How to Host a Shivrs’ Ascendency Modpack Server

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host Shivrs’ Ascendency reliably, use the official AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, run it on Java 21, begin with roughly 6–8 GB of allocated memory, and make every client use the identical pack release. The setup is straightforward once the versions match, but this is an Extra Large pack with hundreds of mods, custom datapacks and resourcepacks, so startup time, memory use and update discipline matter.

Lock the versions before downloading

The official CurseForge project currently lists Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge. Its latest listed release is Shivrs’ Ascendency-v0.6.1.zip, dated January 17, 2026. The matching server download is listed under Minecraft 1.21 Server Packs as AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip. Record all three values before you download anything:

  • Minecraft: 1.21.1
  • Mod loader: NeoForge
  • Pack release: Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1

Do not use the client ZIP as the server installation, and do not combine a v0.6.1 server pack with a different client release. A modded server can start with the wrong files and then fail when a player joins, or it can generate a world that is difficult to recover after you correct the mismatch.

Download and unpack the official server pack

The project owner identifies the official CurseForge page as the current official Ascendency page and asks users not to redistribute the pack to other platforms. Download the server pack from that official files listing rather than from an unofficial mirror.

  1. Create a new, dedicated directory for the server. Keep it separate from your client instance and from any older Minecraft server.
  2. Download AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip from the Minecraft 1.21 Server Packs section.
  3. Extract the ZIP directly into the new server directory. The supplied startup scripts, libraries, configuration files and pack data should remain together.
  4. Keep the original ZIP outside the live directory as a version record. It is useful when you need to rebuild the server or compare an update.
  5. Before starting, check that the extracted files are in the directory from which you intend to run the server, rather than inside an accidental second nested folder.

Use a directory with sufficient free disk space for the initial installation, generated world and backups. The pack is marked Extra Large and the author describes hundreds of mods, custom datapacks and resourcepacks, so a tiny temporary folder is a poor long-term location.

Install and select Java 21

A setup reference for the 1.21.1 server identifies Java 21. Install a 64-bit Java 21 runtime and make sure the server launch script actually calls that installation; having Java 21 installed is not enough if your operating system still resolves java to another version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Java version

Open a terminal or command prompt and run:

java -version

The output should identify Java 21. If it reports another major version, either correct your operating system PATH or edit the supplied startup script so its Java command points to the Java 21 executable. Keep the executable path free of accidental quotation or spacing errors, especially on Windows.

When several Java installations exist

  • Check the Java version from the same account that will run the server.
  • Check the script itself rather than assuming it inherits the terminal’s PATH.
  • Restart the terminal after changing environment variables.
  • Do not remove another Java installation until you have confirmed that unrelated software does not depend on it.

Java-version errors commonly appear as an immediate process exit, a message that the class file is unsupported, or a launch script that flashes and closes. Correct the executable selection first; changing memory or mod files will not fix a Java mismatch.

Complete the first boot and accept the EULA

The server pack supplies startup scripts for Windows and Linux. Run the script for your operating system from the extracted server directory. The first launch normally creates the EULA file and initial configuration files before stopping.

  1. Run the supplied Windows or Linux startup script once.
  2. Open the generated EULA file and read the agreement.
  3. If you agree, change the setting to eula=true and save the file.
  4. Run the same startup script again.
  5. Watch the console until the server finishes loading or displays a specific error. Do not close the window while files are still being generated.

If the process keeps stopping with the EULA message, check that you edited the EULA file in the active server directory and that the file was saved as plain text. If the script appears to do nothing, launch it from a terminal so its error output remains visible instead of relying on a double-click window.

Configure the world and access settings

Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Open server.properties in a text editor and change only the values you understand. At minimum, decide the following:

  • Level name: the world directory name. Set this before generating a new world; changing it later can make the server appear to have lost the original world.
  • Difficulty: choose the difficulty that fits your group before players begin progressing.
  • View distance: controls how much terrain players receive around themselves and can materially affect server workload.
  • Simulation distance: controls how far game logic continues to run and can affect tick performance.
  • Whitelist: enable it for a private server and add players deliberately rather than exposing an open world.
  • Server port: keep the configured TCP port documented because the same value is needed for firewall and router rules.

