Extract the matching server-pack release on a Java-capable machine or managed host, run Forge once to create the files, accept the EULA, configure access, and install that identical modpack release on every client. Keep Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, the pack version and any TaCZ add-ons synchronized, and make a tested backup before every update.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The current CurseForge release identified for this pack is The Last War – MC 1.20.1 – 57.2.0, uploaded September 6, 2026. Memory guidance differs by project page: Modrinth says at least 7 GB, while the CurseForge description recommends a minimum of 10 GB and more for larger player counts. For a new server, 10 GB is the safer starting allocation; measure actual usage before changing it.

What you need before starting
Prepare the following before installing anything:
- A server running Minecraft Java Edition files, not Bedrock Edition.
- The matching The Last War server-pack archive for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- A Java runtime supported by the pack and your selected Forge installer. Use the runtime version specified by the current pack or host documentation rather than assuming that every Java release works.
- At least 10 GB of memory allocated to the server as a conservative starting point. The project’s Modrinth page names 7 GB as a minimum, but its CurseForge page recommends 10 GB.
- Enough disk space for the extracted pack, libraries, logs, backups and the growing world save.
- A way for players to reach the machine: a local network for testing, or a configured public connection for remote friends.
The server pack is the important download. A normal client profile may omit files needed by a dedicated server, and a server created from arbitrary individual mods can produce missing-content or loader mismatches.
Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Both approaches can run the pack. The practical difference is who maintains the Java process, network access and backups.

| Decision point | Self-hosted PC or rented virtual machine | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Existing hardware may avoid a new hosting bill; electricity, storage and network service remain your responsibility. | Recurring provider charge; no current official price listing was published. |
| Setup time | You install Java, Forge, the server pack and any operating-system service yourself. | A control panel can automate the Java process and modpack import. |
| Router access | Usually required when friends connect to a home server from outside your network. | Normally handled by the provider; you use the assigned address and port. |
| RAM control | You choose the machine and can change the allocation directly, subject to available memory. | You select a plan or allocation and may need to change plans for more players. |
| Backups | You must schedule, store and test them. | Panel backups may be available, but retention and restore behavior must be checked with the provider. |
| Modpack import | Full control, but every file and loader setting is your job. | Some panels provide a modpack browser or installer. Mado Hosting documents an install flow for “The Last War – Guns And Adventure.” |
| Release pinning | You can keep a specific Forge 1.20.1 and pack release if you retain the files. | Confirm that the panel lets you select the exact pack release rather than silently updating. |
| Troubleshooting | You inspect logs, Java, the operating system and the network. | The host handles infrastructure, but mod and client compatibility still belongs to you. |
The project author says the pack works with BisectHosting and provides a 25% code, but also cautions that a self-hosted setup or an unlisted host may not work. That is the author’s opinion, not a guarantee of current compatibility. Verify the host’s present Forge 1.20.1 and pack support before paying.
Install the server pack on your own machine
1. Create an isolated server directory
Make a new directory used only for this server, such as a folder named for the pack and release. Do not extract over an existing world or another modpack. Keeping each installation separate makes it possible to test a new release beside the old one and roll back safely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Download and extract the matching archive
- Open the CurseForge project and choose the server-pack download for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
- Confirm that the release is the one you intend to run. The current release named by the project is 57.2.0.
- Extract every file into the new server directory. A partially extracted archive can leave missing libraries or scripts that look like Java errors later.
Do not mix files from different releases. If you are testing an update, use a second directory and a copy of the world.
3. Run Forge once to generate the server files
Launch the Forge server using the script or launcher included by the extracted pack. Forge distributions commonly provide a generated Windows batch file and Unix-like shell script, but the exact file name depends on the pack and installer. If you launch manually, use the Java executable and Forge server launcher supplied by that installation; do not copy a command from a different Forge build and assume it is universal.

A typical manual pattern is shown below as a pattern, not a guaranteed filename:
java -Xms10G -Xmx10G -jar forge-server-launcher.jar nogui
Replace the launcher name only with the actual Forge launcher in your directory. On a managed panel, select the pack’s Forge installation instead of entering a local command. The first run normally stops after creating configuration files and an EULA file.

Stop the process completely, open the generated eula.txt, read Mojang’s terms, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree. Save the file, then start the generated Forge script again. Never edit the EULA while the server is running.
5. Configure the server before inviting anyone
- Open
server.propertiesafter the second start has generated it. - Set a strong private whitelist if the server is for known players. Add players through the server console or the administration method provided by your host.
- Review the configured TCP listening port. If it is not reachable from outside your home, forward that same port to the server machine in your router and allow the Java process through the operating system firewall.
- Set view distance and simulation distance conservatively for the first test. Lower values reduce the amount of world data and entity simulation the server must process; increase them only after observing stable tick performance.
- Set an administrator operator only for accounts you trust. Do not publish operator credentials in chat or screenshots.
Test locally first. A player on the same network can confirm that Forge loads and the world opens before you troubleshoot router or firewall issues.

Install the identical pack on every client
Each player needs the client version that corresponds exactly to the server. Use CurseForge or another distribution path supported by the project to install The Last War for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. Select the same release number used by the server, not merely a profile with the same name.
- Minecraft must be 1.20.1 on both sides.
- The Forge loader build must match the server’s expected build.
- The modpack release must match, including configuration and script files.
- TaCZ and any additional gun, content or optimization mods must be the versions included by that release.
- Do not add client-only or server-only mods casually; a mod can be valid in single-player and still prevent a dedicated client from joining.
After launching the client once, check its profile or instance log if the game reports a missing mod. Compare the mod list and versions with the server rather than repeatedly trying to connect.

