Choose managed hosting or self-hosting
Both approaches run the same BMC5 server files. The important difference is who operates the machine, networking and updates.

For a first server, managed hosting removes port-forwarding and operating-system work. Self-hosting is the better technical choice when you already have a suitable always-on machine and are comfortable restoring files after an update.
Get the correct BMC5 files and confirm the version
Use the Server Pack, not the client download
CurseForge publishes separate files for Better MC [NEOFORGE] BMC5. Select the file explicitly labelled Server Pack; a client ZIP is intended for a player’s launcher and is not a complete dedicated-server installation. A server pack normally contains the server-side mods, configuration and launch material needed to start the instance.

After downloading, check the archive name and its contents before you put it on a live machine. If the download is labelled only as a client profile or client pack, return to the project’s Files tab and choose the server-specific file instead. Do not assume that copying a player’s entire instance is equivalent: client-only mods can prevent a dedicated server from starting.
Re-check the live Files tab
The project page listed BMC5 ServerPack v53 as the latest file observed for Minecraft 1.21.1, with a main-file date of September 8, 2026. Search caches have also shown older labels such as v51, v48.5 and v46.5. Those cached labels are stale possibilities, not a reason to install an older release. Before every new installation or upgrade, open the live Files tab, verify the current version, confirm that it targets Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, and download the matching server pack.
Keep the exact pack version in your server notes. Everyone joining must install the same BMC5 release and compatible loader; “close enough” versions commonly produce missing-mod, mixin or registry errors.
Hardware, Java and network requirements
Memory
There is no official BMC5 memory requirement in the available documentation. Several hosting pages commonly recommend approximately 8 GB, while one self-hosting guide describes 6 GB as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended. Treat those figures as practical starting points rather than a guaranteed capacity specification. Allocate at least 6 GB only for a small, lightly loaded test; start a normal shared server at 8 GB and watch actual usage before adding players or heavy exploration.

Java
The BMC5 sources reviewed here do not confirm the required Java runtime. Minecraft 1.21.1 is generally associated with Java 21, but that is a general platform expectation, not a verified BMC5 instruction. Check the current pack description, included launch files or NeoForge documentation before choosing a runtime. An older file for a different Minecraft version carries a “Java 17 Required” label; that label does not establish the requirement for BMC5 1.21.1.
On the server machine, run java -version and record the result. If the pack’s documentation specifies another supported major version, install that version and ensure the server process uses it rather than an older Java executable on your PATH.

Network and port
Self-hosted Minecraft servers normally listen on TCP port 25565. Allow that port through the host firewall and, if the machine is behind a router, create a TCP port-forward from the router to the server’s fixed local IP address. The public address players use is your external address or DNS name; the local address in the forwarding rule is not shareable outside your network. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work and a managed host or tunnel service may be necessary.

- Create a server with enough memory for the pack; choose about 8 GB when the plan allows it.
- Open the panel’s modpack browser or installer.
- Search for Better MC [NEOFORGE] BMC5, then select the entry that identifies NeoForge and the desired Minecraft version.
- Click the panel’s Install or equivalent action and wait for the files to finish copying.
- Open the file manager or console and verify that the installed pack version matches the current CurseForge Files tab.
- Start the server once, accept the Minecraft EULA when prompted, then restart it.
- Set an administrator account from the console, configure a safe whitelist if the server is private, and share the address shown by the provider.
Do not rely solely on a catalogue name. Some panels retain an older build after a new pack release. Compare the installed server-pack version, Minecraft version and NeoForge loader with the files your players install.
Set up BMC5 on your own machine
1. Prepare a dedicated server directory
Create a new directory used only for this BMC5 instance. Keeping the world, logs, configuration and mods together makes backups and upgrades safer. Avoid extracting a new release over an existing world until you have a tested backup.

2. Download and extract the server pack
Download the current Server Pack from the BMC5 CurseForge Files tab, not the client profile. Extract it into the empty directory without changing filenames. If the archive includes a platform-specific launch script, use that script as the starting point; it may set loader-specific arguments that a hand-written command would omit.
3. Install and verify Java
Install the Java major version specified by the current pack documentation, then run java -version from the server directory. If the command reports an unsupported or unexpected version, correct that before troubleshooting mods. The Java 17 label found on an older, different-version file is not proof that this pack uses Java 17.

