Forever Stranded is built around a crash landing on a hot, dry planet. Progress comes through quests, heat management, water and food survival, and a hardcore map. The official CurseForge project lists V-2.0.9 as the latest release (March 30, 2024) and provides a separate server download with that same version number. Its project page reports a changing total-download counter of 2.9M, not a permanent popularity statistic.

What you need before creating the server
Gather these items before you start. Preparing them first prevents most failed launches and incompatible client connections.
- A host computer or managed server that can remain online while friends play.
- The official Forever Stranded Server Pack V-2.0.9, downloaded alongside the matching client release.
- A clean, dedicated directory for the server files. Do not place the pack inside an unrelated modded-server folder.
- A compatible 64-bit Java 8 runtime, unless the supplied launch script specifies another compatible executable. Forever Stranded targets Minecraft 1.10.2 and an older Forge generation, so a modern Java installation should not be assumed to work.
- Sufficient memory for the pack, with free RAM reserved for the operating system and other services.
- The matching Minecraft 1.10.2 client, Forge installation, and Forever Stranded client files for every player.
- Permission to open a firewall rule and, when hosting from home, configure the router or other network gateway.
Keep the server and client release numbers identical. A player running a different Forever Stranded build can be rejected even when both installations say Minecraft 1.10.2.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
The right method depends on whether you prefer control or convenience. Self-hosting has the lowest recurring cost but makes you responsible for Java, storage, backups, firewall rules, network reachability, and keeping the machine powered on. A managed host supplies a control panel and a datacenter region, but charges monthly and may restrict the modpacks or server-pack versions it supports.

Compare a service on more than advertised player counts. Check the allocated RAM and CPU, the region closest to your players, backup access, support for the exact server-pack release, uptime expectations, and how much network administration you want to perform yourself.

Match the client and server release
Open the official Forever Stranded files page on CurseForge. Select the client release and the separately listed Forever Stranded Server Pack V-2.0.9. Do not combine a V-2.0.9 server with an older client, or use a server archive whose version number differs from the client pack you distributed to players. The project identifies V-2.0.9, released March 30, 2024, as its latest release.
Extract into a clean directory
Create a directory used only by this server, then extract the complete server archive into it. Preserve the folders and files supplied by the pack, including Forge libraries, mods, configuration files, world or template files, and launch scripts. Moving only the visible mods folder or copying files into an existing Forge installation can omit libraries and pack-specific settings that the launch script expects.
Use a path you can back up easily and avoid changing filenames until the first successful boot. If your operating system asks whether to merge folders, extract the archive into the empty directory instead of merging it with another modpack.

Install and start a self-hosted server
- Verify Java. Install or locate a 64-bit Java 8 runtime. Note the full path to its executable if more than one Java version is installed. The FTB server guidance states that its installer can download the appropriate Java version and that memory needs vary by modpack; for this older 1.10.2 pack, follow the included script and use compatible 64-bit Java 8 when required.
- Run the supplied setup or launch script. Start the script from the extracted server directory so relative paths to libraries, mods, configs, and templates resolve correctly. If the script offers a Forge installation step, allow it to finish before trying to launch the world.
- Read the first boot log. The initial run may create additional files and stop at the EULA prompt. Record the first Java, library, or Forge error rather than the last lines of a cascading failure.
- Accept the EULA. Open the generated EULA file, read the Minecraft license, and change the acceptance setting as instructed by the file. Save it, then start the supplied script again. The server will not continue until this requirement is satisfied.
- Set a practical heap. Edit the memory values in the launch script, using the syntax already provided there. Allocate enough heap for the modpack and expected players, but leave RAM for the operating system, Java overhead, backups, and any other process on the host. Increase the allocation gradually if logs show memory pressure; assigning all physical RAM can make the machine unstable.
- Wait for a ready state. A successful startup reaches the server’s normal ready message and keeps the process running without a repeating crash loop. Stop it through the console command or the script’s documented method before moving or editing files.
Keep the server directory orderly
Run one pack per directory. This prevents a second modpack’s libraries or configuration files from being loaded accidentally. Make a copy of the world directory before changing mods, configs, or the pack version. Store backups outside the live directory so a failed update cannot overwrite both the working world and its backup.
Configure memory, Java, and the first launch
Forever Stranded does not have one universal RAM number in the supplied documentation; the required heap depends on the modpack workload and the number of players. Start with the launch script’s existing memory settings, observe the log and operating-system memory use, and adjust in small steps. Leave a safety margin rather than assigning every available gigabyte.
When a script appears to launch with the wrong Java, print or inspect the executable path used by that script. A machine can have Java 8 and a newer Java installed simultaneously, and the server may be calling the newer one by default. Point the script explicitly at the intended 64-bit Java 8 executable when the script supports that setting. Errors mentioning unsupported class versions, Forge startup, or missing libraries are reasons to verify the executable before changing mods.
On the first successful boot, let the server create its normal world and configuration files. Stop it cleanly, inspect the generated files, and only then apply routine settings or copy in a prepared world. This makes it clear whether a later change caused a problem.
Make the server reachable by friends
Players on the same local network
Give local players the host computer’s local address and the server port shown by the server configuration. Allow the Java process through the host firewall when the operating system asks. A local connection test separates server startup problems from internet routing problems.

