How to Host an FTB Architect’s Exodus Server

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host an FTB Architect’s Exodus server, download the official server files for one specific pack release, install them in a dedicated folder, run the generated startup script with Java 17, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM (8 GB is FTB’s recommendation), accept the Minecraft EULA, and configure network access for anyone outside your home. The FTB server installer creates the required mod files and launch scripts; assembling a server by copying files from a client installation is not the supported method.

The release shown on FTB’s captured Architect’s Exodus versions page uses pack ID 127 and version ID 100498. Those identifiers can change when FTB publishes a newer release, so select the current version on the official page and use that exact release in every client and on the server.

Choose the exact Architect’s Exodus release first

Every player must use a client build that matches the server’s modpack release. Before downloading anything, open FTB’s official Architect’s Exodus versions or server-files page and record the pack ID and version ID shown for the release you intend to run. The page captured for this guide lists pack ID 127 and version ID 100498 as the latest version shown, with Minecraft 1.20.1 identified in the pack tags. Treat those numbers as a release selector, not as permanent values: FTB can publish a newer version later.

Item Value captured on FTB’s page How to use it
Pack Architect’s Exodus Choose this pack in the FTB launcher and on the server-files page.
Pack ID 127 Use with the installer’s -pack argument.
Version ID 100498 Use with -version when you want this precise release.
Minecraft tag 1.20.1 Confirm that each player’s launcher instance is for the same Minecraft generation.

Write the selected IDs in a note and give them to every player. Pinning a known release is preferable for a private server because automatic updates can change mods or configuration at an inconvenient time. If you deliberately want the newest release, select it on the FTB page and update both server and clients together.

Requirements and sensible hardware planning

Java

Architect’s Exodus requires Java 17 according to FTB’s pack information. Use a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. The FTB installer can download an appropriate runtime during installation unless the administrator disables that behavior with the installer’s no-Java option. If you provide Java yourself, verify that the executable is Java 17 before starting the server; a different major version can cause an immediate launch failure or mod errors.

Memory

FTB lists 6 GB of RAM as the minimum and 8 GB as the recommendation for the server. These are allocation requirements for the pack, not a promise of a particular player count or tick rate. No official player-capacity or independent benchmark figure establishes how many simultaneous players a given computer can support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave memory for the operating system, the launcher, and other services. A computer with 16 GB of total system RAM is a sensible starting point for a small private server because it can reserve 8 GB for the server while retaining headroom, but actual capacity depends on CPU performance, storage, view distances, automation, and the number of players. Do not assign all physical memory to Java.

Storage and network

Create a dedicated directory on a drive with enough free space for the installer, extracted mod files, world data, logs, and backups. FTB does not publish a fixed disk-space requirement for this pack, so check free space before installation and monitor it as the world grows. For remote play, the host also needs an upload connection that can sustain the players’ activity; your ISP’s upload limits and latency matter more than download speed alone.

  • A 64-bit operating system supported by your chosen installer build.
  • Java 17, either supplied by the installer or already installed.
  • At least 6 GB available for the server process; 8 GB is the FTB recommendation.
  • Free storage for the server directory and separate backup copies.
  • Administrative access to the computer and, for remote players, the router and firewall.

Download the official server installer

Use FTB’s generated server-files download for Architect’s Exodus. Do not copy a client instance, manually select individual mods, or download an unrelated generic Minecraft server jar. The official guide explains that its purpose is to download the files required to set up an FTB modpack server, and the installer downloads and extracts the pack components for you.

Windows

Select the installer architecture that matches the machine, such as AMD64 for most modern Intel- or AMD-based PCs or Arm for a compatible Windows-on-Arm system. Save the installer in a new, dedicated folder. FTB warns that the filename identifies the pack and version, so do not rename it before running it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS

Choose the installer matching the Mac’s processor architecture: Intel/AMD for Intel Macs or Arm for Apple-silicon Macs. Keep the original filename, place it in the server directory, and run it from Terminal if macOS blocks a direct launch. You may need to approve the executable in macOS security settings; only do so for the file obtained from FTB’s official page.

Linux

Download the Linux installer for the machine’s architecture, preserve the filename, and execute it from a terminal in the target directory. If the shell reports that the file is not executable, grant execute permission using your distribution’s normal file-permission tools, then run it again. Keep the terminal output because it identifies download or extraction failures.

