To host an Engineer’s Life 2 (EL2) server, download the matching Forge 1.16.5 server pack from the modpack’s CurseForge files page, extract it into its own folder, accept Mojang’s EULA in eula.txt, and start the included LaunchServer.bat (Windows) or LaunchServer.sh (Linux and macOS). Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader, and EL2 release family as the server.

What Engineer’s Life 2 requires
Engineer’s Life 2 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. Its progression combines technology, quests, exploration, and multiplayer, with Immersive Engineering at the center of the experience. A normal vanilla server or a server running a different modpack is not compatible with an EL2 client.
You need Minecraft Java Edition, a Java runtime compatible with the Forge 1.16.5 build used by your selected EL2 release, the corresponding EL2 server-pack archive, and a computer or hosting account that can keep the server process running. The retrieved support material does not state one universal Java major version for every Forge 1.16.5 build, so check the requirements of the exact Forge build in the pack rather than assuming a version.

- Server software: the EL2 server pack, not just a Forge installer.
- Java: a supported runtime for the selected Forge build.
- Storage: enough room for the extracted pack, generated world, logs, backups, and future updates.
- Network: local connectivity for a LAN game, or firewall and router configuration for players outside your home.
- Client parity: each player must install the same Minecraft, Forge, and EL2 release family.
Download the correct EL2 server pack
Open the official Engineer’s Life 2 files page on CurseForge and select a server-pack file that matches the release installed by your players. The latest listed 1.16.5 Forge server pack is EL2-Serverpack-1.18a. The corresponding latest EL2 release is shown as EL2 – 1.18a [1.16.5], dated December 26, 2023. Older server packs remain listed, so do not automatically choose the newest archive if your client profile is pinned to an earlier release.

Download the server pack itself rather than copying a client instance folder. Client launchers can contain extra metadata, optional files, or launcher-specific paths that are not a dependable dedicated-server layout.
Prepare Java and a dedicated server folder
Install Minecraft Java Edition and Java
Install Minecraft Java Edition for the players who will connect. On the host, install a Java runtime accepted by the Forge 1.16.5 build inside the chosen EL2 release. If you have multiple Java installations, identify which executable the launch script will call and test that executable before troubleshooting the modpack.
Do not treat “Minecraft 1.16.5” as proof of one fixed Java requirement. Forge builds and launch arrangements can differ. Use the Forge build’s own requirement information or the instructions included with the selected pack, then keep that Java major version consistent while diagnosing startup problems.
Create an isolated directory
Make a new directory used only for this server, such as an EL2 server folder in a location with adequate storage. Extract the complete archive into that directory. Keep the server separate from the client profile so that a client update cannot silently replace server files.

Preserve the archive’s supplied scripts, mods, configuration files, libraries, and any included world data. Renaming the top-level folder is fine; deleting or selectively copying files is not a reliable installation method. A clean directory also makes backups and rollback easier.

Accept the EULA and start the server
The pack author’s concise instructions are: “1 – Open eula.txt file, read EULA and change “false” to “true” if you accept it. 2 – Run LaunchServer.bat or .sh 3 – Enjoy” — Engineer’s Life 2 server-pack instructions on CurseForge, author dreams01.
- Open the extracted server directory and locate
eula.txt. - Read Mojang’s EULA. Change
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept it. Saving the file without accepting the EULA will not start the server. - On Windows, double-click
LaunchServer.bat, or run it from a command prompt opened in the server directory. - On Linux or macOS, run
LaunchServer.shfrom a terminal in the server directory. If the operating system reports that the script is not executable, grant execute permission using your normal file-permission tools, then run it again. - Allow the first launch to finish. Forge and the pack may create the world, configuration files, logs, and other runtime data.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console with the server’s
stopcommand before changing settings or making a backup.
A first run can take longer than later starts while files are generated. Watch the console for a completed startup message and for errors that identify a missing Java runtime, a damaged archive, or a mod-loading failure. Do not repeatedly launch several copies at once; two processes writing the same world can corrupt it.
Configure the server after the first boot
Once the server has started and then been stopped, edit the generated settings in the server directory. The exact options you choose depend on how you want to play: difficulty, game mode, player list controls, and other world or server rules are host decisions rather than fixed EL2 requirements.
Change one setting at a time, save it, and restart cleanly. Keep a copy of the original file before making substantial changes. If a change prevents startup, restore the last known-good copy instead of deleting the world to make the error disappear.