Players outside your home network
Remote access requires three things: the correct public address, an inbound firewall rule, and a router or gateway rule that forwards the server port to the host computer’s local address. The exact screens and field names vary by router and hosting environment, so use the documentation for your own equipment. Share only the address and port that remote players need; do not expose administration interfaces.
If local players connect but people outside the network cannot, check the public address, forwarding destination, firewall rule, and whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent unsolicited inbound connections even when the router configuration looks correct. In that case, use a hosting environment with a reachable address or an ISP option that supplies inbound connectivity.
Do not change the port while troubleshooting unless necessary. Every client must use the same reachable address and port, while the internal forwarding rule must point to the machine actually running Java.
Set up the client for multiplayer
- Install Minecraft 1.10.2 and the Forge version expected by the Forever Stranded release.
- Install the client files for the same Forever Stranded release as the server, specifically V-2.0.9 when using the current project release.
- Launch the matching Forge profile once so the client creates its folders.
- Enter the server address supplied by the host and connect only after the server console shows it is ready.
Keep copies of the version information when inviting friends. “Minecraft 1.10.2” alone is not enough: the Forge build, mod list, configuration assumptions, and Forever Stranded release also need to match. A mismatch commonly produces a mod-list rejection, missing-channel message, or a disconnect during the loading screen.

Managed hosting removes most router and operating-system work. CurseForge’s official hosting guide describes this sequence: choose a modpack with a matching server pack, choose a plan, select a region, enter the server details, and purchase. Before paying, confirm that Forever Stranded itself appears in the provider’s current catalog and that the exact V-2.0.9 server pack is supported; a generic Forge slot is not proof of pack compatibility.

The guide gives example plan sizes of 4 GB RAM for 1–5 players, 8 GB for 6–15 players, and 12 GB for 16–25 players, with CPU and monthly-price tiers shown in that guide. Those are example/current guide values, not a guarantee for every provider or date. Verify the live offer, recurring price, cancellation terms, included backups, and available regions at checkout.
Questions to ask a host before purchase
- Can it deploy the official Forever Stranded server pack rather than only a generic Forge server?
- Is V-2.0.9 available, and can you upload the supplied archive if it is not in a one-click list?
- How much RAM and CPU are dedicated to the instance, and are those resources shared?
- Which regions are available, and where are most players located?
- Are automated backups included, how many restore points are retained, and can you download a backup?
- Can you edit launch arguments, Java selection, and server properties?
- What happens if the pack requires a library or script the panel does not install automatically?
Backups and safe maintenance
Back up the world directory before any mod, configuration, Java, or pack-version change. Also retain the server configuration and the exact server-pack archive used to create the world. A backup that contains only the world but not the matching configuration may not restore the same behavior.
Stop the server cleanly before copying a live world. Label each backup with its date and the pack version, and keep at least one copy outside the host machine. Test that an archive can be opened before deleting an older restore point. For a managed host, check whether its dashboard backup is downloadable; provider snapshots are not a substitute for an independent copy.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The script closes immediately
- Open the console output or log and find the first error, not the final cascade.
- Confirm the script points to a 64-bit Java 8 executable compatible with the 1.10.2 Forge pack.
- Check that the archive was fully extracted and that Forge libraries remain in their supplied locations.
- Run the script from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
The server stops at the EULA message
Open the generated EULA file, read the license, set the acceptance value exactly as instructed, save it, and start the script again. Merely creating an empty file or changing a differently named setting will not satisfy the server.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare both sides item by item: Minecraft 1.10.2, Forge, the Forever Stranded release, and the installed mod files. Reinstall the client from the matching release rather than copying a random mods folder. Do not add or remove individual mods until the unmodified pack connects successfully.

Only the host can connect
Test the server locally first. If local connections work, verify the host firewall, router forwarding destination, public address, and port. Ask whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. If the server is behind a managed network, the provider may need to supply a reachable endpoint.
The world becomes unstable after an edit
Stop the server, restore the most recent backup, and undo the last mod or configuration change. Do not keep launching a damaged world while experimenting; repeated writes can make recovery harder. Record which file changed so the same mismatch is not reintroduced.
Players experience severe lag or memory pressure
Check the server log and the host’s memory use while players are online. Ensure the heap is not set so high that the operating system starts swapping. If the host plan or machine is undersized, move to a plan with more allocated resources rather than repeatedly restarting the same constrained instance.
A practical launch checklist
- Server archive and client release both identify Forever Stranded V-2.0.9, or another intentionally matched release.
- All files were extracted into a clean directory, including Forge libraries, mods, configs, templates, and scripts.
- The launch script uses compatible 64-bit Java 8 and a heap size that leaves operating-system headroom.
- The EULA was read and accepted, and the server reaches its ready state.
- Every player has Minecraft 1.10.2, the expected Forge version, and the same pack files.
- The firewall allows the Java server, and router forwarding is configured when remote access is required.
- The public address, port, and local test connection have been verified.
- A clean, dated backup exists before players begin building.
What multiplayer changes in Forever Stranded
Multiplayer does not remove the pack’s survival systems. The group still has to manage heat, secure water and food, and progress through quests on the dry-world map. Assigning early tasks—such as one player handling water logistics while another follows quest objectives—can reduce duplicated effort, but the server software itself does not provide a special cooperative mode beyond allowing multiple matching clients to join the world.
The project describes its premise as “Forever alone on a dry hot world can you survive and rebuild” and identifies water in the heat as the first major challenge. Those systems are why a stable server, reliable backups, and a consistent client pack matter from the first session.
