You can host an Assetto Corsa server behind CGNAT or a locked-down router by putting the server computer and every driver on the same private overlay network. Run the dedicated server or AssettoServer at home, install Tailscale or ZeroTier on each participating device, authorize the members, and have drivers connect to the host’s overlay IP and configured game port. No inbound router rule is required.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This arrangement is best for a private group. If you need a public lobby that anyone can discover, a managed Assetto Corsa host is usually simpler because the server runs in a data center instead of inside your home network.

How the no-port-forwarding setup works
Traditional Assetto Corsa hosting expects other players to reach your home public address. A router forwards the game’s listening port to the computer running the server, and the server may register that endpoint with the lobby service. CGNAT, carrier firewalls, double-NAT installations and many shared connections prevent that inbound path from working.
A private overlay changes the path rather than the Assetto Corsa server itself. The server still listens on its normal local ports, but the host and drivers receive private overlay addresses. The game traffic travels through the overlay’s encrypted virtual network. Because each participant initiates an outbound connection to the overlay service, the home router does not need an inbound forwarding rule.

The overlay may establish a direct device-to-device path. If NAT traversal fails, it can use a relay. Direct paths normally have the lowest latency; relays are a compatibility fallback and can be slower. Your server configuration, cars, tracks and launch method remain the same either way.
Choose the right hosting method
| Option | Best for | Router changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tailscale | A private, friends-only server | Usually none; outbound HTTPS and relay paths are supported | Every driver must join the same tailnet, and a relayed path may add latency |
| ZeroTier | A LAN-like private network for users comfortable with network IDs | No inbound forwarding; outbound UDP 9993 is normally needed for root-server access | Direct UDP and relay behavior may require firewall diagnosis |
| Managed Assetto Corsa host | A public lobby or a server you do not want to maintain at home | None on the home router | Provider cost, account dependence and plan limits |
Use Tailscale when the priority is the least network administration for a small, known group. Choose ZeroTier when you want a virtual network that feels more like a private LAN and you are comfortable authorizing members by network ID. Choose managed hosting when participants should not install an overlay client or when the server must remain online without your gaming PC.

- A Windows PC or other supported computer that can run the Assetto Corsa dedicated server or AssettoServer.
- A server installation created in a dedicated folder or launched through Content Manager. AssettoServer’s beginner guide documents both launch modes.
- Administrator access to install the overlay client and approve devices.
- The same overlay client installed on the server computer and every driver’s computer.
- A written record of the server’s configured game port and any additional ports shown in its configuration. Do not invent new values; use the values generated by your server setup.
- Permission to allow the server executable and overlay client through the operating system firewall on a private network.
Decide whether the server is private or public before configuring lobby behavior. A private overlay server should be shared by its overlay address with selected members. It should not advertise a home public address simply to make lobby discovery work. A public listing is a different operating model and is better suited to a managed host or a properly reachable public network.
Set up the Assetto Corsa server locally
Install the dedicated files or AssettoServer
Install the official dedicated-server files or AssettoServer in a folder reserved for the server. AssettoServer can be run directly from its dedicated folder or started through Content Manager. Pick one launch method and keep its configuration files in one known location so that updates do not leave you editing a different copy than the one actually running.
Build the session in Content Manager or by editing the dedicated-folder configuration. Select the track, cars, session sequence, time settings and entry slots you want. Start the server locally and confirm that it reaches its ready state before adding an overlay. This isolates game configuration problems from networking problems.

Record the listening port
Find the game port in the server configuration you are using. Assetto Corsa and its server wrappers can expose more than one network setting, so copy the exact value from the active configuration rather than relying on a number from an old tutorial. The value you give drivers must match the port on which the process is listening.

