The Steam dedicated-server app is 232130 and supports Windows and Linux. For a public server, network configuration is just as important as installing the files; a server that runs locally but is not reachable from the internet is not ready for players.
The clearest current procedure comes from a community guide published by 2hours.gg on 19 August 2026, not from a current Tripwire manual. Use it as practical, build-specific guidance and verify names and paths against the files downloaded for your installation. The steps below also identify where older community advice conflicts with newer instructions.

What you need before installing
A dedicated server is a separate program from the normal Killing Floor 2 client. Install it on a machine that can remain online while players connect. That machine may be a Windows PC, a Linux host, or a rented managed game-server service. The available material confirms that Steam lists the dedicated-server app for Windows and Linux, but it does not establish a current official CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth requirement.
- SteamCMD: Valve’s command-line Steam installer is used to download and update the server.
- Steam app ID: 232130 is the dedicated-server application identified by the current community setup guide.
- Administrative access: You need permission to install software, create firewall rules, and, for public hosting, change the router’s port-forwarding rules.
- A stable network path: Friends on the internet must be able to reach the host’s public address. A private LAN server does not require internet port forwarding.
- Backups: Keep a copy of configuration files before updates, especially because the current guide warns that repeating validation can overwrite INI files.
Do not treat figures from a 2015 early-access guide—such as its 5–10 GB free-space and 5 Mb/s upload suggestions—as current requirements. Steam now labels that guide removed and incompatible, and its port list conflicts with newer advice.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the operating system, files, logs, mods, Workshop content, and restart schedule. It also makes you responsible for patching the host, protecting administrator credentials, troubleshooting crashes, and exposing the correct ports. A managed service handles much of the operating-system and network work in exchange for a recurring fee and whatever limits its plan imposes.
| Decision point | Self-hosted server | Managed game-server service |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system updates and restarts | You perform them and decide when downtime occurs. | The provider usually supplies a control panel or support process; exact automation is provider-specific. |
| Configuration and logs | Full access to local INI files, launch settings, and logs. | Access depends on the service’s panel, file manager, and policy. |
| Workshop maps and custom content | You install and maintain the content yourself. | Support varies by provider and plan; confirm before purchasing. |
| Player slots and modes | Constrained by the game’s mode limits and your host; vanilla Survival remains capped at six players according to the 2026 guide. | Advertised slots and supported modes are plan-specific and should be verified directly. |
| Location and latency | Determined by your own internet connection and physical host location. | You normally choose from the provider’s available regions. |
| Backups | You must copy configurations and any custom content yourself. | Backup frequency and restoration options are provider-specific. |
| Port forwarding and public IP | Required for an internet-facing server unless your network already supplies an equivalent reachable path. | Usually handled by the provider’s infrastructure, but confirm what address and ports players use. |
| Price | No server-rental fee, but you supply hardware, electricity, and internet service. | Monthly pricing was not established in the available technical sources. |
If you want complete file access and are comfortable managing a firewall, self-hosting is the flexible option. If router access, operating-system maintenance, or public addressing is the main obstacle, managed hosting removes those tasks, but you must check its current KF2 version, mode support, map support, location, backups, and cancellation terms.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
1. Install SteamCMD and choose a permanent directory
Install SteamCMD on the machine that will run the server. Before downloading anything, choose an explicit installation directory rather than relying on a temporary or ambiguous working folder. The directory should be writable by the account that will run the server and easy to back up.
2. Download app 232130 anonymously
The contemporary Linux procedure uses Steam’s anonymous login and the dedicated-server app ID:
login anonymous
app_update 232130 validate
quit
Run the equivalent SteamCMD commands on Windows from a command prompt or script, using the installation directory you selected. The important values are the anonymous login and app_update 232130 validate; the surrounding SteamCMD path and scripting syntax differ by operating system.

The command downloads and validates the server files. Allow it to finish before attempting the first launch. If SteamCMD reports that files are current, that is still an installation result only; configuration files may not exist until the server has started once.
First boot: generate configuration before editing
Start once with a stock map
Launch the server with a standard map and a normal game mode, then wait for initialization to complete. On its first boot, KF2 creates the INI files it will use. The 2hours.gg guide summarizes the behavior this way: “KF2 regenerates its config files on first boot and overwrites anything you put there beforehand.” In practical terms, editing files before this boot can waste your changes.