Make a backup of server.properties, the world directory and important mod configuration before changing world or gameplay settings. A simple dated copy lets you undo an experiment without rebuilding the entire installation.

Choose memory and watch performance

Shivrs’ Ascendency is marked Extra Large and includes hundreds of mods, extensive custom datapacks and resourcepacks, balance changes, Create integration, new accessories and weapons, skill upgrades, travel options, backpacks and a custom boss system. Those features are why the server can take longer to start and why memory use should be observed rather than guessed.

A current modpack-hosting guide cites 6–8 GB of RAM as a practical starting range. That is operational guidance, not a measured minimum or a promise of a particular player count. Begin in that range if your machine can provide it, then adjust after observing real startup and gameplay with your expected number of players.

What to monitor

  • How long the first boot and later restarts take.
  • Whether the Java process approaches its memory limit during loading or exploration.
  • Tick responsiveness when several players are moving, generating terrain or using machines.
  • Whether the operating system begins swapping or becomes unresponsive.
  • How memory use changes as the world grows and more chunks are explored.

Allocating more memory does not automatically solve every lag problem. A server can still suffer from CPU saturation, heavy world generation, a faulty mod or an unsuitable view or simulation distance. Change one setting at a time and keep a record of the previous value so you can identify which change helped.

Apply JVM arguments cautiously

The author publishes recommended JVM arguments including -XX:+UseZGC, -XX:+ZGenerational, -XX:+AlwaysPreTouch and parallel-reference-processing flags. Add these only when the installed Java build supports them and only in the script’s existing Java-options section. Do not replace the entire launch command blindly.

  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

A safe approach is to preserve a plain fallback command before experimenting:

-XX:+UseZGC -XX:+ZGenerational -XX:+AlwaysPreTouch

Keep the remaining recommended flags exactly as published in the pack’s documentation or startup configuration. If the server stops immediately after an argument change, remove the new options and run the fallback command. That separates an unsupported JVM flag from a mod, world or networking problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy arguments intended for a different Minecraft version, Java major version or hardware profile. The relevant Java version for this setup is 21, and the server’s successful boot is the first test that an argument set is usable.

Make a home-hosted server reachable

For a server running at home, two network controls must agree: the operating-system firewall and the router’s port-forwarding rule.

  1. Allow the Java server process through the operating-system firewall when prompted, or create a rule for the TCP port configured in server.properties.
  2. Give the server computer a stable local address so the router rule does not point to a different device after a lease change.
  3. Forward the same configured TCP port from the router to the server computer’s local address.
  4. Start the server and verify that it is listening before testing from the internet.
  5. Ask a player outside your home network to connect, or use another external connection. Testing from the same LAN can succeed even when the public route is misconfigured.
  6. Share the public address only after the external test works. Keep the whitelist enabled for a private group.

If outside players cannot connect

  • Connection refused: confirm the server is running and that the router forwards the exact port shown in server.properties.
  • Timeout: inspect both the operating-system firewall and router rule, then repeat the test from outside the LAN.
  • It works locally but not publicly: the local server is probably healthy; focus on forwarding, the public address and any restrictions imposed by the internet service.
  • The address changes: update the address shared with players and consider a stable naming solution supported by your network provider.

Match every client to the server

Each player must install the same Shivrs’ Ascendency release, Minecraft version and NeoForge version in their launcher. For this release, that means v0.6.1, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge. The server pack and client pack must represent the same release; a player who installs a newer or older file should change their instance before connecting.

Have players close the game before replacing an instance, then launch once with the intended profile so its files finish installing. When a connection fails, capture the exact client and server log messages rather than repeatedly reinstalling. A missing-mod or mismatched-version message points to the client instance, while a server crash during startup points to the server files, Java selection or JVM options.