Install the files in a dedicated directory

  1. Create the folder. Use a short path dedicated to this server, such as a folder under your user or games directory. Avoid placing the world inside a temporary-download folder or a directory synchronized by software that may lock files while the server is running.
  2. Copy the unchanged installer into the folder. The filename must retain the pack and version information generated by FTB.
  3. Run the installer. The installer downloads and extracts the Architect’s Exodus server files. On Windows, it generates a run.bat launcher. On macOS and Linux, it creates the equivalent startup script for execution from a terminal.
  4. Wait for extraction to finish. Do not close the terminal or remove the installer while downloads are in progress. A successful run leaves the server files, configuration folders, libraries, and startup script together in the installation directory.
  5. Record the release. Keep the pack and version IDs in a text file next to the server so another administrator can reproduce the installation.

The installer supports explicit version selection, latest-release selection, automatic mode, download validation, configurable download threads, and verbose output. Use explicit IDs when you need a repeatable installation. Validation and verbose output are useful when a download is incomplete or a mirror connection fails.

Start the server with Java 17

Open the installation directory and run the generated launcher rather than inventing a new command line. On Windows, double-click run.bat or launch it from Command Prompt so you can read the output. On macOS or Linux, execute the generated startup script in Terminal and leave that terminal attached while the server is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need to install a particular release from the command line, the installer README documents this form:

./serverinstaller -pack <pack_id> -version <version_id>

For the release captured above, the corresponding values are pack ID 127 and version ID 100498. Use the current IDs from FTB’s page if it has moved to a newer release.

Set memory conservatively

The generated launcher normally contains the memory settings needed by the pack. If you edit them, keep the server allocation at or above FTB’s 6 GB minimum and use 8 GB as the target when the computer has enough total RAM. Reserve operating-system memory rather than assigning every gigabyte to Java. On a 16 GB computer, an 8 GB server allocation leaves the remainder for the operating system and background tasks; it is not a guarantee that every workload will perform well.

Recognize a successful start

The first launch can take longer while libraries and mod data are prepared. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready for commands before attempting to connect. If the process exits immediately, check the Java version, the launcher’s path, available memory, and the final lines of the log before changing configuration.

Accept the EULA and complete first-launch setup

  1. Run the generated startup script once.
  2. When the process stops or reports that the EULA must be accepted, open eula.txt in the server directory.
  3. Read Minecraft’s EULA and change the acceptance entry only if you agree to it.
  4. Save the file without changing its name or location.
  5. Run the startup script again and wait for the ready message.

Keep the world, configuration folders, logs, and launcher in the same server directory. That arrangement makes a complete backup possible and gives you the files needed to diagnose a failed update. Stop the server cleanly from its console before copying a live world; copying while chunks are being written can leave an inconsistent backup.

Connect from the host computer and home network

Testing on the same computer

On the computer running the server, connect through the Minecraft multiplayer screen using localhost. This test separates pack and Java problems from router problems: if localhost works, the server process and local client can communicate even before you expose the server to the internet.

Testing from another device at home

Use the host computer’s local network address from a second computer on the same network. Allow the server process through the operating system firewall when prompted, or create a rule for the port configured by the server. The exact menu names differ between Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, and security suites.

Allowing friends outside the home

  1. Identify the listening port in the server configuration and keep it consistent.
  2. Create a router port-forwarding rule that sends that port to the host computer’s local address.
  3. Permit the same port through the host operating system’s firewall.
  4. Give friends the public address and port, not the private address used inside your home.
  5. Test from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a phone connection, because some routers cannot test their own public address from inside the network.

Router interfaces and ISP restrictions vary, so there is no single FTB-specific forwarding procedure. A changing local address can silently break an existing rule; reserve the host’s local address in the router or otherwise keep the address stable. If friends still cannot connect, check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding even when the router rule looks correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give friends a reproducible client setup

Every player should install Architect’s Exodus through the FTB launcher and select the same release ID you recorded for the server. A client on another pack version can fail during the handshake, show missing-mod errors, or connect and then disconnect. Do not ask players to add or remove individual mods to “make it work”; first make the pack release identical.

  • Confirm the pack name and version in each launcher instance.
  • Confirm that the client uses the Minecraft version associated with that release, shown as 1.20.1 in the captured FTB tags.
  • Confirm that the server is actually running Java 17 and has reached its ready state.
  • Have players enter the reachable address and configured port exactly as supplied.

