To host a FiveM server on a VPS, rent a supported Windows or Linux virtual machine, install the current FXServer artifact, complete the bundled txAdmin first-run setup, register a Cfx.re server key, open the correct firewall ports, and run the process under a persistent service. The standard ports are TCP 40120 for txAdmin and TCP plus UDP 30120 for player connections in the cited Linux setup. A production installation also needs a non-root account, backups, restricted panel access and a process supervisor so the server continues after you close SSH.
What a VPS FiveM server actually consists of
A VPS gives you an operating system, virtual CPU and memory, storage, a public network address and administrative access. You install and maintain the FiveM server yourself. FXServer is the executable platform server; txAdmin is the web-based management panel already bundled with FXServer, not a separate resource that you download.

Players connect to the game endpoint, while administrators use txAdmin on a different port. Keeping those roles separate makes firewall rules and troubleshooting much clearer. Your VPS provider may also place a network firewall in front of the virtual machine, so a port must be allowed both at the provider layer and inside Windows Firewall or Linux firewall software.

Prerequisites before you create the VPS
Supported operating system and access
Use a supported Windows or Linux VPS with terminal access, remote desktop access or a startup console. You need permission to install software, create firewall rules and run a long-lived service. If the provider offers snapshots, schedule them only as an additional recovery layer; they are not a substitute for application-aware backups of your txData and resources.
Cfx.re account and registration key
The normal txAdmin flow requires a free Cfx.re account and a server registration key created in the Cfx Portal. The key is written to the server configuration as sv_licenseKey. Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into public screenshots, commit it to a public repository or give it to an untrusted administrator.
Database details for some recipes
The basic CFX default recipe is the simplest baseline and does not force you into an elaborate framework. Other recipes can require a database. Have the database host, port, database name, username and password ready before deployment. If a recipe fails because its database is missing, changing firewall rules will not fix it; select a recipe whose requirements you can satisfy or provide the required connection details.

A deployment plan
- Decide where the FXServer files,
txData, resources and backups will live. - Create a dedicated server account rather than running the process as root or a Windows administrator.
- Reserve a management path for txAdmin and decide whether it will be reachable only from your office IP, a VPN or another private route.
- Record the VPS public address and provider-firewall controls before enabling a host firewall.
Step 1: Provision and harden the VPS
Linux preparation
After connecting through the provider console or SSH, update the operating system before installing the server. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-style system, the usual sequence is:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgradeInstall the extraction and process-management tools appropriate to your distribution. Create a dedicated account, for example:
sudo adduser fivem
sudo usermod -aG sudo fivemUse the smallest privilege that permits administration. The FXServer process itself should run as fivem, not as root. If your security policy does not require the account to have sudo, omit that group membership and perform maintenance through a separate administrator account.
Windows preparation
Apply pending Windows updates, create a dedicated local service account where practical, and enable Remote Desktop or the provider’s console only for administration. Do not expose Remote Desktop and txAdmin broadly just because the VPS has a public address. Restrict management sources with provider rules and Windows Firewall.

Before enabling UFW or replacing existing firewall rules, allow SSH on the port you actually use. Otherwise, a correct FiveM installation can still lock you out. Add the txAdmin management rule only for the administration network you intend to use, then add the game endpoint rules. Repeat equivalent rules in the VPS provider’s firewall or security-group interface.

Step 2: Download and launch FXServer
Get the current recommended artifact
Download the current recommended FXServer artifact from the official Cfx.re server-download page. Extract it to a writable directory owned by the dedicated account, such as /opt/fivem on Linux. Keep the artifact separate from txData; updating binaries should not overwrite your deployed configuration and resources.
On Linux, an extracted archive is commonly unpacked with a command such as:
sudo mkdir -p /opt/fivem
sudo tar -xf /path/to/fxserver-artifact.tar.xz -C /opt/fivem
sudo chown -R fivem:fivem /opt/fivemThe exact archive filename and directory layout vary by artifact, so use the path created by the download rather than copying an old filename from a guide.
Start the first boot correctly
Change to the artifact directory and start without an +exec server.cfg argument:
cd /opt/fivem
./run.shOn Windows, run FXServer.exe directly from the extracted directory. FXServer starts the bundled txAdmin first-run panel when it is launched without an exec argument. The console prints a URL and a one-time PIN. Save neither in a public channel; the PIN is an initial credential.
After initial setup, launching with an explicit configuration is appropriate, for example +exec server.cfg, but do not use that form for the first-boot panel unless you already completed txAdmin and know which profile is active.
Step 3: Complete txAdmin first boot
- Read the URL printed in the FXServer console. From your own computer, replace a loopback address with the VPS public address when necessary; your browser’s
localhostrefers to your computer, not the VPS. - Open the panel and enter the one-time PIN printed by FXServer.
- Link the owner account to your Cfx.re account.
- Set the txAdmin backup password and accept the applicable platform and txAdmin terms.
- Choose a server name, select a FiveM recipe and set the data directory. The basic CFX default recipe is the least complicated baseline for a new installation.
- Open the recipe deployer and review its database requirements before running it.
The default txAdmin panel port is TCP 40120. If the page does not load, confirm that the process is running, that you used the URL printed by the console, and that TCP 40120 is allowed at both firewall layers. Do not publish the panel on an unrestricted public interface merely to make first boot convenient.
Step 4: Create the server registration key and deploy
Create and protect the key
In the Cfx Portal, create a server key for the Cfx.re account that owns the server. Copy the value into the txAdmin deployer when prompted. The key ultimately appears in the loaded configuration as sv_licenseKey. Keep the key and the txAdmin PIN private, and rotate access if an administrator who knew them leaves the project.

