For the current release, download Frozen Apocalypse (Server Pack) for Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, version 9.2.0, extract it on a Java Edition host, run the launch files included with that server pack, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and then connect players through your LAN or forwarded Java port. Do not combine this pack with the older 1.20.1 Forge release or with a client using a different version.

Frozen Apocalypse is built around an eternal winter: extreme cold, scarce resources and snowstorms turn ordinary Minecraft progression into a shelter-and-supply problem. Expect players to construct protection, plan food and materials, explore carefully and cooperate. This is not a small collection of cosmetic client mods, so the server needs a deliberate setup and ongoing backups.
Mojang’s server-download guidance states that this server setup is compatible only with Minecraft: Java Edition. A Bedrock client cannot join this NeoForge Java server through the normal server connection process.

Choose one exact version before downloading anything
Every participant must use the same Minecraft version, mod loader and Frozen Apocalypse pack release. Treat those three values as one compatibility key:
| Component | Current release in this guide | Older release you may encounter |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 | 1.20.1 |
| Loader | NeoForge | Forge |
| Frozen Apocalypse version | 9.2.0 | Older pack versions |
| Server download | 1.21.1 NeoForge server pack, 736.3 MB ZIP | 1.20.1 Forge server-pack release |
Download the server-pack file rather than copying a player’s client-only mods folder. A server pack can contain dedicated launch files, server-side configuration and the correct file layout; a client folder may include graphics, menu or other client-only files that cannot run on a dedicated server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your group has already started a 1.20.1 Forge world, either keep that entire installation on its original release or plan a controlled migration. Do not point 1.21.1 NeoForge clients at the 1.20.1 server, and do not put the 1.20.1 Forge server pack in a 1.21.1 installation.
Requirements and preparation
A Java Edition host
You need a computer or hosted instance that can run Java Edition server software continuously. Mojang treats the Java server software as separate from Bedrock server setup. Install a Java runtime compatible with your Minecraft and NeoForge release; the cited pack information does not specify a pack-specific Java major version, so check the release’s included instructions and the NeoForge requirements for the exact build you selected.
Keep the server in a dedicated directory, not inside your personal client installation. The directory will contain the world, configuration, logs, libraries and backups, and separating it makes updates and restores safer.
Storage and permissions
The ZIP alone is 736.3 MB. Leave substantially more free storage than that because extraction creates many files and the world, logs and backups grow during play. Give the account running the server read and write access to the entire directory. On a home machine, prevent sleep while the server is running.
Players’ client installations
- Install the same Minecraft 1.21.1 profile used by the server.
- Use NeoForge for the 9.2.0 release, not Forge.
- Install the matching Frozen Apocalypse client pack version supplied for that release.
- Have every player close the game and launcher while changing versions, so files are not locked or partially replaced.
Self-hosting: complete setup procedure
1. Create and protect the server folder
- Create a new folder dedicated to this installation, such as a folder named for the 1.21.1 NeoForge release.
- Restrict everyday use of the folder to the server account and trusted administrators. Do not store unrelated personal files there.
- Decide where backups will live before the first world is created. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure or accidental deletion.
2. Download the matching server pack
From the Frozen Apocalypse project, select the server-pack download labelled Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and version 9.2.0. Confirm the file is the server pack before downloading; the 736.3 MB listing refers to that ZIP. If the project page offers a newer release when you set up the server, use one release consistently for both clients and server and record the choice for your group.

3. Extract the pack without changing its layout
Extract the ZIP directly into the dedicated server folder. Keep the folders and files in the structure provided by the author. Do not drag individual client mods into the server and do not rename loader libraries or launch files unless the release instructions explicitly require it.
4. Run the supplied NeoForge launch files
Use the installer, script or server launch file included with that server-pack release. The exact filename can differ between pack versions and operating systems, so use the files shipped with 9.2.0 instead of assuming a generic vanilla JAR name. The first run normally creates the initial configuration and stops when the EULA has not yet been accepted.
Read the console output if the launch file closes immediately. A missing Java runtime, an incompatible Java version, a blocked executable permission or a corrupted extraction will usually be reported there. Fix that first rather than repeatedly double-clicking the file.
5. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Mojang’s setup guide says the first launch creates eula.txt. Open that file, change eula=false to eula=true, save it and run the same supplied launch command again. This is an explicit license acknowledgement; the server will not complete startup while it remains false.
6. Wait for a clean first startup
Allow the server to finish generating its world and configuration. A successful startup leaves a running console rather than returning immediately to the command prompt. Stop it through the console’s normal stop command after the first startup if you need to edit settings before inviting players; closing the terminal or killing the process can damage files that are being written.
Configure server.properties before inviting players
Stop the server, edit server.properties with a plain-text editor, save it and start the supplied launch file again. The exact available keys can vary with the Minecraft release, but these are the settings most groups should review:
| Setting area | What to decide | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Server name or MOTD | How the server appears in the multiplayer list | Use a recognizable name and include the pack release so players know which installation they are joining. |
| Difficulty | How punishing combat and survival should be | Choose it before the first serious session; changing difficulty later can alter the intended progression. |
| Maximum players | Who is allowed to occupy slots | Set a limit appropriate to the host’s observed performance; no pack-specific player-count benchmark is established. |
| Whitelist | Whether unapproved accounts can join | Enable it for a private group and add trusted players through the server console. |
| Java listening port | Which TCP port accepts player connections | The standard Java example is 25565. If you choose another port, forward and share that same number. |
query.port |
Optional server-query traffic | It is separate from the player connection port. Change it only when you know a monitoring or listing tool needs it. |
Keep administrative access limited. Give operator privileges only to people who need them, and never publish the console or remote-management credentials in a public chat.

