What you are actually installing
All the Magic Spellbound – ATMS is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. It is the magic-focused branch of the All the Mods concept: technology mods were removed and progression centers on magic systems such as Blood Magic and Botania. ATMTeam describes the challenge as, “You have conquered all the mods, but can you conquer all the magic?”

Before you download anything
Choose a hosting method
You have two practical choices:
- Self-hosting: Run the server on a computer you control. There is no recurring hosting bill, but the machine must stay on, and you handle Java, Forge, updates, router forwarding, firewall rules, storage and backups.
- Managed hosting: Rent a game-server instance. The provider normally supplies the public address and network setup and may offer one-click installation, scheduled backups and file access. You still need to verify that its current plan supports a 1.16.5 Forge pack and provides enough memory.
Do not choose a plan from an old RAM chart or a cached advertisement. Memory limits, supported modpacks, locations, prices and backup policies change. Check the provider’s live control panel or support documentation before paying.

Use a writable, persistent server folder
Create a dedicated folder on a local SSD or on the managed host’s persistent storage. Do not run the files from a temporary download directory, a read-only location or a folder synchronized by software that can lock files while the server is saving. You will need permission to create and modify eula.txt, world files, logs and configuration files.
Plan memory realistically
The pack-specific host notes use approximately 6 GB of RAM as a starting point for a small group. They estimate 8 GB for a larger group of roughly five to ten players. These are provider estimates, not an official ATMTeam specification. Treat them as operating baselines: watch the server log and actual player load, and increase the allocation if garbage-collection pauses, tick-time warnings or out-of-memory errors appear.

Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Giving a Java process every gigabyte in the machine can make the host less stable than assigning a smaller, sustainable heap.
Download the right Spellbound files
- Open the All the Magic Spellbound – ATMS project on CurseForge and go to its Files page.
- Locate the release you intend to run. For the current release identified above, download
Spellbound-2.3.0-server.zip. - Download
Spellbound-2.3.0.zipseparately only for player computers. It is a launcher manifest/client package, not the dedicated server distribution. - Transfer the server ZIP to the persistent folder on your home machine or upload it through the managed host’s file manager/SFTP interface.
- Extract every file while preserving the directory structure. If your extraction utility asks whether to overwrite files, stop and confirm that you are working in an empty server directory rather than mixing two releases.
Using the client ZIP as a server is a common failure point. It can omit server scripts and contain client-only components, so a successful launcher installation does not prove that it is suitable for dedicated hosting.
Install Java and verify the runtime
Java version
Start with a 64-bit Java 8 installation. The host guidance also reports Java 11 working in its setup, but Java 8 is the conservative choice for this 1.16.5 pack. Do not assume that the Java selected by your desktop launcher is the Java selected by the server script.

Open a terminal or command prompt in the server folder and run:
java -versionRead the output before continuing. If it reports a different major version than the one you intend to use, install the required 64-bit runtime or change the start script to the full path of the correct java executable. On a managed host, select the Java 8 runtime in the panel if the service offers a runtime selector.
Set a deliberate memory allocation
The supplied start script may already contain memory flags. If you edit them, keep the minimum and maximum heap within the RAM your machine can spare. A typical pattern is:
java -Xms6G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar noguiUse the actual Forge server JAR or script name supplied by the archive; do not rename a file merely to match this example. The important points are a 64-bit runtime, a heap appropriate to your host and the nogui option on a machine where you do not need the graphical server window.
Install Forge and perform the first boot
When the archive already includes Forge
Many server packs include a start script and the Forge files they need. On Windows, use the supplied .bat file. On Linux, use the supplied .sh file. If Linux refuses to run it because it is not executable, grant execute permission and then launch it:

./start.shThe exact script name can differ, so use the file delivered in your server ZIP.
When Forge is not installed
If the extracted files contain a Forge installer rather than an installed server, run the installer from the server directory:
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServerUse the exact installer filename in your folder if it includes a version suffix. The installer creates the Forge server files and libraries. Do not start the server from a different working directory, because relative paths in scripts and configuration files can then point to the wrong place.
Accept the Minecraft EULA
- Start the server once. It may stop immediately while generating files.
- Open the newly created
eula.txtin a text editor. - Change the line from
eula=falsetoeula=true, save it and close the editor. - Run the same start script or command again.
Only accept the EULA after reading the agreement for yourself. If the file keeps reverting, check that the folder is writable and that you edited the eula.txt in the server directory actually used by the script.
Wait for registration to finish
Forge has to discover and register the pack’s many mods on first boot. That can take several minutes, especially on a slower disk or CPU. Wait for the server’s completion line and a usable console prompt before stopping it, inviting players or judging performance. Interrupting this stage can leave a partially generated world or misleading error messages.

