You can host a dedicated Project Zomboid server behind CGNAT or a locked-down router without creating a port-forward rule. Install the dedicated server on a computer that stays online, then place that computer and every player’s device on the same private overlay network with Tailscale or ZeroTier. Players connect to the host’s overlay IP and the server’s configured game port through Project Zomboid’s direct-connect screen.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Project Zomboid servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This approach keeps the server private rather than publicly discoverable. Every participant must install the same overlay client and be authorized on your network. If your group needs a public server browser listing, players cannot install network software, or the world must remain available around the clock, a VPS or managed game-server host is a better fit.

What “without port forwarding” actually changes
A normal home-hosted server accepts inbound traffic through your router. Port forwarding tells the router to send a selected public port to the computer running Project Zomboid. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), shared apartment internet, mobile broadband, and some ISP routers prevent that arrangement because you do not control the public address or the upstream NAT device.
An overlay network takes a different route. Tailscale or ZeroTier installs a virtual network interface on each participating device. The server and players receive private overlay addresses, and the overlay transports game traffic between those addresses. Your home router does not need a rule that exposes the game port to the public internet.

The dedicated server itself is unchanged. It still loads the world, applies server settings, authenticates players, and loads mods in the ordinary way. Only the path used to reach it is different. Because the overlay is private, the server generally will not appear in Project Zomboid’s public server browser; players use direct connect with the overlay address.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tailscale | Tailscale client on the server and every player device | Usually none | All players need the client and network authorization; relay paths can add latency | Small private groups, especially users behind CGNAT |
| ZeroTier | ZeroTier client plus membership in one private virtual network | Usually none | Members must be authorized; TCP fallback relay is slower than a direct path | Groups that prefer a virtual-LAN model |
| VPS or managed host | Server software on provider infrastructure; players need only the game | None on your home router | Recurring cost and provider administration | Public discovery, 24/7 availability, or players who cannot install an overlay client |
Tailscale is the simplest first attempt because it automatically selects a direct connection when possible and can fall back to a peer relay or DERP relay when NAT prevents a direct path. ZeroTier provides a similar private-network model and documents a TCP relay fallback when UDP traversal is blocked. In either product, a working relay is preferable to a failed connection, but an extra hop can increase latency.

Use a machine that can stay online
The host computer must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and running the dedicated server process whenever friends want to play. A desktop, spare laptop, or headless Linux machine can work. Sleep mode, aggressive power management, and automatic shutdowns are common reasons a server appears to vanish even though the overlay is configured correctly.
Install the dedicated server
On a computer with Steam, open the Steam tools list and install Project Zomboid Dedicated Server. For a headless machine, install the dedicated server with SteamCMD and follow the dedicated-server guide for that operating system. The guide covers both installation paths and the server’s normal configuration files.
Launch the server once before adding an overlay. This creates the configuration and save directories and confirms that the game build can start locally. Stop it cleanly, edit the server settings you need, and start it again before inviting anyone. Keep the server and every player on the same game build; a version mismatch can look like a networking failure when it is actually a client/server compatibility problem.
Limit the host firewall correctly
Allow the dedicated-server process to accept traffic on the private overlay interface. Do not open the game port broadly on the public internet just because an operating-system firewall wizard suggests a wide rule. The exact firewall dialog differs by Windows and Linux, but the principle is the same: permit the game process and overlay adapter, while leaving unrelated inbound services blocked.
If you already have a restrictive firewall, test the server locally first, then test through the overlay from another device. A firewall rule that permits only the physical Ethernet or Wi-Fi interface may still block the virtual Tailscale or ZeroTier adapter.

