How to Host a Fungal Infection Co-op Minecraft Server (Forge 1.20.1)

A practical guide to hosting The Fungal Infection | Co-Op Base Defense on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, including the v2.1.0 server pack, six-gigabyte four-player baseline, networking, backups, and troubleshooting.

To host The Fungal Infection | Co-Op Base Defense, install the pack’s matching Forge 1.20.1 server files, give the server a sensible memory budget, and make the instance reachable to your group. CurseForge lists version 2.1.0 as the current main file and provides a separate server-pack download. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge build, and modpack version as the server.

You can run it on a computer at home or use a managed Minecraft host that advertises this exact Forge pack. Self-hosting minimizes recurring cost but leaves Java, networking, backups, updates, and uptime to you. A managed host removes most of that administration for a monthly fee.

What you are hosting

The project is The Fungal Infection | Co-Op Base Defense, a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its description presents a cooperative and single-player base-defense game in which a Cordyceps-like fungus spreads through the Overworld. CurseForge identifies The Fungal Infection v2.1.0 as the current main file, uploaded March 22, 2026, and lists a matching server pack.

CurseForge search captures from 2026 displayed 410,770 downloads on the project page and 426,072 on the files listing. Those are page totals at capture time, not a measure of server capacity, uptime, or quality. The project author describes the pack as lightweight and suitable for cooperative play, but a real server still needs enough CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity for the way your group plays.

Version matching is mandatory

The server and every connecting client need the same Minecraft release, Forge version, and modpack release. A client on another pack version can fail during the handshake, reject registry data, or load a world with incompatible settings. Start a new installation on v2.1.0 unless an existing world has been deliberately pinned to another release.

Write the three version identifiers down in your server notes. “Minecraft 1.20.1” alone is not enough: two installations can use the same Minecraft release while differing in Forge build, mod list, or configuration. When a friend cannot connect, compare the complete profile rather than replacing individual files at random.

Hardware and software requirements

Server-side baseline

  • A computer or hosted instance that can remain online while players are using it.
  • The Forge server build required by the pack, installed separately from any client launcher profile.
  • The matching server-pack archive extracted into the Forge server directory.
  • Enough storage for the server files, world saves, logs, and backups.
  • Administrative access to the operating system or hosting control panel.

The server needs continuing access to its files while the world is running. Avoid storing the live directory in a location that synchronizes, renames, or locks files unexpectedly. Keep backups outside the live directory so a failed update or accidental deletion cannot remove both the world and its only backup.

Player-side baseline

  • Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • Forge and the exact Fungal Infection pack release used by the server.
  • A launcher profile that has been tested in single-player or on a local instance before joining the shared world.

Have every player finish the launcher installation before the first group session. A short single-player launch can expose a missing download or broken profile without risking the shared world. Players should close other profiles and select the named Fungal Infection profile explicitly instead of relying on a launcher’s last-used instance.

Memory guidance

The project author recommends 6 GB of server RAM for four players. Treat that as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Increase the allocation when the group grows, view distance is raised, or additional mods and large worlds are introduced. Leave memory for the operating system and background services; assigning every available gigabyte to Java can make the machine less stable instead of improving it.

Version 2.0.0 release notes claim “up to 500% better server performance.” That is the developer’s stated improvement, not an independent benchmark, so use real tick time, memory use, and player experience on your own machine when deciding whether more resources are needed. A server can appear fine with one player and struggle when several players explore different chunks at once.

Choose a hosting method

Option What you manage What the provider manages Published details
Self-hosted computer Forge and Java installation, firewall and router rules, backups, updates, security, and uptime Nothing beyond your own hardware and internet connection Lowest recurring service cost; performance depends on your machine and connection
GhostCap Pack settings, player permissions, and version choices Server provisioning, network access, and advertised DDoS protection Advertises one-click installation, unlimited slots, instant setup, and a displayed starting price of $16.99 per month; verify the current plan and allocated resources before purchase
Game Host Bros Pack settings, player permissions, and version choices Provisioning, network access, and support under the selected plan Advertises support for the Forge 1.20.1 pack, instant setup, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support; verify current pricing and limits
mTxServ Pack settings, player permissions, and version choices One-click deployment and the host’s infrastructure Advertises that a server can be online within minutes; verify regions, backups, and the available pack version

Do not interpret a host’s listing as an endorsement by the mod author. Before paying, confirm the exact Forge release, RAM allocation, backup controls, data-center location, cancellation terms, and whether you can pin v2.1.0 instead of being moved automatically to a newer build.

