide feature; it does not promise social privacy or license deletion.

How to unhide a game

A hidden title is recoverable from Steam’s dedicated hidden-games view. Use this procedure when a game seems to have vanished from your Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. At the top of the client, select View.
  3. Choose Hidden Games.
  4. Right-click the game you want to restore.
  5. Open Manage.
  6. Select Remove from Hidden.

The title returns to your ordinary Library view. Removing a game from Hidden does not alter its privacy status; if you also marked it Private, adjust that setting separately.

If the game is not in Hidden Games

  • Confirm that you are signed in to the Steam account that owns the title.
  • Open the Library filters and set them to show all games. A collection, category, platform, or other filter can hide a title without the game being in Steam’s Hidden Games list.
  • Search for the exact title in Library after clearing filters.
  • Check whether you are looking at a different Steam account or family library context.

These checks distinguish a genuinely hidden game from a filtering or account-selection problem.

Can you remove only one game from your Steam account?

Steam’s documented support material does not provide a normal, reversible command that permanently deletes one game’s license while leaving the rest of the account intact. Hiding changes the Library view, and Private changes social visibility; neither removes ownership.

That means a request such as “remove this one game from my account forever” has no equivalent to the Hide command. Do not treat uninstalling a game, removing it from a collection, or hiding it as license deletion. Those actions leave the account entitlement in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this matters for refunds and ownership

A hidden game can still be associated with the account and can be restored later. A private game can still be launched and remains in your Library. Neither action should be used when you are trying to cancel an ownership record. If you need help with a purchase-specific issue, use Steam’s purchase-support and refund processes rather than attempting to hide the title.

The permanent option: delete the Steam account

Account deletion is the documented route that removes game licenses, but it is not a per-game cleanup tool. Steam says deletion permanently removes the account’s game licenses, Community profile, gifts, inventory items, wallet funds, and other associated information. A deleted account cannot be restored after the deletion completes.

What happens during the deletion process

  1. Submit an account-deletion request through Steam’s account support flow.
  2. Provide proof of ownership when Steam requests it.
  3. Steam places the account in a 30-day deletion queue.
  4. During those 30 days, cancel the request if you change your mind.
  5. After the queue completes, the account and related information cannot be recovered.

The 30-day period is a cancellation window, not a temporary way to keep selected games. Deletion applies to the entire account and all of its licenses, not just the title you wanted out of the Library.

Before requesting deletion

  • Confirm that you do not need any remaining games, downloadable content, gifts, inventory items, wallet balance, or Community data.
  • Save any information you are legally or practically allowed to retain, because the account and associated data will not be recoverable after completion.
  • Make sure you are requesting deletion for the correct Steam account.
  • Use Hide or Private instead if your real objective is organization or social privacy.

Hide versus Private: common mistakes

“I hid it, so my friends cannot see it.”

Not necessarily. Hide removes the game from your normal Library view. It is not the setting Steam describes for hiding ownership, playtime, in-game status, and activity from other users. Mark the game Private when social visibility is the concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Private removed it from my Library.”

Private does the opposite: it keeps the game visible to you while restricting what other users can see about it. If the title is cluttering your Library, use Hide as well; the two controls address different problems.

“Hidden means I no longer own it.”

Hidden games remain licensed to the account. You can find them through View > Hidden Games and restore them with Manage > Remove from Hidden.

“Deleting one game is the same as deleting my account.”

Steam’s documented permanent deletion process is account-wide. It removes every game license and other associated account information, so it is an extreme step rather than a way to tidy one title.

A practical decision guide

  • You want a cleaner Library: Hide the game.
  • You want friends or other users not to see ownership or activity: Mark the game Private while online.
  • You hid it accidentally: Open View > Hidden Games, then Manage > Remove from Hidden.
  • You want to erase all Steam ownership and account data: Request account deletion only after reviewing the 30-day cancellation window and its permanent consequences.
  • You cannot find a title: Check the correct account, open Hidden Games, and clear Library filters before assuming the license is gone.

What to expect after each action

After you choose… Expected result What remains unchanged
Hide The game leaves the normal Library view. Ownership, account history, and the ability to restore and play the title.
Private Other users lose access to the title’s ownership and activity visibility described by Steam. Your Library access and license.
Remove from Hidden The game returns to the normal Library view. Any separate Private setting and the underlying license.
Account deletion The account enters a 30-day deletion queue, then is permanently deleted unless canceled. Nothing associated with the account is guaranteed to remain after completion; Steam lists licenses, profile, gifts, inventory, wallet funds, and other information for deletion.

For almost every “I do not want to see this game” or “I do not want others to see this game” situation, Hide or Private solves the problem without sacrificing ownership. Account deletion is appropriate only when you intend to leave Steam entirely and accept the loss of all account-wide entitlements and data.