Set up Tailscale step by step
1. Install and sign in on every device
- Install Tailscale on the computer running the dedicated server.
- Install Tailscale on every computer or console-side device that will run Project Zomboid. The player needs the client on the same device from which the game connects.
- Sign each installation into the same tailnet. Use an account or organization arrangement that lets you recognize and manage all participating devices.
Do not send a friend a login credential. Add their device to the tailnet using the product’s normal invitation or approval flow, then remove access when that person should no longer reach the private network.
2. Find the server’s overlay address
Open the Tailscale device list on the account that manages the tailnet and identify the machine running the Zomboid server. Record its Tailscale IP address, not the host’s ordinary home-LAN address. The Tailscale client also exposes connection status for the selected device; this status is useful later when checking whether traffic is direct or relayed.
3. Start Project Zomboid
Start the dedicated server and wait until it has finished loading the world and is accepting connections. Keep the server console visible during the first test so you can see authentication, mod, or bind errors immediately.
4. Have a player connect directly
- On the player’s device, confirm Tailscale is connected to the same tailnet.
- Open Project Zomboid’s multiplayer direct-connect workflow rather than relying on the public server browser.
- Enter the server’s Tailscale IP address and the game port configured in the server settings.
- Supply the username, password, and any other values required by that server.
Use the overlay address exactly as shown by Tailscale. A local address such as 192.168.x.x may work only for people on the same physical home network; it is not the address to give a remote friend.
5. Check the connection path
Tailscale reports whether a peer connection is direct, using a peer relay, or using a DERP relay. Direct is the preferred path for responsiveness. A peer-relay or DERP-relay status does not mean the configuration failed: it means Tailscale could not establish the best direct route and is carrying the packets through an intermediary. Test the actual game with the whole group, because relay latency and stability depend on the locations and networks involved.
Set up ZeroTier step by step
1. Create a private network
- Create a ZeroTier network in the controller and note its network identifier.
- Install ZeroTier on the server computer and on every player device.
- Join each device to the same network identifier.
- Authorize each member in the network controller before expecting traffic to pass.
Authorization is an important difference from simply installing the client. An unapproved device may show that it joined locally while still being unable to communicate with the server.
2. Identify the server’s ZeroTier address
In the ZeroTier controller or client, locate the virtual address assigned to the dedicated-server machine. Give players that address and the configured Project Zomboid game port. Do not substitute the server’s public WAN address or a physical-LAN address.

3. Start and test the server
Start the dedicated server, verify that its firewall permits the ZeroTier adapter, and have one remote player use direct connect. Once one player succeeds, invite the rest. If a player cannot reach the server, check network authorization first, then the local firewall, then the game build and mod list.
4. Understand TCP fallback
ZeroTier can use a TCP relay when direct UDP connectivity or NAT traversal is blocked. The fallback can keep a connection alive on restrictive networks, but relayed traffic is slower than direct peer-to-peer traffic. Treat it as a compatibility path, not a performance guarantee.
Give players the information they actually need
Send one short connection note rather than asking friends to guess among several addresses. Include:
- The overlay client to install and the invitation or network-authorization step.
- The server’s overlay IP address.
- The Project Zomboid game port configured on the server.
- The server password, if one is configured.
- The required game build and exact mod collection, if the server uses mods.
Tell players to launch the overlay before opening the game. If the overlay is disconnected, Project Zomboid cannot reach the private address even though the dedicated server is running normally.
Why a connection may be direct, relayed, or unreachable
Direct paths
A direct path lets the two devices communicate without an intermediary relay. It normally provides the best performance because packets take the shortest available route between peers. Tailscale and ZeroTier attempt NAT traversal automatically; you do not manually configure a public port for this process.
Relay paths
When NAT, firewall policy, or an ISP blocks direct traversal, the overlay can relay traffic. Tailscale labels these situations as peer-relay or DERP-relay connections. ZeroTier can use its TCP fallback relay when UDP is unavailable. The server may remain completely playable, but the additional hop can increase latency or make an already marginal connection feel worse.
Blocked overlays
Some networks restrict VPN-like traffic so severely that the overlay cannot form a usable path. A school, workplace, hotel, or ISP policy may be responsible. Do not promise that every consumer VPN overlay defeats every restriction. If the overlay itself is blocked, move the dedicated server to infrastructure with a reachable network path instead of repeatedly changing game settings.