When self-hosting is the better value

Self-hosting has no separate hosting subscription, which can be attractive for a small group that already owns a computer capable of running the pack. The trade-off is your time. You are responsible for installing Java and Forge, keeping the machine patched, configuring the firewall and router, making backups, and fixing outages. Your home upload connection and power reliability also become part of the server’s availability.

When a managed host is worth the fee

A managed plan is useful when nobody wants to leave a home computer running, expose a residential connection, or troubleshoot Forge installation. The monthly price buys infrastructure and a control panel, not immunity from modpack problems. You still need to choose the right pack, grant player access, monitor the world, and keep a recoverable backup. Check whether “unlimited slots” has a practical memory or CPU limit; a slot count is not a performance guarantee.

Self-host the server-pack installation

The following process is deliberately platform-neutral. Java paths, firewall interfaces, router menus, and startup commands differ between Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, and hosting panels, so use the documentation for your operating system whenever a command or menu label is not identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Pin the pack release

  1. In CurseForge, select The Fungal Infection v2.1.0 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
  2. Record the exact profile version and Forge build shown by the launcher.
  3. Have every player install that same profile before anyone joins the shared world.

If the group is continuing an older world, decide first whether its current release must remain pinned. Do not update one client “just to test” on the live server. Make a copy of the world and test the upgrade in an isolated directory instead.

2. Download the matching server pack

  1. Open the project’s Minecraft 1.20 server-pack section.
  2. Download the archive labelled Server Pack for v2.1.0.
  3. Keep the archive with your server notes so a later administrator can identify which release is installed.

The server pack is the appropriate starting point for a dedicated instance. Do not assume that copying a client’s entire .minecraft or launcher folder creates a valid server; client-only files and settings can cause startup or connection errors.

3. Create a clean Forge server directory

Make a new directory dedicated to this server. Do not point the server at a client installation and do not mix files from another Minecraft release. Install the Forge server build required by the pack into this directory, following Forge’s instructions for your operating system. A clean directory makes it possible to back up the world and roll back the pack without accidentally copying unrelated mods or settings.

Choose a location with adequate free storage and permissions for the account that will run the server. Keep administrator notes nearby but outside the live directory. Include the pack version, Forge build, server address, backup dates, and any configuration changes so another trusted administrator can recover the instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Extract the server pack without flattening it

Extract the downloaded archive into the Forge server directory and preserve its folder structure. Replacing or flattening directories can leave configuration files, scripts, or libraries in the wrong location. After extraction, review the included configuration before the first real launch. Look for settings that affect world generation, difficulty, player access, and performance, and record any changes you make.

If your archive utility creates an extra top-level folder, check where the Forge launcher and configuration files actually landed before starting. The server should use one intentional directory, not a nested copy that leaves required files one level deeper than expected. Do not delete unfamiliar files simply because you do not recognize their names; compare the pack contents and restore a clean extraction if necessary.

5. Accept the EULA and perform the first launch

  1. Start the Forge server once using the launcher supplied with the installation or the startup method documented by your host.
  2. When the server creates eula.txt, read Mojang’s EULA and set eula=true only if you agree to it.
  3. Launch the server again and wait for startup to complete. The console should stop at a ready state rather than reporting a missing mod, wrong Java version, or failed registry load.

Stop the process cleanly before editing files. Force-closing the window during world saves can damage the world or lose recent progress. On the first successful launch, note how long startup takes and save the initial log with your installation records.

6. Set an appropriate memory allocation

Configure the Java process through your operating system’s launcher or the host panel. Use the author’s four-player recommendation as your initial allocation, then watch actual usage while everyone is online. If the process repeatedly approaches its limit, the console reports out-of-memory errors, or ticks fall behind during exploration, increase headroom or reduce view distance before adding more mods.

  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

Do not judge memory from an idle console. Test during the busiest expected activity: several players loading new terrain, fighting, and returning to the base. Record the allocation and observed behavior so you can tell whether a later change helped. If the host sells several plans, compare usable RAM rather than only the advertised player-slot count.

7. Make the server reachable

For a home server, allow the Minecraft service through the operating-system firewall and create a router port-forwarding rule to the server computer. Reserve that computer’s local address if your router supports DHCP reservations, so the rule does not break after a reboot. The exact port and menu names depend on your server configuration and router; follow the documentation for those devices rather than copying a universal recipe.