Backups, updates, and routine administration

Back up the right files

At minimum, back up the world directory, server configuration, mod and script changes, and any permissions or allow-list files you use. Keep at least one copy outside the server computer. Label backups with the pack version and date so you do not restore a world into an incompatible installation by accident.

Update deliberately

Stop the server, make a complete backup, and record the current release before updating. Use the installer’s explicit version option to install the new release in a separate directory when possible. Start the new directory with a copy of the backup, test it privately, and only then move players over. Keeping the old directory intact gives you a rollback path if a mod or configuration change causes errors.

Use installer diagnostics

If a download is suspect, run the installer’s validation feature. Increase verbosity when you need to see which file failed, and adjust download-thread settings only when a slow or unreliable connection makes parallel downloads fail. These controls affect installation diagnostics; they do not replace checking the Java runtime, memory allocation, or network configuration.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely checks Action
The launcher closes immediately. Java version, execute permission, path, and available RAM. Verify Java 17, run the script from a terminal, and read the final console lines. Confirm that at least 6 GB can be allocated.
The server stops asking for the EULA. eula.txt is missing, read-only, or still has the non-acceptance value. Read the EULA, edit the acceptance entry if you agree, save it in the server directory, and start again.
A client reports missing mods or a handshake failure. Client and server release IDs differ. Install the exact same Architect’s Exodus version on the client and server; do not mix files from another release.
Localhost works but friends cannot join. Firewall, router forwarding, public address, or ISP inbound restrictions. Check the configured port in both firewall and router rules, verify the host’s local address, and test from outside the home network.
The server becomes unstable under load. Memory headroom, CPU workload, storage, and world activity. Keep the allocation at the recommended 8 GB when possible, close competing applications, inspect logs, and avoid promising a player count that FTB has not specified.
The installer reports a corrupt or incomplete download. Interrupted connection, cache, or parallel-download failure. Run validation, retry with verbose output, and use a fresh installer in the dedicated directory without renaming it.

Self-hosting versus a managed server

Running the server at home gives you direct access to files, logs, backups, and configuration, but you are responsible for the computer and network. A managed Minecraft host removes much of the operating-system and router work in exchange for recurring fees and less control over the underlying machine. Choose based on the work you want to own, not on an assumed player capacity.

Consideration Self-hosted at home Managed hosting
Cost Uses existing hardware and electricity; no fixed hosting subscription, though upgrades may cost money. Recurring fee; current prices and included resources vary by provider and location.
Network Depends on home upload bandwidth, latency, ISP policy, firewall, and port forwarding. Provider supplies an internet-facing address and data-center connectivity, subject to its own limits.
Resources You choose the machine and can upgrade it, but must leave enough RAM and CPU for the operating system. You select an advertised resource tier; verify that it provides at least 6 GB and preferably 8 GB for this pack.
Backups and restore You design the schedule, storage, and off-site copy yourself. Some plans include automated backups, but check retention, download access, and restore controls.
Updates You control the installer, Java runtime, pack version, and rollback directories. The host may offer a panel or one-click updates; you still need to verify pack and client version compatibility.
Troubleshooting Full access to logs, scripts, and the operating system. Convenient support, but access to logs, Java settings, and files depends on the plan.
Network protection You configure your own firewall and accept responsibility for exposing the home connection. Some providers include network filtering or DDoS mitigation; confirm what is actually included.

Whether you self-host or rent a managed instance, retain a copy of the world and configuration that you can download. A hosting panel is not a substitute for an independent backup.

Operational checklist before inviting players

  • The server and every client use the same recorded Architect’s Exodus release.
  • The server is running Java 17.
  • The allocation is at least 6 GB, with 8 GB available when practical.
  • The EULA has been accepted and the server reaches its ready message.
  • Localhost connectivity has been tested.
  • Firewall and router rules use the server’s configured port.
  • A player outside the home network has tested the public address, or you have confirmed the relevant ISP limitation.
  • The world and configuration have a dated backup stored away from the live directory.
  • You know how to stop the server cleanly and where its logs are located.

What FTB does not guarantee

FTB’s published requirements establish Java 17, a 6 GB minimum, and an 8 GB recommendation. They do not establish a guaranteed number of players, a specific CPU model, a fixed disk-space requirement, a universal router procedure, or a guaranteed tick rate. Treat performance as dependent on your hardware, world, settings, and player activity. If you need a larger public community, test gradually, monitor logs and resource use, and increase resources based on observed behavior rather than a promised capacity.