Connect on a home network or over the internet
LAN players
Players on the same local network should use the host computer’s local IP address and the configured Java port. Test this while everyone is at home before attempting an internet connection. A successful LAN test confirms that the server is listening and that the clients match, without introducing router or public-address variables.
Internet players
Players outside the home need the host’s public address and a router/firewall rule that forwards the configured Java port to the server computer. With the default port, that normally means forwarding TCP 25565 to the host’s local address. Mojang warns that home-network configuration requires care; router menus differ, and exposing a service creates an attack surface.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using a DHCP reservation or an equivalent method.
- Allow the Java server process through the operating system firewall only on the profiles you need.
- Forward the same player port configured in
server.propertiesfrom the router to that stable local address. - Start the server and test from a connection outside the home network, such as a trusted player’s network or a mobile hotspot.
- Share the public address only with people you trust, and keep the whitelist enabled for a private world.
If LAN works but internet connections time out, inspect the firewall and port-forward target before changing the modpack. If neither LAN nor internet works, check that the console reached a ready state and that every client uses Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Frozen Apocalypse 9.2.0.
How much RAM does Frozen Apocalypse need?
No cited source provides a defensible, pack-specific RAM benchmark or a tested maximum player count for Frozen Apocalypse. Do not treat a number copied from an unrelated modpack as a guarantee. The eternal-winter mechanics, world generation, exploration distance, loaded chunks and simultaneous players all affect memory and CPU demand.

Instead, choose a host with adjustable memory and size it from observation:
- Leave enough memory for the operating system, Java process overhead and file caching; assigning all physical memory to the game can make the host less stable.
- Start with a conservative player limit and raise it only after several sessions show stable tick times and no repeated out-of-memory errors.
- Watch the server console and host metrics while players explore new terrain, travel in different directions and encounter storms or other intensive mechanics.
- Increase the allocation when the Java process approaches its limit, garbage collection pauses become frequent or the server reports out-of-memory failures. Investigate CPU and storage speed as well; more RAM cannot fix every lag source.
- On managed hosting, choose a plan whose memory can be upgraded without rebuilding the world, and verify the provider’s advertised allocation rather than relying on a generic “modded” label.
Because there is no published pack-specific benchmark here, state your chosen memory allocation as a starting configuration for your own group, not as an official requirement or a promise of a particular player count.
Home server or managed Minecraft hosting?
Both approaches can run the same NeoForge server pack. The meaningful differences are administration, networking and control rather than a special edition of Frozen Apocalypse.

| Setup effort | You install Java, extract the pack, run updates and troubleshoot the machine. | A control panel may provide installation or deployment assistance, but confirm that it supports the exact 1.21.1 NeoForge release. |
| Files and backups | Full access to worlds, configs, logs and backup destinations. | Convenient panels and scheduled backups may exist; verify retention, download access and restore procedure. |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding and public-address changes. | The provider normally supplies a reachable address, but verify whether a dedicated address or extra networking fee applies. |
| Performance capacity | Limited by your machine, connection and ability to leave it running. | Depends on the purchased allocation and the provider’s hardware; no comparable pack-specific allocation is established here. |
| Location and latency | Players connect to your home internet location. | You can often choose a data-center region; check the actual location available at checkout. |
| Price | No hosting bill, but you supply hardware, electricity and internet service. | Recurring price varies by memory, storage, location and extras; verify the current total before ordering. |
| Support | You are responsible for Java, NeoForge, router and world recovery. | Support scope differs by provider; confirm whether modpack installation and world restoration are included. |
Self-host at home when you want complete file control, already have a reliable always-on machine and are comfortable with router administration. Choose managed hosting when your group needs a control panel, a provider-managed network address or a server that remains online without leaving a personal computer running.

