To host a BigChadGuys Plus (w/ Cobblemon!) server, download the release’s separate Server Files archive, run its supplied Fabric server with 64-bit Java 17, assign enough memory, and then make the server reachable on your LAN, through router port forwarding, or through a tunnel. Every player must install the identical BigChadGuys Plus release for Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Fabric loader.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The current release identified on the project listing is BCG+ 2.16.6, released October 14, 2026. The practical starting point is 4 GB of RAM; the project describes 6–8 GB as a comfortable range for several players, while the maintainer’s sizing rule adds about 1 GB for each player beyond the first two.

BigChadGuys Plus (w/ Cobblemon!) is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1. It combines Cobblemon with quests, built-in shaders, Terralith world generation, farming and cooking systems, vehicles, and an in-game economy. The pack is not a single executable server product: the server is a collection of Fabric libraries, mods, configuration files, launch files, and a Minecraft server JAR that must be started together.
The current project listing shows BCG+ 2.16.6 as the main release at the time of writing, with a matching “BCG+ 2.16.6 SF” server pack. Treat the release number as part of the server’s identity. A client on one BCG+ version and a server on another can fail during login, reject mod lists, or create world and configuration incompatibilities.

Cobblemon’s project page describes Cobblemon as a Pokémon mod for Java Edition and recommends Fabric Loader for the relevant Minecraft version. It also states that Cobblemon does not operate an official server; the world you create here is your own community server running the modpack.
Choose a hosting method before downloading anything
There are two workable approaches. Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and costs no hosting subscription, but your computer, network, and operating system must remain available whenever people want to play. Managed hosting places the process in a provider’s data center and supplies a control panel, backups, and support, in exchange for a recurring fee and less direct control.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted computer | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | No separate server subscription; you use an existing computer and internet connection. | Usually no special hardware purchase, but a recurring plan charge applies. Current prices vary by provider and region. |
| Setup complexity | Download, extract, install Java, run the script, configure the firewall and possibly the router. | Upload or install the server pack, select the appropriate Java/custom-JAR mode, and configure the panel. |
| File and mod control | Full access to every file, mod, configuration, and world. | Usually broad access through a panel or FTP, subject to the host’s restrictions. |
| Network access | You may need port forwarding, a public address, firewall rules, or a tunnel. | The provider normally supplies the public endpoint, so your home router is not involved. |
| Backups and recovery | You must create and test your own copies. | Many plans offer automated backups, but retention and restore controls differ. |
| CPU, storage, and latency | Depends on your computer, disk, upload bandwidth, and distance to players. | Depends on the assigned hardware and data-center location; compare CPU allocation, storage type, and player geography. |
| Support and maintenance | You diagnose Java, Fabric, router, operating-system, and mod errors. | Support can help with panel and process issues, but mod-specific problems may remain your responsibility. |
No controlled benchmark establishes a guaranteed tick rate, frame rate, uptime, or maximum player count for this pack. Select a plan or machine based on the number of simultaneous players, world-generation load, backup needs, and geographic latency rather than a promised player ceiling.
Download the correct BCG+ server archive
Find the release your group will use
Open the BigChadGuys Plus project’s Files page on CurseForge and select the exact release that your players will install. For the current release, that means BCG+ 2.16.6 and its matching server files. Do not let the launcher’s client download substitute for the server package.
Choose “Server Files,” not the normal pack ZIP
Under Additional Files, download the item labelled Server Files. The maintainer’s FAQ specifically distinguishes the archive named in the pattern “BCG+ [Version] Server Files.zip” from “BigChadGuys Plus [Version].zip,” which is the client download.
Extract the archive into a new, dedicated folder rather than mixing it with another Minecraft instance. A correct extraction should include:

Install Java 17 and prepare the machine
Use a 64-bit Java runtime
Install 64-bit Java 17 or newer. The BigChadGuys Plus FAQ says that Minecraft 1.20.1 requires Java 17 or newer and recommends Java 17 for this pack. A 64-bit runtime is important because the server cannot address a large memory allocation reliably through a 32-bit installation.
After installation, open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -version
Confirm that the command resolves to Java 17 (or a newer compatible release) and that the operating system is using the intended installation. If the launch script reports that Java is not found, correct the system PATH or edit the script so it points to the full path of the Java executable. Do not replace the supplied Fabric launch JAR with a vanilla server JAR.
Place the server folder on suitable storage
Use a local SSD when possible, especially if several players will explore new Terralith terrain. Keep the folder outside cloud-sync directories that may lock or partially upload world files while the server is running. Give the account that runs the server permission to read and write the entire folder, including config, mods, libraries, and the world directory created on first launch.
Set the memory allocation
The project FAQ recommends a minimum of 4 GB of RAM for a dedicated server and adds about 1 GB for every player after the first two. Its examples are 4 GB for two players, 6 GB for four players, and 8 GB for six players. The project listing describes 6–8 GB as a comfortable dedicated-server range for several players.

| Simultaneous players | Starting allocation from the FAQ rule | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 2 | 4 GB | The stated minimum for a small group. |
| 4 | 6 GB | Adds 1 GB for each player beyond the first two. |
| 6 | 8 GB | Within the project’s comfortable range for several players. |
Set the value in the supplied launch script. The exact variable names can differ between releases, so edit the existing memory arguments rather than replacing the whole command. Leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning every available gigabyte to Java can make the host unstable. If the machine has less than the required allocation available, reduce background applications or move the server to a larger machine instead of forcing a larger heap.
Start the server and accept the EULA
Windows
- Open the extracted server folder.
- Double-click
start.bat, or run it from a Command Prompt opened in that folder. - Watch the console for the first-run message. The process may stop and create
eula.txt. - Close the server window, open
eula.txt, read the terms, and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you accept them. - Run
start.batagain and wait for the console to report that the server has finished starting.
macOS or Linux
- Open Terminal and change into the extracted folder.
- Make the supplied script executable if the operating system requires it:
chmod +x start.sh. - Run
./start.sh. - If the first run stops for the EULA, close the process, edit
eula.txt, and seteula=trueonly after reading and accepting the terms. - Run
./start.shagain and keep the terminal session or a service manager running while the server is online.
Do not terminate the process by closing the window while players are connected. Use the server console’s normal stop command so the world can save cleanly before maintenance or a shutdown.

Test from the same computer first, then from another device on the same Wi-Fi or wired LAN. Local players can connect without internet port forwarding by using the host computer’s local network address and the game port shown in the server configuration. This isolates Fabric, mod, and world problems from router problems.
Every player should install the same BCG+ release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Fabric Loader that the server uses. They need the client pack, not the Server Files archive. A mismatch in release or loader is a common cause of a failed login even when the server itself starts normally.
Make the server reachable by remote friends
Router port forwarding
- Give the host computer a stable local address, either through a reserved DHCP lease in the router or a manual local configuration.
- In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule for the game port configured in the server’s
server.properties. Point it to the host computer’s local address and use the protocol required by the Java server. - Allow the Java runtime or the configured game port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Have a friend test from outside your home network. Testing only from inside the same Wi-Fi can produce a misleading result on routers without hairpin support.
- Give remote players your current public address and configured port through a private channel. Never publish your home address openly.
Router menus vary by manufacturer, and the server’s configured port is authoritative. If a friend cannot connect, verify the forwarding rule, the host firewall, the public address, and that the server process is still running.
When port forwarding is impossible
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when router settings look correct. If you cannot obtain a public address or cannot change the router, use a tunnel. The BigChadGuys Plus FAQ names ngrok and Cloudflare Zero Trust as alternatives; that FAQ describes ngrok’s free allowance as up to 1 GB of bandwidth, a limit that can change, so check the current terms before relying on it.

