What the Slow Zombies pack is
The project is listed on CurseForge as Mustard Virus by Forge Labs, a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack built for Forge. Its infected mobs are described as being attracted to light, sound, and players, which makes lighting, noise, and base location meaningful survival concerns rather than cosmetic details.
CurseForge recorded 4,688,586 project downloads in 2021. The latest release listed for the project is Mustard Virus 2.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2, dated 31 October 2021. The dedicated slow-zombie server archive is named Minecraft+Zombie+Server.zip; it supports 1.12.2, is listed at 139.0 MB, and was uploaded on 23 March 2021.

Those dates matter because this is not a current Minecraft release. Newer Java versions, loaders, client packs, or server jars can break a 1.12.2 installation. Treat the Minecraft version, Forge version, and modpack release as one compatibility set.

For a small group with a spare computer and someone comfortable with configuration files, self-hosting gives the most control. A managed plan is simpler when the server must be online while the owner is away or when nobody wants to maintain router rules and Java installations.

Requirements for a self-hosted server
- A computer that can remain online while friends play, with enough free memory for Minecraft, Forge, the modpack, the operating system, and other applications you intend to run.
- A Java 8-compatible runtime. Forge’s 1.12.x documentation states that Minecraft and Forge compile against Java 8; use a Java 8-compatible runtime rather than assuming the newest Java release will work.
- The matching
Minecraft+Zombie+Server.ziparchive for the same pack release used by the clients. - A separate, writable server directory. Keeping this installation away from other Minecraft servers prevents mixed mods, libraries, worlds, and launch scripts.
- Permission to change the operating-system firewall and, for Internet play, the router’s port-forwarding rules.
- A backup destination with enough space for the world and configuration files.
Self-hosting: complete setup procedure
1. Make a dedicated server directory
Create a new folder used only for this instance. Do not extract the pack over another Forge or vanilla server. A separate directory makes it easier to identify the correct logs, back up the world, and remove the installation without affecting another game.
2. Install and verify Java 8 compatibility
Install a Java 8-compatible runtime on the computer that will run the server. Confirm that the operating system and the launch script use that runtime, especially if several Java versions are installed. A server that silently starts with an incompatible Java executable can stop before Forge loads or fail while reading older libraries.

3. Download the matching server archive
Obtain the slow-zombie server archive from the project’s CurseForge files and place it in the dedicated directory. The archive is listed as 139.0 MB and supports Minecraft 1.12.2. Keep the server archive’s release aligned with the client pack; do not combine files from different Mustard Virus releases.
Extract the complete archive, including its Forge files, mods, configuration, libraries, and launch files. Do not copy only a vanilla Minecraft server JAR into the folder. The modpack’s behavior depends on the complete Forge server installation.
4. Start the Forge server once
Run the Forge server entry point or the launch script supplied with the archive from inside the server directory. The first run normally creates the initial files and then stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. If the process remains open, watch the console for the line indicating that startup is complete or for a Java, library, or missing-file error.
5. Accept the EULA
Open the generated eula.txt in the server directory. Change eula=false to eula=true, save the file, and run the same Forge launch entry point again. Minecraft Help and Forge documentation both describe this first-run shutdown; changing the file is required before the server will continue starting.

6. Configure server.properties
Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Open server.properties and set the values that match your group:
- World name: choose the world folder name you want the server to create or load.
- Difficulty: select the survival challenge appropriate for your players.
- Player-versus-player: enable or disable PvP according to the group’s rules.
- Maximum players: set a limit your computer and connection can handle.
- Server port: keep the configured value in mind; the default Java server port is 25565.
- Other gameplay and view settings: adjust them conservatively, because larger view distance and entity loads increase server work.
Back up the world and configuration before changing world-generation or mod settings. A change that is harmless to a new world can make an established world difficult to load or undo.

Use the normal Forge launch script supplied with the server pack. If that script supports the nogui option, use it on a computer where you want the console only. The console is the authoritative place to watch Forge loading, mod initialization, player connections, warnings, and shutdown errors. Keep it visible during the first successful start.
8. Test from the host computer
Launch the matching client and connect to localhost. This test avoids the router and Internet entirely. Confirm that the world opens, the expected mods load, and the player can move through the game before attempting remote connections.

9. Test on the local network
From another device on the same home network, connect using the host computer’s local address. A successful LAN connection proves that the server is listening and that local firewall rules permit the traffic. If localhost works but the LAN test fails, investigate the operating-system firewall or the local address before changing router settings.
Let friends connect over the Internet
Allow Java through the firewall
Create an operating-system firewall rule that permits the Java runtime used by the Forge server. If the operating system asks whether to allow Java on private or public networks, choose the profile that matches your network and avoid exposing unrelated Java programs.
Forward the server port
Internet players cannot normally reach a computer behind a home router until the router forwards the port shown in server.properties to the host computer’s local address. Java servers commonly use port 25565 by default. The exact menu names and fields differ by router manufacturer, so follow the current manual for your model.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using your router’s address-reservation feature if available.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for the port configured in
server.properties. - Point that rule to the server computer’s local address and the correct transport protocol requested by the router’s Minecraft or Java-server instructions.
- Confirm that the operating-system firewall allows the same traffic.
- Test from a connection outside your home network, such as a friend’s Internet connection or a mobile hotspot.
LAN players use the host’s local address. Internet players use the reachable public address and the forwarded port. Give the address only to people you trust, and do not publish it in an open forum.

Keeping the server reliable
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly and copy the world folder, server.properties, eula.txt, the mod configuration, and any provider-specific settings to a separate location. Keep more than one restore point so a newly created backup does not overwrite the only usable copy.
Keep versions fixed for the group
Record the Minecraft version, Forge version, and Mustard Virus release in the server’s notes. When a player reports a mismatch, compare those three values before reinstalling anything. Updating only the client or only the server is a common way to create a join failure.
Watch resource usage during real play
Test with the number of players you actually expect rather than relying on a solo launch. If performance degrades, lower view distance and entity load first, then review memory and other applications. A larger allocation does not repair a missing mod, a bad Java runtime, or a network problem.
Protect the address and administration tools
Share the connection address privately, use a strong operating-system account, and avoid granting console or file access to players who do not need it. Keep the server console available to the operator so shutdowns and Forge errors are visible.