The Frozen Apocalypse project page promotes BisectHosting, and DedicatedMinecraft.host, WinterNode and BoxToPlay advertise installation or hosting pages for this named pack. Those listings establish that commercial options are marketed, not that their current plans are equivalent. Pricing, memory, uptime, support quality, data-center geography and affiliate terms are not established by the pack information and can change.
Before ordering, ask the provider to confirm all of the following in writing or in the current control panel:
- Support for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and Frozen Apocalypse 9.2.0, rather than only an older Forge release.
- The actual memory allocation, storage quota and whether upgrades can be applied without deleting the world.
- How the pack is installed, whether you can upload the official server pack yourself and whether custom configuration files are permitted.
- Backup frequency, retention length, off-site storage and the exact steps for restoring a previous world.
- Server location, expected network route for your players and whether a dedicated address or unusual port is required.
- What support covers: launcher errors, Java or NeoForge startup failures, mod conflicts, world corruption and version changes may be treated differently.
- The recurring price after any introductory period and any fees for extra storage, backups, addresses or migrations.
Do not assume a one-click button installs the correct release. Read the resulting version and loader in the panel, check the server console after deployment and make an independent backup before changing the installation.

Backups, updates and world safety
The related Frozen Apocalypse mod documentation warns that its world-changing mechanics can destroy a world and recommends backups. Apply that warning to the entire modpack world, especially before changing pack versions, loaders or individual mods.
A practical backup routine
- Stop the server cleanly before making a full copy. A running world may have files open or unflushed.
- Copy the world directory together with configuration and server files needed to recreate the exact installation.
- Store at least one copy outside the server machine or hosting account.
- Label backups with the Minecraft version, loader, Frozen Apocalypse version and date.
- Periodically test restoring a copy in a separate folder. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Updating without mixing installations
Read the release notes for the target pack version, stop the server and make a verified backup. Update clients and server as one coordinated change. Do not overwrite a working 1.21.1 NeoForge installation with files from a 1.20.1 Forge pack, and do not delete the old installation until the new world or migration has been tested.
Troubleshooting common startup and connection failures
The server refuses to start and mentions the EULA
Open eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save it and rerun the supplied launch file. If the file is recreated, make sure you edited the copy in the active server directory rather than a duplicate extraction.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
A client reports an incompatible mod or loader
Compare all three compatibility values: Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Frozen Apocalypse 9.2.0. Remove the 1.20.1 Forge profile from the client’s selected installation, or deliberately return the whole group to that older release. Do not try to solve a loader mismatch by copying random JARs between folders.
The launch script closes immediately
Run it from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check for a missing or incompatible Java runtime, execute permissions on the script, a damaged extraction or insufficient file permissions. Use the launch files included with the server pack instead of substituting a generic vanilla command.
Players on the same network cannot join
Confirm that the console finished startup, that the player is using the host’s local address and that the operating-system firewall permits Java on the local network. Verify the port in server.properties; the default Java example is 25565.
LAN works but remote players time out
Check the router forward, the host’s current local address and the firewall rule. Forward the configured Java player port to the correct machine, then test from outside the home network. A changing public address can also make an old connection address invalid.
The world becomes unstable after a mod or version change
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup and return both clients and server to the recorded Minecraft, loader and pack versions. Do not continue experimenting on the only copy of the world.

Pre-launch checklist
- Server and every client show Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Frozen Apocalypse 9.2.0.
- The official server-pack ZIP was extracted intact; no client-only
modsfolder was substituted. - The compatible Java runtime is installed and the supplied launch files run from the dedicated folder.
eula.txtcontainseula=true.- The MOTD, difficulty, player limit and whitelist are set in
server.properties. - The configured Java port is known; 25565 is the standard example.
- LAN connectivity has been tested before internet forwarding.
- Remote access uses a narrowly scoped firewall rule and router forward.
- A clean backup exists before the first major expedition and before every update.
- Everyone knows which release to install and where to report console errors.
Which hosting route is right for your group?
Use a home server if you value unrestricted access to files and backups and can maintain Java, networking and hardware yourself. Use managed hosting if avoiding router configuration, keeping the server online and using a control panel matter more than direct control over the machine. In either case, the non-negotiable requirement is version consistency: Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Frozen Apocalypse 9.2.0 must remain aligned across the server and every player until you deliberately plan an upgrade.