A tunnel adds another service between players and the server. Follow the tunnel provider’s current setup for the operating system, keep its client authenticated, and give players the tunnel address rather than your home address. Expect latency and bandwidth limits to depend on the tunnel’s region and plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use managed hosting when you do not want to run networking and uptime yourself
A managed host removes the need to leave a home computer on and usually avoids local port forwarding. It does not remove the need for the correct BCG+ server archive, Java compatibility, and modpack version control.
Upload the extracted files
- Create the server instance with enough memory for your intended group. Several providers advertise 6–8 GB as a typical range for heavier modpacks, but treat that as a starting recommendation rather than a performance guarantee.
- Upload the extracted server folders and JAR files through the provider’s FTP uploader or an FTP client such as FileZilla or Cyberduck.
- Preserve the directory structure. The
mods, config, libraries, and launch files must be in the location expected by the panel. - Use the panel’s custom Java 17 or custom JAR mode. The maintainer FAQ gives one provider-specific example in which
fabric-server-launch.jaris renamed tocustomjava17.jar; other panels use different names and fields, so follow the host’s current instructions. - Start the instance, complete the EULA step if it appears, and review the console for missing libraries or a failed custom-JAR path.
When comparing providers, check the CPU allocation (not just advertised RAM), storage, backup retention and restore process, data-center locations, support hours, cancellation terms, and whether custom Fabric packs are allowed. A host’s installation button can save time, but keeping a copy of the exact server archive and your world backups gives you an exit path.
Keep client and server files synchronized
Record the exact BCG+ release and Minecraft/Fabric versions in a small text file shared with your group. When updating, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, and update both the server archive and every player’s client to the same release. Do not overwrite a working world with a new pack until you have a restorable backup.
Modpack updates can change configuration defaults, world-generation behavior, or required libraries. Read the release notes on the project’s Files page, test the updated copy with one player, and keep the previous server folder until the new version has been proven safe. Never delete the only copy of a world while troubleshooting an update.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server stops and says the EULA is not accepted
Stop the process, open eula.txt, read the terms, set eula=true only if you accept them, save the file, and start the supplied script again. Editing a different folder’s EULA will not affect the server you are launching.

Fabric launch JARs or libraries are missing
Check the extraction first. A folder with only configuration data and overrides.json, or one lacking fabric-server-launch.jar and libraries, indicates that the normal client ZIP was used. Download the release’s separately labelled Server Files archive and extract it into a clean folder.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Confirm the server release, each player’s client release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Fabric Loader all match. Do not give clients the server archive as a substitute for the client pack. Compare the console’s reported mod list with the client’s installation when the versions appear identical but login still fails.
The process starts but becomes unusable when people explore
Check the Java heap setting against the sizing table, close unrelated applications, and make sure the server is on fast local storage. Watch for operating-system memory pressure and disk saturation rather than assuming that adding unlimited heap will solve every delay. If the machine cannot keep up with the group’s exploration and generation workload, move the same server folder to a stronger computer or a managed instance with better CPU allocation.
Remote friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server is running and listening on the port specified in
server.properties. - Recheck the router’s destination local address and the operating system firewall rule.
- Verify that the public address has not changed.
- Ask the internet provider whether carrier-grade NAT blocks inbound connections.
- Use a tunnel such as ngrok or Cloudflare Zero Trust when forwarding cannot work.
The server will not start after an update
Restore the last known-good server folder and world backup, then compare the new release’s files and Java output with the old installation. Keep the exact release number in the folder name so you do not accidentally launch a partially updated mixture of mods and libraries.
A launch checklist for the first play session
- All players have the same BigChadGuys Plus release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Fabric Loader.
- The host downloaded the separately labelled Server Files archive.
- The extraction contains
config,mods,libraries,resourcepacks,fabric-server-launch.jar,server.jar, and the supplied start script. - 64-bit Java 17 or newer is installed and is the runtime used by the script.
- The heap allocation is at least 4 GB and reflects the number of simultaneous players.
- The EULA was read and accepted in the correct server folder.
- A local connection succeeded before remote access was attempted.
- For internet play, the firewall, router rule or tunnel, and public endpoint were tested by someone outside the host network.
- A backup of the world and configuration exists before the group begins substantial exploration.
Bottom line
The reliable path is straightforward: match BCG+ 2.16.6 (or the exact release your group selected) across client and server, use the dedicated Server Files archive, run it with 64-bit Java 17, allocate at least 4 GB with additional memory as the group grows, and test locally before configuring remote access. Self-hosting is best when you want complete file control and can manage networking; managed hosting is worth the recurring cost when you need an always-on process, simpler public access, and provider-operated backups.