Start with the conservative allocation
The Modrinth project page names 7 GB RAM as a minimum and identifies low memory as a common cause of loading or FPS problems. The current CurseForge description recommends 10 GB RAM minimum and says to increase it for larger player counts. These are project-page recommendations, not a measured guarantee for every machine.
Allocate about 10 GB to begin when the host has enough physical memory left for the operating system. Do not give the Java process all available RAM: the operating system, filesystem cache and any control panel also need headroom. If the host has less than the recommended amount, expect longer loading, stalls or crashes rather than trying to compensate with an arbitrary maximum heap.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Change one variable at a time
- Watch the server console and logs during startup and when several players explore new terrain.
- If the process runs out of memory or repeatedly stalls during loading, move toward the 10 GB recommendation before adding mods.
- Lower view distance and simulation distance if tick time rises during exploration or combat.
- Increase memory only when the machine has unused physical RAM; an oversized heap can increase garbage-collection pauses instead of fixing them.
- Raise the allocation or select a larger plan for a consistently larger player count rather than relying on a one-time startup test.
TaCZ combat can add entities, projectiles and effects, but no player-count benchmark is published for the pack. Treat actual console behavior and measured tick performance as the deciding evidence.

Use a managed host
Mado Hosting’s documented import flow
Mado Hosting documents a panel-based method: open its modpack browser, search for The Last War – Guns And Adventure, and click Install. The panel then handles the server files and process in its environment. You still need to select or confirm the correct Forge loader and Minecraft 1.20.1 version.
Any added mod must use the same Forge loader and Minecraft 1.20.1 version as the pack. A one-click installer does not make an incompatible add-on safe. Before adding anything, create a host backup and verify that the panel can restore it.
Questions to ask before purchasing
- Can the panel install or import the exact CurseForge release 57.2.0, or only the latest release?
- Can you pin Minecraft 1.20.1 and the required Forge build?
- How much RAM is actually assigned to Java, and can it be increased for more players?
- Are automated backups included, how many are retained, and can you download one?
- Can you upload the official server pack if the browser listing is stale?
- Can support inspect a Forge crash log, or does support stop at network and billing issues?
Provider claims and discount codes change. Confirm these points on the host’s current documentation before committing a world to it.

Backups and safe updates
Make a restorable backup
- Tell players to stop and save, then stop the server cleanly from the console or panel.
- Copy or snapshot the complete world directory, not only a single region file. Include the server configuration and any host-specific backup metadata you need to restore the instance.
- Store at least one copy outside the live server directory. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure or an accidental deletion.
- Restore the copy to a separate test directory and launch it with the same release to prove that the archive is usable.
Test an update before applying it to the live world
- Read the CurseForge changelog for the target release. Mods can be added, removed or updated between releases.
- Copy the live world into a test installation.
- Install the target server pack and matching client profile in that test directory.
- Join with a matching client and check quests, inventories, structures, TaCZ weapons and other important content.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule downtime, take a final backup and replace the live files.
Never launch a live world repeatedly with a mismatched pack in the hope that it will repair itself. If an update damages the world or produces a persistent crash, stop and restore the pre-update backup.

The server exits immediately
- Confirm that you used the Java runtime supported by the pack.
- Check that the server-pack archive was fully extracted and that its Forge launcher or generated script is present.
- Verify that the launch command points to the Forge installation in this directory, not another Minecraft instance.
- Read the first error in the log, not only the final “server stopped” line. A missing library, permission problem or wrong Java version can produce the same final symptom.
A client cannot join
- Compare Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, the pack release and every TaCZ or add-on version byte-for-byte where possible.
- Remove an unauthorized client or server addition and retry with a clean profile.
- Check the address and configured TCP port, then test the firewall and router forwarding from outside the home network.
- If the server is whitelisted, confirm that the player’s exact account name was added.
Loading stalls or the game crashes
- Move the server allocation toward the 10 GB recommendation if physical memory permits.
- Check the server and client logs for a named mod rather than deleting random files.
- Undo recently added mods and test the official release without extras.
- Lower view and simulation distance after the server starts successfully but struggles while players explore.
Quests or content are missing
Prefer the CurseForge distribution for the complete supported pack. The Modrinth project notes that it cannot include every content or optimization mod, cannot upload server packs, and that FTB Quests may require separate handling. Do not assume that a Modrinth client profile contains everything needed for the dedicated server.
The world appears corrupted after an update
Stop the server, preserve the current files for diagnosis, and restore the pre-update backup. Reinstall the matching server and client release in a clean directory, then test the restored world before allowing players back in.
A practical launch checklist
- Server pack is from the intended CurseForge release.
- Minecraft is Java Edition 1.20.1 on server and clients.
- Forge loader and Java runtime are supported and consistent.
- About 10 GB is allocated initially, with operating-system headroom.
- The server has started once, generated files and accepted the EULA.
server.properties, whitelist and administrator access are configured.- Remote players can reach the configured TCP port, or the host panel supplies a reachable address.
- Every client uses the exact same modpack release and TaCZ-related files.
- A backup has been created and a restore has been tested.
- Any update has been tested on a copied world before live deployment.
The Bottom Line
Use the official CurseForge server pack on Minecraft Java 1.20.1 Forge, start with roughly 10 GB of RAM, synchronize every client and server file, and test backups before updates. Self-hosting gives you control but requires network and maintenance work; a managed host can simplify those tasks only if it supports the exact Forge 1.20.1 pack release you plan to run.
