To host Towards Rocket Science for friends, use the pack’s matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server pack, not the client download. Extract server.zip into a clean directory, install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime, start the Forge server once, accept the EULA, configure access on port 25565 if necessary, and make every player install the identical pack and Forge versions. If you do not want to manage Java, files, backups, or port forwarding, use a managed host that explicitly supports the matching server pack.

What you are hosting

Towards Rocket Science is a large, progression-based Minecraft modpack built around industry, exploration and space travel. Its stated end goal is to terraform the moon after researching and constructing the systems needed to reach other planets and operate a space station.

The current CurseForge listing targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. CurseForge lists Towards-Rocket-Science-2.7.7.zip as the latest release, dated October 28, 2025, and provides a corresponding server.zip in the Minecraft 1.12 Server Packs area. The project page recorded 668,525 downloads on October 15, 2026. Those figures describe the project page, not a guarantee of server capacity or compatibility with every newer Java installation.

How progression affects a server

  • Chapter 1: Minecolonies/Tektopia, BuildCraft and Tinkers’ Construct establish resource gathering, processing and early automation.
  • Chapter 2: Immersive Engineering and related projects add mass production and heavy industry.
  • Chapter 2.5: Refined Storage introduces digital storage and its supporting infrastructure.
  • Chapter 3: Advanced Rocketry covers satellites and asteroid mining.
  • Chapter 4: Advanced Rocketry expands into warp travel, gas mining and terraforming.

Because colonies, machines, storage networks and rocket systems can all remain active in loaded chunks, the server has more ongoing work than an unmodified Minecraft world. No guaranteed player count, tick rate, startup time or minimum heap for this pack is published, so treat memory figures as starting guidance rather than a promise.

Choose self-hosting or a managed host

Both approaches run the same type of Forge server. The difference is who performs installation, networking, maintenance and recovery.

Decision point Self-hosted machine Managed host
Initial setup Install Java and Forge, extract the server pack, accept the EULA and configure the network. Select a supported modpack and plan in a control panel.
Network exposure You handle the firewall, router and public address, normally using port 25565. The provider supplies a public endpoint; port forwarding is normally unnecessary.
Control Full access to world files, configs, logs and scripts. Panel-based controls; filesystem access, backups and limits depend on the provider.
Cost pattern Uses an existing computer or adds hardware, electricity and maintenance costs. Recurring hosting subscription; exact price and availability must be checked when ordering.
Recovery You create, verify and restore your own backups. Confirm what backup and restore functions are included before paying.

Self-hosting suits an owner who is comfortable with Java, operating-system security and router settings. A managed service is usually easier for a group that wants to play quickly or cannot expose a home network. CurseForge’s hosted-server workflow uses a matching server pack, a selected plan and region, server details, and payment; its service is powered by Shockbyte and billed through Tebex. The owner can then share a direct link or import code so friends add the profile in the CurseForge app.

Self-hosting: complete setup

1. Freeze the versions before installing anything

Write down the exact Minecraft version, Forge version and Towards Rocket Science release you intend to run. For the current listing, that means Minecraft 1.12.2 and the chosen pack release, such as 2.7.7. Do not let the launcher update individual mods independently. Every player must use the same pack archive and Forge profile; a single missing or newer mod can prevent a connection.

Keep the version information in your group chat or server notes. If you later change versions, announce a maintenance window and make a backup first.

2. Download the matching server pack

  1. Open the Towards Rocket Science project in CurseForge and enter its Files area.
  2. Select the project release you are running.
  3. In the files for that release, choose server.zip under Minecraft 1.12 Server Packs.
  4. Create a new, empty server directory and extract the archive there.

The client ZIP and server ZIP are not interchangeable. The server archive is prepared with dedicated-server files and excludes client-only material where appropriate. Do not copy a client visual mod into the server simply because the client has it installed.

3. Install the correct Java runtime

Minecraft’s official server documentation requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment to launch a server JAR. Forge’s 1.12 generation specifies Java 8 on a 64-bit JVM. Install that runtime on the machine that will actually run the server, then verify that the startup script uses it rather than a different Java version already on the system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit Java 8 runtime.
  • Remove ambiguity if multiple Java versions are installed: check the Java executable selected by the server script.
  • Do not assume a current Java release is a drop-in replacement for the Java version expected by 1.12.2 Forge.