Test from outside the home network when possible. A connection that works from the host computer does not prove that friends on the internet can reach it. If your internet service uses restrictions that prevent inbound connections, a managed host may be simpler than repeatedly changing router settings.

For a rented instance, use the address and port displayed in the provider’s control panel. Confirm that the panel’s network rule, firewall, and server process are all enabled. Never publish administrative credentials in a public chat. Share only the connection address and the instructions players need for the pinned profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Test with one player, then the whole group

  1. Connect locally or from a second machine using the address the other players will use.
  2. Check that the world loads, blocks and entities behave normally, and the console is free of repeated errors.
  3. Invite the rest of the group and have everyone join with the pinned client profile.
  4. Stop the server and make a backup before changing configuration or pack versions.

Ask players to report the exact error text and the profile they launched. “It does not work” is difficult to diagnose, while a mismatch message, timeout, or crash log points to different fixes. Test a normal stop and restart before advertising the server as ready.

Managed hosting setup

A managed host is useful when you do not want to configure router access, keep a home computer online, or maintain Java and Forge yourself. Select the Fungal Infection pack from the host’s installer if it is listed, then verify the resulting Minecraft and Forge versions before players connect.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • How much RAM is included, and is it dedicated or shared?
  • Can the panel pin the exact v2.1.0 pack and Forge build?
  • How often are backups made, how many are retained, and can you download them?
  • Which geographic regions are available, and where will most players connect from?
  • Is DDoS protection included, and what support hours and response channels apply?
  • Can you upload a custom server pack or restore an existing world?
  • What happens to the installation when the modpack publisher releases an update?
  • Can you access logs and change the memory allocation without opening a support ticket?
  • What are the renewal price, cancellation rules, storage limits, and restoration fees?

GhostCap advertises one-click installation, instant setup, DDoS protection, unlimited slots, and a starting price of $16.99 per month for this pack. Game Host Bros advertises Forge 1.20.1 support, instant setup, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support. mTxServ advertises one-click deployment and an online server within minutes. These are provider statements; verify current pricing, resources, regions, backup policies, and pack versions in the order flow because plans can change.

After deployment, inspect the installed files or panel information rather than assuming the installer selected the newest compatible release. Confirm the world-save location, create a manual backup, and identify the restore procedure while the server is still empty. It is easier to learn a panel’s controls before a valuable cooperative world is at risk.

Backups, permissions, and routine administration

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Stop the server cleanly before copying the world, configuration, and mod list, or use the host’s documented snapshot process. Keep at least one copy outside the live server and periodically test restoring it to a separate directory. A version note attached to each backup helps you select the correct files after an unsuccessful upgrade.

Give operator privileges only to trusted players. Separate ordinary player access from administrative access, and avoid posting control-panel passwords or private addresses in public channels. Keep a short change log covering pack updates, configuration edits, world migrations, and the person who made each change.

During a full-group session, watch logs, memory, and tick performance. Repeated errors should be investigated rather than hidden by restarting. If the machine hosts other services, account for their CPU and memory use when choosing the Java allocation. A stable, modest configuration is preferable to an allocation that leaves the operating system starved.

World upgrades and rollback planning

The v2.0.0 release notes say that many mods changed, advise using older worlds at the owner’s risk, and announce removal of the previously official server. A fresh world on v2.1.0 is therefore the least ambiguous choice.

Before upgrading an existing world

  1. Stop the server normally and copy the entire world directory, server configuration, and mod list to storage outside the live server directory.
  2. Record the current Minecraft, Forge, and pack versions.
  3. Install the new pack in a separate test directory rather than overwriting the working installation.
  4. Load the backup copy and inspect key areas, inventories, machines, and progression systems.
  5. Only migrate the live world after the group accepts the test results.

If the upgraded world fails, restore the backup and return every client to the previous matching profile. Do not let one player join with the new pack while others continue using the old one. Treat a successful server boot as only the first migration test; verify the places and systems your group depends on.

Official-server status

The project’s history is easy to misunderstand. Version 1.0.1 added an official server, but the v2.0.0 changelog states that the “now closed” official server was removed. Do not assume there is an operating official instance to join; plan to host your own server or use a managed provider.

Troubleshooting common failures

Players cannot connect

  • Confirm that the server process is running and has reached its ready state.
  • Check the address and port shown by the host panel or configured for the home server.
  • Verify the operating-system firewall and router forwarding rule.
  • Compare each player’s Minecraft, Forge, and modpack versions character for character.
  • Check whether the player is using the intended launcher profile rather than a similarly named installation.

