What SteamCMD does—and what it does not do
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line client for downloading and updating dedicated-server files. It supplies the files; it does not replace the game’s server executable, create a universal configuration format, or automatically make every server reachable from the internet.

After SteamCMD completes, you still need to follow the target game’s server documentation. That documentation determines which executable or launch script to run, which startup arguments and configuration files to use, how to set the server name and player limit, which ports to allow, and whether the server needs a separate identity credential for public or ranked play.
The process therefore has two distinct parts:
- File deployment: SteamCMD installs and updates the dedicated-server package.
- Game operation: the game’s own executable, settings, networking rules and optional tokens run the server.
What you need before installing
- A computer, virtual private server or other host that can remain online while players connect.
- The SteamCMD build for your host operating system.
- A dedicated directory with enough storage for the game files, updates, logs and configuration.
- The exact dedicated-server app ID from the game’s official server documentation.
- The game’s documented executable name, launch arguments, configuration location and required ports.
- Administrative access to the host firewall and, for a home connection, the router.
Do not assume that the game’s normal client app ID is also its server app ID. Many titles publish a separate dedicated-server tool, and some expose beta or testing branches. A title can also require an owned license or an authenticated Steam account instead of anonymous access. Confirm these requirements before copying a command.

Install SteamCMD and make a dedicated server folder
Choose a clean install location
Create a directory used only for the server files. Keeping it separate from the SteamCMD program directory makes backups, permissions, updates and container mounts easier to manage. Use a path without spaces if the game’s startup scripts are known to handle simple paths more reliably; otherwise quote the path in your shell.
Do not install the server into a personal desktop game-library folder unless the game’s documentation explicitly tells you to. A dedicated location prevents client updates or user files from being mixed with server files.

Install the SteamCMD package for your operating system
Download and extract the SteamCMD package appropriate for the host operating system, then run the SteamCMD executable once so it can create its own supporting files and update itself. The exact archive and package steps differ by operating system, so use the installation procedure maintained for your platform and the game you are deploying.
Run the first setup from an account that has permission to write to both the SteamCMD directory and the server directory. On a managed host, give the service account ownership of the server folder rather than running every later launch as a system administrator.
Find the correct dedicated-server app ID
The app ID is the number SteamCMD passes to app_update. Get it from the game’s dedicated-server documentation, not from a search result for the regular client. Check all of the following before installing:
- Whether the title publishes a dedicated-server app at all.
- Whether the server is distributed under a separate app ID.
- Whether a beta, staging or legacy branch must be selected.
- Whether the package requires an owned license or an authenticated account.
- Whether the title uses a different tool instead of SteamCMD.
If the wrong ID is used, SteamCMD can still complete successfully while placing unrelated files in your folder. The resulting executable will not be the server you intended to run.

From a shell in the directory containing SteamCMD, run this pattern with your real server path and app ID:

Replace the angle-bracket placeholders; do not type the brackets themselves. If your shell treats spaces or special characters in the directory as separators, quote the path according to that shell’s rules.
Interactive installation
You can enter the same workflow inside the SteamCMD prompt instead of using one command:
force_install_dir <install_dir>
login anonymous
app_update <appid> validate
quitInteractive mode is useful when you need to inspect an error between steps, select a branch, or retry authentication without rebuilding a script.

Use login anonymous only when the title permits it. Some games and private branches require a Steam account with the necessary entitlement. If authenticated access is required, log in interactively or through a protected secret mechanism provided by your host; never place a Steam password in a shared script, a public repository or a log file.
A successful login does not guarantee that the account may download every branch. Entitlements and branch permissions are controlled by the game’s publisher and Steam configuration.
Locate and launch the game server
Find the title-specific executable
After SteamCMD exits, inspect the install directory and follow the game’s server guide to identify the executable or launch script. Names and locations are title-specific, so there is no universal command that starts every Steam server.
Keep the launch command in a separate script or service definition. That makes the server’s settings auditable and lets you restart it consistently after updates.

Apply the game’s configuration
Use the title’s documented method to set:
- Server name, region or visibility.
- Maximum players and any reserved slots.
- Password or access-control settings.
- World, map, scenario or game-mode selection.
- Administrative users and moderation controls.
- Mods, workshop content or plug-ins, if that title supports them.
Some games read a configuration file; others require launch arguments, a console command, or a combination. Do not copy settings from another title merely because both use SteamCMD.
Provide a server identity token when required
Public or ranked modes may require a game-server login token or another title-specific credential in addition to SteamCMD authentication. For example, Garry’s Mod documents the launch command sv_setsteamaccount <your token> for its server path. Generate and protect such credentials according to that game’s documentation, and keep them out of public scripts and screenshots.
Make the server reachable
Configure the host firewall
Allow the ports documented by the game through the operating system’s firewall. A server process can be running normally while the firewall silently blocks incoming or outgoing traffic. Permit only the protocols and ports the title specifies, and avoid opening unrelated services.
Configure a home router when self-hosting
For a server behind a home router, forward the game’s documented ports to the host computer’s local address. Reserve that address in the router or configure an equivalent stable assignment so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.