Operate the world safely

Back up before maintenance

Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. Back up the world directory, server.properties, mod configuration and any other files the pack creates. A backup made while files are still being written can be incomplete and may not restore cleanly.

Use a whitelist for private play

Enable the whitelist before publishing the address and add only the players who should join. This is especially important for a long-running world with custom progression, equipment and boss content.

Stage updates on a copy

When a new pack release appears, duplicate the live server directory and test the update against the copy first. Confirm that the new server pack, Minecraft version, NeoForge version and client instance all agree. Keep the original world untouched until the updated copy starts, loads the world and accepts a test connection.

Do not assume that a release update is reversible. Preserve the pre-update backup and document the old filename, version and configuration so you can restore the previous installation if the new one causes a crash or world problem.

Self-hosting versus a managed server

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, networking and update timing. A managed host trades some of that control for a control panel, infrastructure and advertised installation or support. Providers advertising this pack may offer installation, updates, testing or fixes, and some advertise a preconfigured Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge server. Verify the exact current release before paying.

Decision point Self-hosting Managed hosting
Upfront and recurring cost Uses your own computer, internet connection and power; expenses depend on hardware and usage. Uses a recurring hosting plan; pricing and included resources vary by provider.
RAM and CPU You choose and monitor the machine’s available resources. The plan determines the allocated resources; confirm that it can provide the pack’s starting memory range.
Networking You configure the firewall, router forwarding and public address. The provider supplies the network endpoint, while you still need to verify the exact server configuration.
Backups and restore You create, schedule and test your own copies. Ask exactly which backup and restore tools are included before purchase.
Updates You control timing and can stage every update on a copy. Some providers advertise installation, testing or update assistance; confirm whether you retain file access and rollback control.
Console and files You have direct operating-system and file access. Access depends on the provider’s panel and plan.
Support You diagnose Java, mods, performance and networking yourself. Support responsiveness and the scope of modpack troubleshooting vary by provider.
Compatibility You select the exact 1.21.1, NeoForge and v0.6.1 files. Confirm that the provider supports the exact NeoForge release and server-pack filename you intend to run.

Before choosing a managed plan, ask for the supported Shivrs’ Ascendency release, region, RAM and CPU allocation, backup schedule, restore process, console and file access, update policy, support scope and licensing position. A preconfigured listing is useful only if it matches the release your players install.

Troubleshooting checklist

The script exits immediately

Run it from a terminal and read the error. Verify Java 21 first, then undo any recently added JVM arguments. If the error references a missing file, confirm that the ZIP was extracted into the directory used by the script and that you did not leave files inside a nested folder.

The server stops at the EULA check

Set eula=true only after reading the agreement, save the file in the active server directory, and run the supplied script again. A second EULA file elsewhere will not affect the process you are launching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players receive a version or missing-mod error

Compare the server’s v0.6.1, Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge values with the player’s launcher profile. Replace the mismatched client instance with the matching release instead of copying random mods into it.

The server runs out of memory or becomes slow

Start by confirming the allocated memory and observing when pressure occurs. Reduce view or simulation distance if those settings are excessive for the hardware, stop unnecessary applications, and test the world with the expected player activity. Increase memory only when the machine has headroom; do not treat a larger allocation as proof that the underlying issue is fixed.

The world will not load after an update

Stop the test server, restore the pre-update copy and confirm that the client and server files belong to the same release. Never overwrite the only copy of a long-running world while diagnosing an update.

What to expect from the pack

The author describes Ascendency as having started as a small pack for a two-week Minecraft phase and growing into a large adventure built around fun and custom content. In practical hosting terms, that means more than a basic collection of mods: players can encounter a custom boss log, balance and mod changes, Create integration, additional accessories and weapons, skill upgrades, travel systems, backpacks and extensive datapack and resourcepack content. Those systems reward a persistent multiplayer world, but they also make conservative backups, matching clients and monitored performance essential.