Run the recipe
Start the recipe deployment only after selecting the intended data directory and confirming any database settings. When deployment finishes, save the configuration and choose the option to run the server. txAdmin should show the live console and resource startup messages. A successful panel deployment does not prove that players can connect; network rules and the active profile still need checking.
Manual configuration
If you are not using a recipe, edit the server.cfg loaded by the active txAdmin profile. Confirm that it contains a valid sv_licenseKey, the endpoint settings and the resources you intend to start. Keep a copy of the working file before making large changes so you can identify whether a resource or configuration edit caused a failure.
Step 5: Open the right network ports
Game traffic
The cited Linux VPS guidance uses 30120/TCP and 30120/UDP for the standard FiveM game endpoint. Allow both protocols through the host firewall and the provider firewall. Opening only TCP can produce a server that appears partly reachable but has unreliable discovery or connection behavior.

Allow TCP 40120 only from the management path you selected. If your provider supports source-IP restrictions, permit your fixed office or home address, a VPN subnet or another controlled administrator network. If you must expose the panel temporarily for setup, narrow the rule immediately afterward.
Example UFW sequence
On Linux, adapt the following to your SSH port and security policy. The important ordering is to preserve administration access before enabling the firewall:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
sudo ufw allow 30120/tcp
sudo ufw allow 30120/udp
sudo ufw allow from YOUR_ADMIN_IP to any port 40120 proto tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verboseReplace YOUR_ADMIN_IP with the address or private network that should reach txAdmin. Do not copy a literal placeholder into production. On Windows, create equivalent inbound rules in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and then mirror them in the provider control panel.
Confirm the active address and profile
Check the public VPS address shown by the provider and the endpoint reported in the FXServer console. A common mistake is testing the private address, an old VPS address or a different server.cfg than the one txAdmin is running. If you moved the VPS, update DNS or bookmarks and re-check provider firewall rules.
Step 6: Keep the server running after SSH closes
Why an interactive shell is not enough
Starting ./run.sh in a normal SSH session ties the process to that session. Logging out, losing connectivity or closing the terminal can stop the server. A detachable shell is acceptable while installing resources; production needs supervision and automatic restart behavior.

tmux for setup and short-term operation
For a quick detachable session, install tmux and run:
tmux new -s fivem
cd /opt/fivem
./run.shDetach with the tmux detach key sequence, then reconnect later with tmux attach -t fivem. This preserves a console across an SSH logout but does not provide the same boot-time startup, health policy or log integration as a service manager.
systemd for a Linux production service
A systemd unit gives you boot-time startup, a dedicated user and restart policy. Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/fivem.service and adapt paths to your installation:

journalctl -u fivem -fUse the actual configuration path produced by your txAdmin profile. If the service starts the wrong profile, stop it, correct ExecStart and inspect the journal before changing resources. Keep txAdmin’s own management behavior in mind when deciding whether to let systemd or the panel control restarts; avoid two supervisors repeatedly fighting over the same process.
Windows service strategy
On Windows, use a supported service wrapper or a scheduled task configured to run at startup under the dedicated account. Set the working directory to the FXServer folder, capture standard output and configure restart-on-failure. Test a reboot and a deliberate process stop before calling the deployment production-ready.
Step 7: Organize txData, resources and backups
Separate mutable data from binaries
Keep the downloaded FXServer artifact in its own directory and store txData, server profiles and resources on backed-up storage. This lets you update the artifact without deleting administrator data. Do not assume that a provider snapshot captures every recent resource change or database transaction.
Back up what you would need to rebuild
- The active
server.cfgand any included configuration files. - The
txDatadirectory, including txAdmin profiles and administrator data. - Custom resources and version information for each resource.
- Database dumps when the selected framework uses a database.
- A record of firewall rules, environment variables and the artifact version.
Store at least one backup outside the VPS. Test restoring to a temporary directory or replacement VPS; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Watch the live txAdmin console after updates and resource changes. Look for repeated resource crashes, authentication failures, database timeouts and memory exhaustion. Configure log retention so a busy server does not fill the disk. Alerting is especially useful when the process is still running but a critical resource has failed.