The cited EL2 pack pages do not prescribe a canonical network port, RAM figure, forwarding recipe, or backup policy. Treat those as environment-specific settings. Use the port shown in your own generated server configuration, and document any custom port for your players.
Make the server reachable
LAN play
Players on the same home or office network can usually connect using the host computer’s local address and the port configured for the server. The host firewall still needs to permit Java or the server process on the selected network profile. Test from another device on the same network before attempting an Internet connection.
Internet play
For friends outside your local network, the host must accept the configured port through its operating-system firewall and, when the host is behind a router, forward that port to the host computer’s private address. Your Internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections, in which case ordinary forwarding may not work.
Because EL2’s pack materials do not define a universal port or router procedure, record the values you actually use instead of copying a generic recipe. Give friends the reachable public address and configured port, never the private LAN address. If your public address changes, provide an address method you control and update players when it changes.

- Expose only the port the server needs; do not disable the entire firewall.
- Keep the host operating system, Java runtime, and server files updated within the release you have chosen.
- Use the server’s access controls for a private group and do not share administrative credentials.
- Run the process under a dedicated operating-system account when practical, especially on an always-on machine.
Make every client match the server
Most “the server starts but my friend cannot join” cases are version or network mismatches. Have every player record the exact release shown in their launcher before connecting.

The server pack and client pack are related but serve different purposes. The server should run the dedicated server files; players should use their normal EL2 client installation. Updating only one side is enough to break a previously working connection.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control, but you are responsible for Java, files, networking, backups, and updates. A managed Minecraft host is an optional convenience route. The EL2 pack description names BisectHosting as a provider where the author’s modpacks can be installed and updated automatically, and it recommends a plan of at least 4 GB. Verify the provider’s current plans, supported EL2 release, Java environment, backups, and terms before paying; those details can change.

Choose self-hosting when you want maximum file access or already have a reliable machine and network. Choose managed hosting when avoiding router administration and server maintenance is worth the recurring cost. In either case, retain a copy of your world and configuration outside the running server.

The window closes immediately
Start the script from a terminal so the error remains visible. Confirm that Java is installed, that the script is being run from the extracted server directory, and that the Java major version meets the selected Forge build’s requirement. Re-extract the archive if files are missing or an antivirus program quarantined a library.
The server says the EULA was not accepted
Stop the process, open the eula.txt that belongs to this server directory, and verify that the value is exactly true. Editing an unrelated copy elsewhere will not change the server you launch.

Forge reports a missing or incompatible mod
Check that you downloaded the server pack for the same EL2 release as the clients and that extraction preserved the complete mods and configuration directories. Do not add random versions from another pack. If the error started after an update, restore the previous server directory and world backup, then update both client and server together.
Friends time out, but the host can join locally
Test the server from the host and from another device on the same LAN, then check the operating-system firewall, router forwarding, private host address, and the port configured by the server. Confirm that friends are using the public address and that the Internet connection permits inbound traffic. A successful local test does not prove that the server is reachable from the Internet.

Compare Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge build, EL2 release, and installed mods on both sides. A server can be fully operational while rejecting a client with a different registry or mod list. Have the affected player reinstall the matching client profile rather than copying individual files until the lists agree.
Backups, updates, and recovery
Back up before changing anything
- Stop the server with the console
stopcommand and wait for the process to exit. - Copy the world directory, server configuration, scripts, and any files needed to reproduce the current installation.
- Store at least one copy outside the live server directory. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
- Label the backup with the EL2 release, Minecraft version, Forge build, and date.
The pack materials do not define a required backup frequency. Set one based on how much progress your group can afford to lose, and make an extra backup immediately before an update or major configuration change.
Update as a matched release
When moving to a newer EL2 release, download its corresponding server pack and update the clients to that same release. Stop the old server, back up the complete installation and world, prepare the new server directory, and test it before allowing players back in. Do not overwrite a working installation until you have a rollback copy.
If the new release fails, stop it and restore the previous server directory and world backup. Never open a world in a newer setup and then assume it can safely be returned to an older one; preserve the old copy before testing.

Practical launch checklist
- Everyone is using Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5.
- The server pack and all clients belong to the same EL2 release family.
- The Forge build and Java runtime meet the selected pack’s requirements.
- The archive was extracted completely into a dedicated server directory.