4. Start the server once and accept the EULA

Run the startup script or Forge server JAR included with the extracted pack. The first launch normally creates configuration, libraries, logs and world-related files. Forge may stop at this stage because Minecraft requires acceptance of its EULA.

  1. Wait for the first launch to finish or stop.
  2. Open the generated eula.txt in the server directory.
  3. Change the EULA setting to the accepted value only after reading and agreeing to Minecraft’s EULA.
  4. Start the same server script again and watch the console for a completed startup message.

If the file is not created, inspect the console and the directory you launched from. A common mistake is editing an eula.txt in a different folder than the one used by the startup script.

5. Allocate memory deliberately

Begin with a conservative heap allocation, then observe actual behavior while players explore, build colonies and operate machines. Watch console warnings, garbage-collection pauses and tick-time or “can’t keep up” messages rather than choosing memory by guesswork. Leave enough RAM for the operating system and other services; assigning all physical memory to Java can make the machine less stable.

GhostCap’s current hosting page recommends a 16 GB plan for optimal performance and says heavy modpacks commonly need at least 8–10 GB allocated. These are provider guidance figures, not an independent benchmark or a guaranteed requirement for Towards Rocket Science. No universal RAM floor, maximum player count or guaranteed TPS for this pack is published.

Minecraft Dungeons: Standard Edition – Windows 10 [Digital Code]
  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

Increase the heap only when logs and observed pauses indicate that more memory is useful. If the server still has long tick times after memory is increased, investigate chunk loading, entity counts, automation and storage networks instead of assuming RAM alone will solve it.

6. Configure local and Internet access

For players on the same home network, give them the server computer’s local address and confirm the operating-system firewall allows Java to accept connections. For players outside the home, Minecraft’s official guidance says firewall and network configuration may be required; the standard Java server port is 25565.

  1. Reserve or otherwise identify the host computer’s local address so a router rule does not point to a changing device.
  2. Allow the Java server through the host firewall.
  3. Forward only TCP port 25565 from the router to the server computer if your network requires port forwarding.
  4. Protect the router and host accounts with strong, unique passwords and current security updates.
  5. Test from a second network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than testing only from inside the same LAN.

Never publish more ports than the server needs. If your Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work; a managed host or a suitable private networking solution may then be simpler than changing your entire home network.

7. Apply server settings before inviting players

Stop the server before editing configuration files. Set the world name, difficulty, whitelist and any gameplay options you want the group to use. Start again and confirm the settings in the console. A whitelist is especially useful for a private group: add each player’s exact Minecraft account name before sharing the address.

Do not change mod configuration files casually. Mod IDs, world-generation settings and machine recipes can affect an existing world. Record every intentional change so you can reproduce it after a reinstall.

  • A GIFT FOR PLAYERS — Give Minecraft players Minecoins to spend on content in the in-game Marketplace.

8. Back up before updates and major construction

Stop the server cleanly before copying files. Back up the world directory together with the server configuration and the exact pack archive used to create it. Keep at least one copy away from the server machine. Periodically test a restore on a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Before changing the pack version, make a dated backup and preserve the previous server directory. If the update fails, stop the new instance, restore the known-good files and return players to the previous client pack.

Make clients match the server

Each player should install:

  • Minecraft 1.12.2;
  • the same Forge version targeted by the server pack;
  • the same Towards Rocket Science release;
  • the same mod and configuration files supplied by that release.

The pack page recommends OptiFine for visuals, but OptiFine is a client visual mod. Do not place it on a dedicated server unless the pack’s server files explicitly require it. Players should install visual additions on their own clients only when they are compatible with the chosen pack version.

Give friends the exact release number instead of telling them to download “the latest” pack. If a player gets a missing-mod, mismatched-version or registry error, compare the client’s mod list and Forge profile against a fresh installation of the server pack before changing server files.

Managed hosting: what the process looks like

CurseForge hosted-server flow

CurseForge’s hosted-server guide says a modpack must have a matching server pack. Its documented sequence is:

  1. Choose the modpack that has a matching server pack.
  2. Choose a hosting plan.
  3. Choose a region.
  4. Enter the server details.
  5. Complete payment.