Stop cleanly before changing settings
After the server has finished initializing, stop it normally rather than killing the process. Confirm that the generated configuration files are present, then make a backup copy. Only after that should you edit server name, passwords, gameplay settings, Web Admin, or other options.
Do not mix Windows and Linux file paths
The recent Linux example names LinuxServer-KFGame.ini and LinuxServer-KFWeb.ini. Older Windows instructions refer to different INI names and a batch file. These are not interchangeable instructions: use the paths and binary names created by the platform and server build you actually installed. If a guide tells you to edit a file that does not exist after first boot, stop and verify its platform assumptions instead of creating a substitute file at random.
Configure the server
Set identity and privacy
- Server name: Choose a name that tells players whether the server is private, public, modded, or restricted to a community.
- Game password: Set one when the server is private. Give it to invited players through a separate channel and do not publish it in the server name.
- Admin password: Use a long, unique password. Never reuse it for Steam, email, the operating system, or Web Admin, and never include it in a public post or screenshot.
Choose difficulty and game length
The current setup guide identifies difficulty and game length as launch or configuration choices. Set them deliberately rather than leaving a public server with an unexpected default. Tell players the chosen settings in the server name or community description so they know what they are joining.
Rank #3
Understand the vanilla Survival limit
The 2026 guide states that vanilla Survival is limited to six players. Increasing a MaxPlayers value by itself does not remove that game-mode cap. Do not advertise a larger vanilla Survival lobby on the basis of that setting alone. A different mode, modification, or server build may behave differently, but that is a separate compatibility question that must be verified for the installed version.
Choose a map and game mode
The launch configuration combines a map with a game-mode class and can include difficulty and game-length settings. The guide’s example uses KF-BioticsLab for Survival. It also lists Weekly Survival, Versus Survival, and Endless as available modes. Class names and spelling can change with a build or guide, so confirm the exact value shown by your installed server before publishing a launch script.
Use this as a planning pattern rather than copying an unverified binary name:
<server-binary> <map>?Game=<mode-class> [difficulty/game-length settings]
Replace the placeholders with the executable and parameter syntax supplied for your platform. A Windows batch file and a Linux launch script may use different executable paths, quoting, environment variables, and working directories. Test the line locally first: the server should load the intended map, report the selected mode in its console or log, and remain running without an immediate configuration error.
Open the required network ports
Ports listed by the current setup guide
| Purpose | Protocol | Port | When to expose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | UDP | 7777 | Needed for players to join the server. |
| Steam query | UDP | 27015 | Needed for server discovery and query traffic in the documented setup. |
| Web Admin | TCP | 8080 | Only when Web Admin is enabled and you intend to reach it remotely. |
These are the ports listed by the 19 August 2026 2hours.gg guide. They are not a statement of Tripwire’s official 2026 requirements. Older material also lists UDP 20560 and additional broad port ranges; because those instructions conflict with newer guidance and one old guide is now marked removed and incompatible, do not open extra ports automatically.

Create host-firewall rules
- Allow the server executable, or create explicit inbound rules for UDP 7777 and UDP 27015.
- If Web Admin is enabled, add TCP 8080 only for the addresses that need administrative access where your firewall supports source restrictions.
- Apply the rules to the correct network profile or interface and ensure outbound Steam traffic is not blocked.
- Restart the server after changing rules and inspect the firewall log if a local connection works but an external connection fails.
Configure the router for public play
Forward UDP 7777 and UDP 27015 from the router to the host’s private LAN address. Give the host a stable DHCP reservation or static address so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot. Forward TCP 8080 only if Web Admin must be reachable from outside the LAN; otherwise leave it closed and administer locally.
Router menus vary, but the required fields are normally an external port, internal port, protocol, and destination IP. Do not forward an entire port range when individual rules are sufficient. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work even when the router rule is correct; ask the provider whether you receive a reachable public IPv4 address or use a managed host that supplies public access.
Start, test, and publish the server
Test on the same network first
- Start the server with the selected map and mode.
- Join from another device on the same LAN, using the host’s private address if the server browser does not list it.
- Confirm that the map loads, the game mode is correct, passwords behave as intended, and the server remains stable after a player connects.
- Check the console or log for bind errors, missing files, or a port already in use.
Test from outside the LAN
Use a friend on a different internet connection or another external test method. A successful local join does not prove that router forwarding works. The external test should verify both gameplay connectivity and visibility through Steam’s query path. If the server is reachable by direct address but not listed, investigate the query port and firewall rule separately from the game port.