4. Perform the first launch
Run the included launch script if one is supplied. If you must start a server JAR manually, use the filename provided by the pack rather than guessing it. A typical pattern is java -Xms6G -Xmx8G -jar <server-jar> nogui; replace the variable with the actual JAR name and adjust memory only after checking the machine’s available RAM. Never allocate all physical memory: the operating system and file cache need headroom.
The first launch may stop while creating eula.txt. Open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, change the acceptance value only if you agree to it, and start the server again. Wait for the console to report that it is ready before attempting a connection.

5. Open the firewall and forward TCP 25565
- Assign the server computer a fixed local IP address, either with a router reservation or an operating-system network setting.
- Create an inbound firewall rule allowing TCP 25565 for the Java server process.
- Forward TCP 25565 on the router to that fixed local address.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when outside players still cannot connect.
6. Make the first connection
Install the matching BMC5 client pack and connect with the local address while testing at home. Once that works, use the public address from an external network. Keep the server console visible during the first connection so you can see authentication, registry or missing-mod errors immediately.

Match every client to the server
- Use the same BMC5 release on every client and on the server.
- Use the same Minecraft 1.21.1 target and NeoForge loader.
- Do not add or remove mods casually. A client-only visual mod may be harmless, but a content or registry mod must be compatible with the server.
- When an update is required, update the server and every player’s client as one change window.
Pre-generate the world
Exploration can cause heavy CPU and disk load because new chunks must be generated while players are moving. Use a compatible pre-generation tool such as Chunky to generate the intended play area before the opening session. Follow the tool’s in-game help for the commands supported by the installed version, then let generation finish while no one is playing. Pre-generation consumes storage and time, so choose a radius based on your actual community rather than generating an enormous world by default.

Set a conservative view distance
Start with view-distance=8 in server.properties. This reduces the number of chunks each player keeps active and is a sensible first response to tick lag. Change one setting at a time, restart if required, and measure the result rather than increasing distance because the machine appears idle during a quiet moment.
Profile instead of guessing
The spark profiler is referenced in third-party BMC5 performance guidance. Install a version compatible with the pack and use the command help shown by /spark to start and stop a profile. Capture a profile during the actual lag spike, note what players were doing, and use the report to distinguish chunk generation, a mod task, entity buildup or garbage collection. Profiling is more reliable than deleting random mods or repeatedly raising the memory limit.

Always troubleshoot from the earliest meaningful error. The final “server stopped” message is often only a consequence of the original Java, loader or mod failure.
Update BMC5 without losing the world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly from the console.
- Copy the complete world directory,
server.properties, whitelist and operator files, and the configuration directory to offline storage. - Record the current pack version, Java version and any custom settings.
- Download the new Server Pack from the live CurseForge Files tab and verify its Minecraft and NeoForge targets.
- Install the update in a separate directory first. Do not overwrite the only working installation.
- Copy only the documented persistent data and your reviewed configuration changes into the test instance.
- Start the test server, inspect the log, join with a matching client and walk through important areas.
- Schedule the production switch only after the test world loads and a backup is confirmed.
If the update fails, stop the test instance and return to the previous directory and backup. Never open a newly upgraded world with the old server files and assume the conversion can be reversed.
Operate the server safely
- Keep at least one backup that is not stored on the same disk as the live world.
- Back up before every modpack update and before major world edits.
- Use a whitelist for a private group and grant operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Do not expose remote administration ports to the public internet; use the host’s secure console or a protected management method.
- Watch disk space, memory use and log growth. A full disk can look like a mod or world failure.
- Document the server address, pack version, Java version, memory flags and custom settings so another administrator can recover it.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The practical 8 GB guidance comes from hosting pages and a third-party self-hosting guide, not from a published official BMC5 capacity test. No reliable player-capacity figure, hosting price comparison or official 2026 BMC5 server manual was identified. Capacity depends on view distance, world generation, mods, farms, storage speed, CPU performance and concurrent players. Treat the memory figure as a starting configuration, monitor the server under your real workload, and scale only after measuring.
The version information is also time-sensitive. v53 for Minecraft 1.21.1 was the latest listing observed on September 8, 2026, while older cached pages still displayed earlier builds. The live Files tab is the authority for the download you should use today.