Allow the process on a private firewall profile
When the operating system asks whether the dedicated server may communicate on a network, allow it on the private network profile used by the overlay. If you previously denied the prompt, open the firewall’s allowed-app settings and add the server executable. The overlay client also needs to communicate outbound. Do not disable the firewall globally as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Check for lobby-registration errors
AssettoServer’s guide describes lobby-registration errors associated with incorrect port-forwarding settings. Those messages are relevant when you are trying to publish a server through the public lobby, but they do not prove that a private overlay connection is broken. For an overlay-only server, first test a direct connection to the host’s overlay address. Treat lobby registration as a separate, optional feature.
Host with Tailscale
Install and authorize the devices
- Install Tailscale on the computer running Assetto Corsa and sign in.
- Have each driver install Tailscale and sign in with an account that can access the same tailnet, or accept an invitation to the private network.
- In the administration view, verify that the server computer and every driver appear as authorized devices. Remove old or unknown devices before sharing the server.
Tailscale’s private-game-server workflow is designed for sharing a service with selected friends without opening a router port or changing an inbound firewall rule. The access boundary is membership in your tailnet, so only authorize people who should be able to reach the server computer.
Share the server privately
Use the sharing controls to grant the selected users access to the server device. Drivers do not need to know your home public IP address. They use the Tailscale address assigned to the host, which is visible in the client or device list. Keep a note of that address and the Assetto Corsa game port from your server configuration.

Understand Tailscale’s connection paths
Tailscale can connect devices directly, through a peer relay, or through a DERP relay. Its documentation describes direct connections as the best-performing path because the devices communicate without an intermediary, while noting that a direct path is not always possible. A relay allows the server to work when NAT traversal fails, but the extra hop can increase latency or reduce available throughput.
You do not normally choose a relay manually. Let the client negotiate the path, then inspect its connection information while two drivers are connected. A relayed result is not an automatic failure; it is a signal to test car-count, update rate and ping before inviting a larger group.
Give drivers a direct endpoint
- Start the Assetto Corsa server and wait until it reports that the session is listening.
- Send each authorized driver the host’s Tailscale IP address and the configured game port through a private channel.
- In Content Manager, add the endpoint as a favorite or use its direct-connect option when lobby discovery does not show the server.
- Have one driver join first, then add a second driver while watching the server console and overlay connection status.
If a driver can reach the host through Tailscale but Assetto Corsa cannot join, check the game port, server session state and firewall rule before changing overlay settings.
Host with ZeroTier
Create a private virtual network
- Install ZeroTier on the server computer and on every driver’s computer.
- Create one private network and record its network ID.
- Have each participant join using that ID.
- Authorize the member devices in the network’s member list. An unauthorized device may appear to have the client installed but will not be a participant in your private network.
ZeroTier presents a virtual network that can resemble a small LAN. The server and drivers receive ZeroTier addresses, and the game endpoint is the host’s ZeroTier address plus the Assetto Corsa port configured locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck outbound access
ZeroTier normally needs outbound UDP 9993 to reach its root servers. This is an outbound requirement, not an inbound port-forwarding rule. On restrictive networks, confirm that the host and drivers can send that traffic. Split tunneling is the default, so ordinary internet traffic does not have to pass through the virtual network.

