The fastest way to host a small Minecraft: Java Edition server on DigitalOcean is the official Minecraft 1-Click App. Create a Premium Intel Droplet with 4 GB of RAM and two vCPUs, allow the Java port through the firewall, wait roughly five minutes for world generation, then give players the Droplet’s public IPv4 address. The app installs the server under /opt/minecraft and runs it as a systemd service.

That image is Java-only. Bedrock players need Mojang’s separate Bedrock Dedicated Server installed manually on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. Both the Java server software and Bedrock server software are free; DigitalOcean compute, storage, backups and bandwidth-related resources are billed separately according to your account’s current rates.

Choose the edition before you create a Droplet

Java and Bedrock are different server programs, not two settings on one installation. A Java server accepts Minecraft: Java Edition clients. Mojang’s Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) accepts Bedrock clients on supported Windows, console, mobile and Nintendo Switch platforms. A player’s device edition therefore determines which installation path you should use.

Question Java 1-Click App Bedrock Dedicated Server
Official software DigitalOcean Marketplace image built around the official Java server software Mojang’s official Bedrock Dedicated Server
Installation Choose the image while creating a Droplet Manual installation on a supported Linux distribution
Published baseline DigitalOcean recommends 4 GB RAM and two Premium Intel cores for the best experience Mojang lists 4 GB RAM and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux
Client compatibility Java Edition clients Bedrock clients, including Windows, consoles, mobile and Nintendo Switch families
Default Java connection port 25565, subject to firewall and network configuration Use the port configured by the BDS installation; do not assume Java’s port applies
Administration DigitalOcean image plus SSH, systemd and the Minecraft console You manage the Linux service, files, updates, firewall and backups yourself

If your group includes console or mobile players, do not deploy the Java image expecting them to connect. If everyone uses Java Edition, the 1-Click App avoids much of the package installation and service wiring. If everyone uses Bedrock, install BDS instead of trying to adapt the Java image.

What the DigitalOcean Java 1-Click App actually provides

The Marketplace image creates a ready-to-run Java server on a Droplet. DigitalOcean’s published recommendation is a Droplet with 4 GB RAM and two Premium Intel cores. That is a practical starting point for a small shared world, not a guaranteed player count: simulation distance, view distance, redstone farms, exploration, plugins, mods and chunk generation can all change resource use.

The image places the installation in /opt/minecraft and registers it as a systemd service. The service is configured to use 75% of the Droplet’s RAM, leaving the remainder for the operating system and supporting processes. When the service shuts down, it saves the game world. You still own operational tasks such as applying server updates, controlling access, checking logs, arranging backups and paying for the Droplet.

Create a Java server with the 1-Click App

  1. Open the Droplet creation screen. In the DigitalOcean control panel, start a new Droplet and choose the official Minecraft: Java Edition Server 1-Click App from the Marketplace images. The documentation also describes creating the same image through DigitalOcean’s API; its example uses the s-2vcpu-4gb size.
  2. Select compute capacity. Choose at least 4 GB of RAM and two Premium Intel cores if you want the documented baseline. Add more capacity when you expect heavily modded play, many simultaneous players, long-distance exploration or intensive farms. A larger Droplet gives the JVM and operating system more headroom, but it does not remove the need to tune view and simulation distances.
  3. Choose a region near your players. Lower physical distance generally reduces latency. Keep the server and any backups in a region appropriate for your users and your data-residency requirements.
  4. Configure authentication. Prefer an SSH key over a password for administration. Record the Droplet’s public IPv4 address after deployment; players will use that address unless you later place a DNS name in front of it.
  5. Review billing options. The Droplet is a metered cloud resource. DigitalOcean states that balances accrue monthly according to resource usage and directs customers to its live pricing overview. The official reviewed material does not establish a current price for the 4 GB Premium Intel size, so check the live calculator for your chosen region, disk, backups and any additional resources before confirming.
  6. Create the Droplet and wait for initialization. World generation can take about five minutes. Do not treat a temporarily closed port during this phase as proof that deployment failed.
  7. Connect over SSH. Use the public address and the administrator account shown in the Droplet instructions. Once connected, inspect the files under /opt/minecraft, the service status and the service logs before inviting players.
  8. Allow the Java port. Java clients normally connect on TCP port 25565. Permit that port in the Droplet’s cloud firewall and in the operating system firewall if one is enabled. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where practical, while leaving the Minecraft port reachable by your intended players.
  9. Test a client connection. In Java Edition, add a multiplayer server using the Droplet’s public IPv4 address. If the server has a DNS name, use that name only after confirming that its record points to the current address.

Log in, operate the service and grant operator access

SSH is for administration; normal gameplay does not require shell access. The Marketplace image documents a Minecraft console and a systemd-managed service. Use the exact unit name and paths shown by the image documentation when starting, stopping or checking it, because service names can change between image revisions.

Check whether the server is running

From SSH, list the Minecraft-related units and inspect the active unit’s status with systemd. The status output tells you whether the process is running, restarting or failing during startup. Follow the unit’s journal when a player reports disconnects, a failed update or a missing world. Avoid killing the Java process abruptly: a clean systemd stop lets Minecraft save the world.

Promote a trusted player

Use the Minecraft server console to issue the operator command for the player’s exact in-game name. Grant operator privileges only to people who need administrative commands. Operator access can change the world, ban players and run commands, so treat it as equivalent to administrative access inside the game.

Stop safely for maintenance

Stop the systemd service through the documented unit rather than powering off the Droplet. The image saves the world when the service shuts down. Announce maintenance first, wait for the service to finish saving, then apply updates or change configuration.