CurseForge describes this service as eliminating manual file uploads and port forwarding for supported packs. After provisioning, the owner can share the direct link or import code so friends add the server profile in the CurseForge app. Confirm the current plan limits, backup policy, cancellation terms and pack availability at checkout; no price, uptime commitment or continuing availability is published.

Installing through a provider panel

GhostCap documents a specific installation path for this project:

  1. Order a plan that supports the pack.
  2. Open the game panel.
  3. Go to Modpacks.
  4. Search for CurseForge project ID 1016279.
  5. Install the pack and start the server.

That page advertises one-click installation and lists 16 GB RAM as its minimum recommended plan for optimal performance. Treat that number as the provider’s recommendation, not a measured requirement. A panel may handle installation and public networking while still leaving you responsible for player permissions, version changes and verifying backups.

Performance and maintenance checklist

  • Observe before tuning: record when lag occurs, how many players are online and what machines, colonies or dimensions are active.
  • Keep chunks under control: unexplored world generation and permanently loaded automation can create sustained work.
  • Use clean shutdowns: stop the server from its console or panel before maintenance; do not kill the process while it is writing the world.
  • Separate test and production worlds: test configuration changes on a copy before applying them to the shared world.
  • Schedule maintenance: announce restarts and updates so players do not lose progress.
  • Review logs: repeated Java errors, mod exceptions or long tick warnings are more useful than a single momentary lag spike.

No independent performance test for this pack is published by CurseForge or the provider. Avoid promising friends a specific player count or TPS until your own hardware, network and play pattern have demonstrated it.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server stops immediately

  • Check that the startup script is using 64-bit Java 8.
  • Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown line.
  • Confirm that you launched from the extracted server directory.
  • Make sure the EULA file has been accepted.
  • Restore the unmodified server pack if configuration files were edited manually.

A player cannot connect

  • Verify the player is using Minecraft 1.12.2, the same Forge version and the same pack release.
  • For a home server, test the local address from the LAN and the public address from a different network.
  • Check the host firewall and the router’s 25565 forwarding rule.
  • Confirm the server is actually running and listening on the expected port.
  • Read the client error for a missing mod, registry mismatch or authentication problem before reinstalling everything.

The server is laggy or freezes during activity

  • Check console tick-time and garbage-collection messages.
  • Note whether lag begins during exploration, colony growth, heavy factory operation or rocket activity.
  • Verify that the machine has free RAM for the operating system; assigning more Java memory is not automatically better.
  • Temporarily stop unnecessary automation or chunk loading to isolate the cause.
  • Restore a recent backup if a configuration change or mod update introduced the problem.

An update breaks the world

Stop the server, preserve the failed installation for diagnosis, and restore the dated world, configuration and pack archive from before the update. Have every player revert to the previous client release. Do not keep launching an incompatible version against the only copy of the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and administration essentials

Use a dedicated operating-system account for the server where practical, keep Java and the operating system patched within the versions compatible with Minecraft 1.12.2, and avoid running unrelated services under the same account. Restrict operator permissions to trusted people. A whitelist, regular backups and limited port exposure provide more practical protection than relying on an obscure address.

Document who can restart the server, where backups are stored, which pack release is active and how to roll back. If you move from a home machine to a host, copy the world only after stopping the old server and verifying that the destination uses the same pack and Forge versions.

Which option should you choose?

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have a suitable 64-bit machine and Java 8 environment.
  • You want direct access to world, configuration and log files.
  • You are comfortable with firewalls, port forwarding and backup testing.
  • You can investigate performance rather than expecting a guaranteed specification.

Choose managed hosting when

  • You want a panel-based installation instead of manually extracting and maintaining files.
  • Your home network cannot accept inbound connections or you do not want to expose it.
  • Your group prefers a recurring fee in exchange for provider infrastructure.
  • You have checked the provider’s current support for the exact server pack, memory plan, backups, restore process and cancellation terms.

For either choice, the non-negotiable requirement is version identity: one Minecraft version, one Forge version and one pack release across the server and every client. That consistency prevents most connection failures and makes any later troubleshooting meaningful.