Forge reports missing or mismatched mods

Reinstall the exact client profile and compare it with a clean copy of the server pack. Do not copy random files from another modpack. A single changed mod or configuration can prevent the handshake. If only one player fails, compare that player’s profile first; if everyone fails after a server change, restore the last known-good server backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server crashes during startup

Read the first meaningful error in the console or latest log, not only the final shutdown line. Check for an incorrect Forge build, files extracted into an extra nested directory, insufficient memory, or a configuration left over from another release. Restore the clean server directory and reapply changes one at a time. Keep the failed log so you can identify the change that triggered the crash.

Lag appears when everyone explores

Watch memory use and tick timing while the problem occurs. Lower view distance, close unnecessary applications, and test with the recommended player count before adding RAM. A faster connection does not fix a server that is CPU- or memory-bound. Compare behavior at the base and in newly generated terrain; the difference can show whether exploration load is the trigger.

A world will not load after an update

Stop immediately, restore the pre-update backup, and return clients to the previous pack profile. Treat the v2.0.0 warning about changed mods as a migration risk, not as a promise that every older world will convert safely. Do not continue experimenting on the only copy of the world.

The server starts but friends time out

First distinguish a mod handshake failure from a network timeout. A handshake error usually points to version or mod differences; a timeout points toward the address, port, firewall, router, or host network path. Confirm the address from the control panel, check that the process is listening, and test from a connection outside the host’s local network.

Administration checklist

  • Write down the installed Minecraft, Forge, and pack versions.
  • Keep the server pack archive and configuration changes in a separate administrator folder.
  • Back up the world before every version or configuration change.
  • Test a restore periodically instead of assuming a backup is usable.
  • Give operator privileges only to trusted players.
  • Monitor logs, memory, and tick performance during a full-group session.
  • Tell players which profile to launch and where to report connection errors.
  • Review host pricing, RAM, regions, and backup retention when a managed plan renews.
  • Record the server address, port, startup method, and clean-shutdown procedure for anyone who may administer it.
  • Keep a known-good copy of the previous pack when testing an upgrade.

With the matching Forge server pack, a correctly configured network path, and backups made before changes, a four-player co-op world can start on the pack author’s recommended memory baseline and scale as your group’s world and settings grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much RAM does The Fungal Infection server need?

The pack author recommends 6 GB of server RAM for four players. Use that as a starting point, leave memory for the operating system, and add headroom if the group grows, view distance is high, or extra mods and large worlds increase load.

Can I use the Fungal Infection server pack?

Yes. CurseForge lists a separate Server Pack for v2.1.0 in the Minecraft 1.20 server-pack section. Extract it into a clean Forge server directory and preserve its folder structure.

Do all players need the same Forge and modpack version?

Yes. Every client must match the server’s Minecraft 1.20.1 release, Forge build, and Fungal Infection pack version. A mismatch can stop the Forge handshake or cause registry errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an official Fungal Infection server?

Version 1.0.1 added an official server, but the v2.0.0 changelog says the now-closed official server was removed. Plan to self-host or use a managed provider rather than expecting an operating official instance.

Should I start a new world on v2.1.0?

A new v2.1.0 world is the least ambiguous choice. If you upgrade an existing world, make a complete backup, test the copy in a separate directory, and keep every client on the same version during the migration.

Is self-hosting cheaper than renting a host?

Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting charge but makes you responsible for Java, Forge, networking, backups, security, hardware, and uptime. Managed hosts charge monthly but handle much of the infrastructure. Compare RAM, backups, support, location, and version-pinning ability rather than price alone.

Why can one player connect while another cannot?

The failing player may be using a different launcher profile, Minecraft version, Forge build, or modpack release. Compare the complete profile and the exact error, then verify the server address and port if the profile matches.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What should I verify before buying managed hosting?

Confirm usable RAM, exact Forge and pack version, version pinning, backup frequency and downloads, region, DDoS protection, support terms, custom-pack or world-upload options, storage limits, renewal price, and cancellation rules.

The Bottom Line

Install The Fungal Infection v2.1.0 server pack on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, match that profile on every client, and begin with the author’s 6 GB recommendation for four players. Self-host for the lowest recurring cost if you can manage networking and backups; choose a managed host for simpler deployment. In either case, pin versions and back up the world before every change.