Know when TCP relay is being used
ZeroTier documents a TCP relay service that the ZeroTierOne agent falls back to when it cannot make UDP connections. A relay can keep the virtual network usable behind restrictive NAT or firewalls, but it may add latency and reduce consistency compared with direct UDP. If direct traffic fails, check local firewall rules, outbound UDP 9993 and the member authorization state before assuming the Assetto Corsa server is at fault.
Connect through the ZeroTier address
- Start the server and verify its listening port in the active configuration.
- Copy the server computer’s ZeroTier address from the client.
- Give that address and the game port to authorized drivers.
- Use Content Manager’s favorite or direct-connection function if the public lobby does not discover the private endpoint.
- Test with two drivers while observing whether the ZeroTier path is direct or relayed.
How drivers join a private overlay server
Send drivers a short, unambiguous connection note. It should identify the overlay to install, the network or tailnet invitation to accept, the host’s overlay IP address, the game port and the server name shown in Content Manager. Tell them not to use your home public IP address.
Each driver should complete these checks before launching the game:
- The overlay client is running and shows the driver as an authorized member.
- The server computer appears online in the overlay device list.
- The driver can reach the host over the overlay according to the client’s status tools.
- The Assetto Corsa installation has the content required by the server’s session configuration.
If lobby discovery is absent, direct connection is the normal fallback. A private overlay is intentionally not the same thing as a globally searchable public lobby.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The host runs, but nobody can join | Wrong overlay address, wrong game port or server blocked by the private firewall | Read the port from the active configuration, verify the host’s overlay IP, and allow the server executable on the private profile |
| One driver joins and another cannot | The second device is not authorized or is on a different overlay network | Check tailnet membership or ZeroTier network ID and approve the exact device |
| The server is missing from the lobby | Private overlay traffic is not public lobby discovery, or lobby registration is misconfigured | Use the host overlay IP and direct-connect or favorite entry |
| Tailscale shows a relay | Direct NAT traversal was not possible | Continue testing with a small group; expect more latency and investigate whether a different network improves the path |
| ZeroTier shows TCP relay or poor responsiveness | UDP traversal is blocked or outbound UDP 9993 is unavailable | Check egress firewall rules, member authorization and local network restrictions |
| The server console reports lobby-registration errors | Public lobby settings or port-forwarding assumptions do not match the private setup | Separate lobby registration from private access and test the overlay endpoint directly |
| A driver can see the host but the game times out | The overlay is reachable but the Assetto Corsa process is listening on another port or interface | Restart the server from the intended configuration, confirm the listening port and re-enter the endpoint |
Latency, capacity and relay trade-offs
The overlay removes the need for an inbound router rule; it does not eliminate network delay. A direct path usually gives the best result. A peer relay, DERP relay or ZeroTier TCP relay adds an intermediary, and the additional distance can be noticeable in a racing simulator.

Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Test the exact route your group will use rather than judging performance from the overlay installation alone. Start with two drivers, watch connection status and observe whether input feels stable. If the path is relayed, keep the first event small, avoid adding unnecessary server load and choose a geographically closer managed host if the relay remains unsuitable.
There is no universal player limit established here. The practical limit depends on the server computer, session configuration, upload capacity and the quality of the direct or relayed paths. Increase participation gradually instead of assuming that a private overlay has the same capacity as a data-center connection.
Security and administration
Limit membership
A private overlay is an access-control system as well as a transport. Authorize only the devices that need to race, remove former members and avoid posting the overlay address in a public forum. Share invitations and connection details privately.
Keep the game port scoped
Allow the Assetto Corsa executable on the private firewall profile used by the overlay. Do not expose the same port to every interface unless your design requires it. If the server machine has several network adapters, verify which interface the process is using.
Separate racing access from administration
Drivers need the game endpoint, not administrative access to the server computer. Use the overlay’s membership controls to limit who can reach the device, and keep operating-system accounts and server-management credentials private.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When managed hosting is the better answer
A managed Assetto Corsa host runs the server in a data center. The provider’s hosting guide states that this removes the need to leave a gaming PC running and avoids configuring port forwarding on the home router. Drivers can join through the host’s normal public endpoint, so they do not have to install Tailscale or ZeroTier.
This option fits a public lobby, a community that changes membership frequently or an organizer who cannot keep a home computer online. The trade-offs are a recurring provider charge, dependence on the provider’s account and controls, and plan limits that may affect storage, traffic or server resources. Review those limits before moving an established configuration.
For a small group of friends who already agree to install one client, an overlay keeps the server under your control and avoids a hosting bill. For open access, a managed host usually removes more friction than trying to make a private overlay behave like a public lobby.
Quick Recap
Recommended rollout checklist
- Choose Tailscale for the simplest friends-only workflow, ZeroTier for a LAN-like virtual network, or managed hosting for public access.
- Install the dedicated server or AssettoServer and confirm it runs locally through its dedicated folder or Content Manager.
- Record the active game port and allow the server executable on the host’s private firewall profile.
- Install the same overlay client on the host and every driver, then authorize every device.
- Send the host’s overlay IP and game port, not the home public IP.
- Use a favorite or direct connection in Content Manager if lobby discovery is unavailable.
- Test with two drivers and inspect whether the path is direct or relayed.
- If the route is relayed and performance is poor, check outbound restrictions, reduce the initial group size or move the server to a managed host.