After the first successful boot, stop the server cleanly from its console, make a backup of the new world and configuration, then start it again. Keep a dated backup before changing the pack release or replacing Forge files.
Make a self-hosted server reachable
Router and firewall requirements
A home server is normally reached through your router. Forward TCP port 25565 from the router to the local IP address of the machine running the server. Create a matching inbound firewall rule on that machine. If the firewall asks for an application, allow the Java executable used by the start script rather than a different Java installation.
- Give the host computer a stable local address, using your router’s reservation feature or an equivalent local-network configuration.
- Create the router’s port-forward rule for TCP 25565 to that address.
- Allow the same TCP port through the operating system firewall.
- Start the server and confirm that it has reached its ready state.
- Give friends the public address shown by your internet connection. Players on the same home network may use the host’s local address instead.
Do not expose additional ports just because a guide lists them for another game. Spellbound’s normal Minecraft connection uses TCP 25565. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, a router rule alone will not make the server publicly reachable; use a managed host or a network solution that you administer and understand.
Managed hosting differences
A managed host normally provides the public address, firewall and routing layer, so you do not configure your home router. Upload the server ZIP through the provider’s file manager or SFTP, select the supported Forge/Minecraft version, set the Java runtime and memory limit, and start the instance. Menus vary by provider; if there is no explicit Spellbound installer, treat the service as a normal Forge server and follow its documented custom-JAR or modpack import process.
Confirm these items before committing to a plan:
- Forge support for Minecraft 1.16.5, including custom modpack files.
- At least the memory allocation you need, with no hidden hard cap below the advertised amount.
- Access to the complete server directory, including logs, configs, mods and world backups.
- A way to change Java versions or a clear statement of which Java runtime is used.
- Automatic backups, retention limits and the procedure for restoring one.
- A server location close enough to your players for acceptable latency.
Make every player match the server
Each participant must install the same Spellbound release in a Java Edition launcher. The pack version, Minecraft version, Forge loader and mod set need to agree. A player using a newer pack can be refused during login or connect with missing registry entries; an older client can produce the same kind of mismatch.

Have everyone close Minecraft before updating the instance. If you change versions on the server, tell the group to update their launcher profiles as well. Keep client-only visual additions—such as shaders, HUD overlays or texture enhancements—on player computers only. A dedicated server should contain the server-compatible files from the server ZIP, not optional client presentation mods.

Bedrock Edition clients cannot load this pack. Spellbound is a Forge modpack for Java Edition 1.16.5, and a Bedrock device cannot join it as a normal client. Cross-play bridges do not turn Forge mods into Bedrock content, so a Bedrock player would need a separate Java-capable setup to participate.

Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying a world. Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory so a failed update, disk error or accidental deletion cannot remove both copies. Label backups with the pack release and date. Preserve the configuration and scripts with the world; a world restored into a different mod set can behave unpredictably.
Updating the pack
- Announce maintenance and stop the running server.
- Copy the complete world, configuration and server files to a separate backup location.
- Read the release notes for the target Spellbound version and confirm that your Java and Forge choices remain supported.
- Install the new server pack in a fresh directory whenever possible, rather than overwriting a working installation.
- Move or restore the world only after the new server has completed a clean first boot without it.
- Update every player’s launcher instance to the identical release before opening the server to the group.
Never test a major pack change on the only copy of a valued world. If the new release fails, the old directory and backup give you a controlled rollback path.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Self-host when you are comfortable administering a machine and can keep it online. Choose managed hosting when router access, uptime or maintenance is the bigger obstacle. In both cases, the pack’s Java/Forge compatibility and your ability to make independent backups matter more than a provider’s branding.

A launch checklist
- Downloaded the separate
Spellbound-2.3.0-server.zip(or the exact release you selected), not only the client ZIP. - Extracted it into a persistent, writable directory.
- Verified the Java runtime with
java -versionand selected Java 8 unless your tested setup deliberately uses Java 11. - Set a heap appropriate to the machine, starting near 6 GB for a small group.
- Installed Forge if the archive did not already contain an installed loader.
- Run once, changed
eula=falsetoeula=true, and started again. - Waited for first-boot registration to complete.
- Created a backup before inviting players or changing files.
- Forwarded TCP 25565 and allowed it through the firewall only when self-hosting.
- Confirmed that every player uses the same Java Edition Spellbound release and Forge setup.

The reliable path is simple but exact: use the dedicated Spellbound server archive, run Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge with a verified Java 8 runtime, begin around 6 GB of RAM, accept the EULA, let the first boot finish, and keep the server and clients on one identical release. Self-hosters must expose TCP 25565 and maintain their own backups; managed hosts remove much of that network work but still require you to verify Forge support, Java selection, memory and backup controls. Bedrock Edition is not compatible with this Forge pack.