Advanced configuration and multiple servers
For advanced provider or multi-server deployments, the txAdmin environment reference identifies TXHOST_* variables as the current configuration mechanism and notes that several older ConVars are deprecated. Configuration behavior is version-sensitive; the reference snapshot is dated 11 October 2026, so re-check it after txAdmin upgrades rather than copying an older ConVar-based guide.
Use separate txData directories for separate servers. Sharing one directory can mix administrator data, profiles and state between instances. Each instance also needs a distinct game endpoint and, where applicable, a distinct txAdmin management port or controlled access path. Document which service owns each directory before automating updates.
Security practices for a public server
- Run FXServer as a dedicated non-root or non-administrator account.
- Use SSH keys or another strong administrator authentication method and disable unused remote-access methods.
- Restrict TCP 40120 to trusted administrators; do not treat txAdmin as a player-facing page.
- Keep the registration key, txAdmin PIN, backup password and database credentials out of public chat and repositories.
- Patch the operating system and update FXServer artifacts deliberately, with a rollback copy of
txData. - Review every resource before installing it. A resource runs with server privileges and can expose data or destabilize the process.
- Back up before recipe redeployment, framework migration or major resource replacement.
Do not confuse a public game endpoint with a public management endpoint. Players need the former; only operators need the latter.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The txAdmin panel does not load
- Confirm FXServer was started without
+exec server.cfgduring first boot. - Use the exact URL printed in the server console and replace a VPS-local loopback address with the VPS address when connecting remotely.
- Check that TCP 40120 is listening and allowed by both the provider firewall and host firewall.
- Verify that another service is not already using the chosen panel port.
- If you changed the port, use the current configured value rather than assuming 40120.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm FXServer is running and the intended txAdmin profile is active.
- Verify that the Cfx.re registration key is valid and that
sv_licenseKeyis in the loaded configuration. - Allow 30120/TCP and 30120/UDP at both firewall layers.
- Check the public address and endpoint shown by the provider and server console.
- Inspect the console for a resource crash, database failure or configuration parse error.
The server stops when you log out
Move the process from an interactive shell to systemd, a Windows startup service or another supervisor. Run it under the dedicated server account and test a logout, reboot and intentional process termination. tmux prevents an SSH disconnect from killing the session, but it is not a full replacement for supervised startup and recovery.
The recipe deployment fails
Read the recipe’s database requirements and verify every connection detail. Preserve an existing txData backup before redeploying. If the new recipe targets the wrong directory, stop before it overwrites a working profile; create a separate test directory and deploy there first.
The server works locally but not publicly
This nearly always indicates address or firewall scope. Test from a network outside the VPS, verify the provider’s public IPv4 or IPv6 assignment, and compare the host rules with the provider rules. A browser test of txAdmin does not prove that UDP 30120 is reachable, so check both game protocols independently.
Self-managed VPS or managed FiveM hosting?
A VPS is a control choice, not automatically a cheaper or faster choice. With self-management, you control the operating system, FXServer artifact, resources, firewall and backup schedule, but you also own every update, incident and recovery task. Managed game hosting can provide the artifact, opened ports and a txAdmin link, reducing setup work while limiting some operating-system and resource control.

Choose a VPS when you are comfortable maintaining Linux or Windows and need direct control. Choose managed hosting when reducing administrative work is worth the provider’s limits and recurring cost. In either case, retain your own exportable backups so a move does not depend on one dashboard.

Production launch checklist
- Supported Windows or Linux VPS is updated and reachable through the intended management method.
- FXServer artifact is extracted in a writable directory separate from
txData. - Dedicated non-root or non-administrator service account owns the files and process.
- First boot was completed through the URL and one-time PIN printed by FXServer.
- Cfx.re account is linked and a valid server registration key is stored as
sv_licenseKey. - Recipe database requirements are satisfied, or the manual configuration has been tested.
- TCP 30120 and UDP 30120 are allowed at the provider and host firewalls.
- TCP 40120 is restricted to the administration path and is not unnecessarily public.
- systemd, a Windows service or another supervisor starts the server after reboot and restarts failures.
txData, resources, configuration and databases are backed up off the VPS.- A restore test, reboot test and external player connection test have all succeeded.
What the official setup guidance establishes
The official documentation describes FXServer as the Cfx platform server that can run on Windows, Linux, txAdmin or a game-server provider, and instructs operators who have not done so to register a free license key in the Cfx Portal. txAdmin documentation states that txAdmin is already included with FXServer and warns operators to keep the initial setup PIN private and allow panel access only through the intended firewall or private path.
The cited Linux VPS guide was marked updated 22 September 2026. The txAdmin environment reference snapshot was dated 11 October 2026. Because ports, environment variables and deprecated settings can change between artifacts, check the documentation that matches the FXServer and txAdmin versions you actually deploy.