Test from outside the local network where possible. A successful connection from the host itself proves only that the process is listening locally; it does not prove that friends on the internet can reach it.
Match the game’s networking mode
Some titles use separate query, gameplay, voice or administrative ports. Use the complete port list from the title’s server documentation, including protocol information. Public and ranked modes can impose additional identity or listing requirements beyond ordinary LAN play.
Verify the first launch
- Start the server with the documented executable and settings.
- Watch the console or log for a ready message, bind error, missing-file error or authentication failure.
- Connect from the same machine if the game supports local testing.
- Connect from another device on the local network.
- Test an external connection using the game’s normal server browser or direct-connect method.
- Confirm that the displayed name, player limit, password, map and version match your configuration.
Stop the process cleanly after testing so the game can save its world and configuration. A forced power-off can leave files in an incomplete state even when SteamCMD itself is healthy.

Update a Steam server safely
SteamCMD updates an installed package when you rerun app_update. Stop the running game server first, then execute:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <install_dir> +login anonymous +app_update <appid> +quitUse the same authenticated login method and branch selection that the original installation requires. Start the server again only after SteamCMD reports completion. Players may be unable to connect while the server and their game clients are on different versions.
When to add validation
Add validate when installing initially, after a suspected file problem, or when the game documentation recommends it:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <install_dir> +login anonymous +app_update <appid> validate +quitValidation checks the complete installation and can take longer than a normal update. It may redownload files that differ from the package, so schedule it during maintenance rather than treating it as a fast restart step.
Preserve configuration and saves
Before an update, back up the game’s documented configuration, save data and mod list. SteamCMD manages the application files; it does not define how a title stores worlds, bans, administrator lists or custom settings. Keep those user-created files outside disposable container layers or include them in your backup plan.
Automate restarts and updates
A simple maintenance script can stop the server, run app_update, optionally run validate, and start the server again. Add logging and an explicit failure check so a download error does not result in a restart of a half-updated installation.
Schedule updates deliberately rather than running them while players are active. Announce downtime, retain the previous configuration, and verify that the server reaches its ready state after the restart.

Automation should keep credentials private, use a fixed install path, and record which app ID and branch were installed. If a game changes its launch arguments or token requirements, update the service definition instead of assuming the old command remains valid.
Using Docker or another container
Containerized deployment is an optional automation layer, not a requirement for SteamCMD. A container can run SteamCMD with force_install_dir, login, app_update, optional validate and quit, then launch the game server.
Mount persistent host storage for the install directory and the game’s saves and configuration. Without persistent storage, replacing the container can delete the server files and player data, forcing a fresh download or restore.
Containers add operational decisions: image maintenance, volume permissions, port publishing, log collection, secret handling and restart policy. Use native installation first when you are learning a title’s server requirements; choose a container when repeatable deployment or orchestration justifies the extra layer.
Choosing where to host
The same SteamCMD workflow can run on a home computer, a VPS or a managed game-server service. The right choice depends less on SteamCMD than on networking, reliability and how much administration you want to perform.

For a small private group, existing hardware may be sufficient if the connection and uptime are acceptable. A VPS removes home-router forwarding and lets you choose a nearby region, but you remain responsible for operating-system and server maintenance. Managed hosting trades some control for a simpler control panel and support model; verify its mod, backup, update and port capabilities for the exact game.
Troubleshooting common failures

Security and reliability checklist
- Use a dedicated server account with only the permissions it needs.
- Keep Steam passwords and game-server tokens out of public scripts, repositories and screenshots.
- Open only the ports documented by the game.
- Back up saves, configuration, administrator lists and ban data separately from SteamCMD-managed files.
- Stop the server cleanly before updates and before copying live data.
- Record the app ID, branch, install path and launch arguments so another administrator can recover the service.
- Test a restore, not just a backup, before you rely on it for a long-running world.
- Review the game’s documentation after major updates because executable names, arguments, tokens and port requirements can change.
The repeatable SteamCMD workflow
- Identify the exact game, operating system and dedicated-server app ID.
- Create a dedicated server directory and install SteamCMD for the host platform.
- Run
force_install_dir, the permittedloginmethod,app_update, optionalvalidateandquit. - Locate the title-specific executable or launch script.
- Apply the game’s configuration, launch arguments, password and player settings.
- Add any required game-server identity token, protecting it as a secret.
- Allow the documented ports through the host firewall and router if applicable.

- For maintenance, stop the server, rerun
app_update, validate only when needed, and restart.
SteamCMD makes downloading and updating repeatable, but the game’s dedicated-server documentation remains the authority for everything after the files arrive. Treat the app ID, branch, executable, ports and credentials as title-specific settings, and your installation can be reproduced on a home host, VPS or container without mixing SteamCMD’s job with the game server’s job.