Publish only safe information
Share the server address, game port, map rotation, mode, difficulty, game length, and—if private—the player password through a controlled channel. Never publish the admin password, Web Admin credentials, private LAN address, or configuration backup.
Updating without losing configuration
Use SteamCMD to update the server files, but back up the INI files first. The current guide specifically cautions that repeating validate during later updates can overwrite INI configuration. That warning means an update workflow should separate file maintenance from configuration preservation.
Best Value
- Includes Killing Floor 2 fan favorite Mrs. Foster Playable Character DLC for free as part of the physical release (in-box)
- Mow down hordes of Zed using a vast arsenal of weapons in Killing Floor 2, or get up close and personal using PlayStation VR in Killing Floor Incursion
- Team up with up to 6 players in online co op, go head to head in 12 player PVP in Killing Floor 2, or watch your friend's back in VR in Killing Floor Incursion's 2 player co op
- Enemies use deadly artificial intelligence to coordinate attacks against you, increasing the difficulty and fear factor; Updated content released every season
- Playstation VR required to play Killing Floor Incursion
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the entire configuration directory, plus any launch scripts and custom-content records, to a dated backup location.
- Run the normal SteamCMD update for app 232130. Avoid adding validation automatically on every update when your chosen guide warns that it can regenerate or replace INIs.
- Compare the updated files with your backup rather than blindly copying old files over new ones; new builds may add settings.
- Start the server and inspect the log before allowing public players to join.
Keep at least one known-good backup outside the server directory. If an update resets settings, stop the process, restore the required values carefully, and retain any newly introduced keys from the updated configuration.
Workshop maps, modes, and customization
Recent provider-published guidance discusses Workshop maps, Web Admin, Linux and Windows, and several modes, but provider marketing statements are not independent guarantees. Treat custom content as a compatibility task: verify that the map or mod supports the server build, install it using the platform-appropriate method, and test it privately before adding it to a public rotation.
Keep a written list of custom items and their versions. When troubleshooting, return temporarily to a stock map such as KF-BioticsLab and a vanilla mode. If the stock server works but a custom map fails, the problem is likely in content installation, version compatibility, or the launch parameter rather than basic networking.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts but no one on the internet can join
- Confirm that the process is listening on the expected ports and that the host firewall allows UDP 7777 and UDP 27015.
- Verify that the router forwards to the host’s current private IP, not an old DHCP address.
- Check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or another inbound-blocking service.
- Test from outside the LAN; testing from the host itself can produce a misleading success.
The server is visible but joining fails
- Check that the game port and query port are both forwarded with UDP, not TCP.
- Confirm that the installed client and server are on compatible builds.
- Try a stock map and mode to eliminate a broken custom-content parameter.
- Review the server log for a bind conflict or a process that exited after startup.
Settings disappear after startup or update
- Stop the server, let first boot finish, and edit only the generated platform-appropriate INI files.
- Restore from the backup made before the update.
- Do not repeatedly run
app_update 232130 validateduring routine updates if it overwrites your configuration. - Check that the account running the server has permission to write the configuration directory.
Web Admin is inaccessible
- Confirm that Web Admin is enabled and that TCP 8080 is allowed by the host firewall.
- If remote administration is necessary, forward TCP 8080 to the correct host; otherwise connect from the LAN and keep the port closed to the internet.
- Use a unique, strong administrator password and change it if it has been exposed.
Changing MaxPlayers does not create a larger Survival lobby
That result is expected for vanilla Survival under the six-player limit stated by the current guide. A higher configuration value does not, by itself, change the mode’s cap.
What is and is not established about requirements
Current community instructions establish a workable installation sequence, app ID, first-boot behavior, documented ports, and the six-player vanilla Survival limit. They do not establish an authoritative 2026 hardware or bandwidth specification from Tripwire. Your actual needs will depend on operating system, player count, mode, map, custom content, and network conditions, so avoid promising a particular CPU, RAM amount, upload speed, or disk size as a universal requirement.
The Steam Community Windows guide updated 27 February 2024 can provide historical, platform-specific clues, but it predates the 2026 setup material and lists ports that should not automatically override the newer procedure. The 2015 early-access guide is explicitly removed and incompatible. When instructions disagree, prefer the newer build-specific procedure, test with a stock server, and document the exact files and ports that work for your installation.