Install Bedrock Dedicated Server instead

Choose this route when your players use Bedrock Edition. Mojang describes BDS as the official software for hosting a Bedrock multiplayer world. The Linux requirements published by Mojang include 4 GB RAM, broadband connectivity and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later.

  1. Deploy a supported Linux Droplet. Select Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or a later supported release and provide at least 4 GB RAM. Keep the Droplet in a region close to the players.
  2. Secure SSH before installation. Use key-based authentication, update the operating system packages, create a dedicated non-root account for the server and reserve administrative privileges for maintenance.
  3. Download BDS from Mojang’s official distribution. Accept the software license as required, place the extracted files in a dedicated directory and ensure the account running the server owns that directory. Do not mix BDS files into the Java installation under /opt/minecraft.
  4. Configure the world and access settings. Set the world name, difficulty, game mode, player limit and allow-list choices in the BDS configuration files. Keep the allow-list enabled if the world is private.
  5. Create a systemd service. Run BDS under the dedicated account, configure automatic restart only after investigating crashes, and direct logs to a location you can review. Test start, stop and restart before opening the server to players.
  6. Open the BDS listening port. Add the port selected by your BDS configuration to both the DigitalOcean cloud firewall and the Ubuntu firewall when applicable. Bedrock’s port is not interchangeable with Java’s simply because both servers run on the same Droplet type.
  7. Connect from Bedrock clients. Add the Droplet address and configured port in each client’s server list. Test one Windows, mobile or console client that your group actually uses; platform account and network policies can affect console connectivity.

How much Droplet capacity do you need?

DigitalOcean’s 4 GB/two Premium Intel core recommendation is the only capacity guidance established for the Java 1-Click experience. It should be treated as a baseline rather than a player-capacity promise. Minecraft performance is often limited by tick time and single-thread CPU performance before total RAM is exhausted, while mods and large worlds can increase both memory and storage pressure.

Situation Practical decision What to monitor
Small vanilla Java world with a few friends Start at the documented 4 GB and two Premium Intel cores Tick-time warnings, memory use and CPU saturation during exploration
Several simultaneous players or large farms Start with the baseline, then resize when monitoring shows sustained pressure Server TPS or tick duration, CPU, swap activity and disk growth
Heavy modpack or frequent chunk generation Plan extra RAM and CPU headroom rather than treating 4 GB as a fixed limit JVM pauses, out-of-memory events, chunk-generation lag and storage usage
Bedrock world Meet Mojang’s 4 GB Ubuntu 22.04-or-later requirement, then scale from observed load Process memory, CPU, network stability and world-save duration

Resize before the server begins swapping or dropping ticks. A restart is normally required for a Droplet resize, so schedule it and verify that the world has saved first. Lowering view or simulation distance can reduce load without changing Droplet size, but it changes gameplay and should be agreed with players.

Networking, firewall and connection troubleshooting

The server times out

  • Confirm that the Droplet is powered on and the Minecraft service is active.
  • Verify that players are using the current public IPv4 address, not an old address from a replaced Droplet.
  • Check the DigitalOcean cloud firewall and the operating system firewall for the configured game port.
  • Review the service journal for a bind error, failed startup or a port already in use.

SSH works but Minecraft does not

This usually means the game service is not listening or only the SSH rule was opened. Check the listening sockets and the Minecraft service status, then add the game port explicitly to every firewall layer. A successful SSH connection does not prove that the Java or Bedrock port is reachable.

Players connect but experience lag

Watch CPU, memory and disk metrics while reproducing the problem. If lag appears during new-area exploration, chunk generation may be the trigger. Reduce view or simulation distance, limit aggressive farms, pre-generate terrain where your chosen server software supports it, or resize the Droplet after confirming sustained resource pressure.

The world rolled back

Check whether the process was terminated without a clean shutdown and whether a recent backup exists. Use systemd stops for planned maintenance, allow the save to complete and test restoration on a separate directory or Droplet before replacing the live world.

Updates, backups and ongoing costs

The server software is free to download, but the virtual machine is not. DigitalOcean bills compute and related resources according to usage, with balances accruing monthly. The exact total depends on the current Droplet price for your region and size, persistent storage, snapshots or automated backups, and any other resources attached to the account. Because rates can change, use DigitalOcean’s live pricing page rather than relying on a printed figure.

Plan updates as a maintenance routine:

  • Announce a maintenance window and stop the service cleanly.
  • Back up the world directory and configuration before changing the server version.
  • Record the current version and confirm that plugins or mods support the target version.
  • Update the server files, start the service and inspect logs for migration errors.
  • Join with a test account before reopening the server to everyone.

A Droplet disk is not a backup. Keep at least one copy outside the live filesystem, protect it from accidental deletion and periodically perform a restore test. Snapshots and automated backups add cost, so include them in the monthly estimate.

Java image or manual Bedrock: which path fits?

Choose the Java 1-Click App when… Choose manual Bedrock when…
Every player uses Java Edition Players use Bedrock on consoles, phones, tablets or Windows
You want Marketplace provisioning and a documented baseline You need Mojang’s BDS software and are comfortable managing Linux services
You can use Java port 25565 and SSH for administration You can configure and document BDS’s selected listening port
You want the image’s 75%-of-RAM service allocation You want direct control over BDS files, service limits and configuration

Neither path is a managed game-hosting subscription. You remain responsible for access control, updates, firewall rules, backups, monitoring and the cloud bill. The 1-Click image reduces initial setup; it does not remove those operational duties.