Troubleshoot in the order that saves time
The server is not visible in the browser
This is expected for a private overlay setup. Use Project Zomboid’s direct-connect screen and enter the overlay IP plus the configured port. Browser listing is a public-discovery feature and is not required for a direct connection.
Everyone gets a timeout
- Confirm the dedicated server process is running and has completed world loading.
- Verify every device is signed into the same Tailscale tailnet or authorized on the same ZeroTier network.
- Check that players are using the overlay IP, not the host’s private-LAN or public address.
- Review the host firewall and permit the game process on the virtual overlay interface.
- Confirm the port in the direct-connect form matches the server configuration.
One player can connect but another cannot
The server is probably healthy, so compare the failing player’s overlay membership, authorization, firewall, and client status with the working player. A single restrictive network can force a relay or block the overlay while everyone else connects directly.
Tailscale reports a relay
Leave the setup in place and test playability before changing anything. A relay is a functioning route, not an automatic error. If latency is unacceptable, try the player from another network, review local firewall restrictions, and check whether both endpoints can establish direct connectivity. If the group cannot obtain a stable path, a hosted server is the practical alternative.
ZeroTier falls back to TCP relay
Confirm that the player can reach the server through the fallback, then judge the result in-game. If the connection is too slow or unstable, the limitation is the network path rather than the Zomboid world configuration. A VPS or managed host avoids relying on that home-to-home traversal.

- Compare game and mod versions after every update.
Keep builds, mods, and saves synchronized
Networking cannot compensate for mismatched software. The dedicated server and all clients must use compatible Project Zomboid builds. The cited dedicated-server instructions are Build 42-oriented, so re-check the current installation and configuration guidance after a major game update rather than assuming an older layout still applies.
Mods add another layer of synchronization. Keep the server’s workshop IDs, mod IDs, load order, and versions aligned with the clients. When troubleshooting, first test a clean server with no mods. If the clean test works, reintroduce the mod set systematically; a failed mod load can prevent a player from joining even when the overlay path is perfect.
Back up the world and configuration before changing builds or mod collections. Stop the server cleanly before copying save files, and document which build and mod set produced each backup so that a rollback is usable.

Security and privacy considerations
An overlay server is private by membership, not automatically safe by default. Only authorize people you trust, use a strong in-game password, and remove devices that no longer need access. A player who remains in the tailnet or ZeroTier network may be able to reach other services that you accidentally expose on the host, so keep unrelated services firewalled.
Do not disable the host firewall globally to solve a connection problem. Create the narrowest rule that permits the dedicated server through the overlay adapter. Avoid exposing remote desktop, file shares, or administration panels to the overlay unless you deliberately need them and have secured them.
Keep the operating system, overlay client, Steam components, and Project Zomboid server updated. Updates can change network behavior or configuration paths, but postponing security fixes indefinitely creates a larger risk than rechecking the setup after an update.
When a VPS or managed host is the better answer
Move the server off your home connection when the group’s requirements exceed a private overlay. A VPS or managed game-server provider is appropriate when:
- Players cannot install or authorize Tailscale or ZeroTier.
- You need the server to be discoverable through public listings.
- The world must remain online while your home computer is off.
- Your ISP blocks overlay traffic or your connection is too unstable for hosting.
- You need a predictable public endpoint for a larger or changing community.
The trade-off is recurring cost and administration. You must secure the hosted machine, install the dedicated server there, manage backups, and follow the provider’s resource and network policies. For a small group that already trusts one another and can install an overlay client, home hosting usually involves less ongoing administration.
A repeatable operating checklist
- Install the Project Zomboid Dedicated Server through Steam tools or SteamCMD.
- Start it once, create the world, and confirm the server runs before networking changes.
- Install Tailscale or ZeroTier on the server and every player device.
- Put every device in the same tailnet or authorize every member on one ZeroTier network.
- Allow the game process through the host firewall on the overlay interface.
- Record the server’s overlay IP and configured game port.
- Start the server and wait for world loading to finish.
- Have one player connect through direct connect, then add the rest.
- Check whether the overlay path is direct or relayed and test actual gameplay.
- Keep builds, mods, backups, and server configuration synchronized after updates.
This procedure avoids router port forwarding while preserving the normal dedicated-server workflow. The overlay supplies reachability; Project Zomboid continues to handle the game world and player sessions.
