To host an FTB OceanBlock 2 server, install the exact pack release in the FTB App, download the matching server installer from Feed The Beast’s server-files browser, run it in a dedicated folder with Java 21, allocate at least 4 GB of memory (6 GB is the published recommendation), then configure access, backups and identical client installations. Self-hosting gives you control over files and network location; managed hosting reduces administration but adds a recurring fee and provider dependency.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The current official listing identifies release c1, Java 21, a 4 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended memory. The server-files browser lists the current 1.21.1 release as ID 100482. These values can change when FTB publishes a new pack build, so verify the release page and installer listing immediately before deployment.

Decide how you will host the world
There are two practical models: run the server on hardware you control, or rent a managed game-server instance.
Self-hosting on your own PC or a separate machine
Self-hosting has no hosting subscription and gives you direct access to the world, configuration, logs, scripts and mods. It also makes you responsible for Java, operating-system updates, firewall rules, router configuration, backups, power failures and troubleshooting. A separate machine is preferable when the host will also be used for gaming or other demanding workloads.

Managed hosting
A managed provider normally supplies a control panel, installation workflow and data-center connectivity. You trade some control for simpler administration and a recurring charge. Before paying, confirm all of the following with the provider:
- It supports the exact OceanBlock 2 release your group will play, not merely an older pack entry.
- It offers Java 21 and the loader required by that release.
- You can download the complete world, configuration and server files if you leave.
- Backups are available, with clear retention and restore procedures.
- The data-center region is close enough to your players for acceptable latency.
- The advertised price, storage limit, memory allocation and renewal price are current.
- You know who handles incidents such as node outages, failed updates and corrupted worlds.
Feed The Beast’s official OceanBlock 2 page identifies a hosting partner, but that listing does not establish a guaranteed price, capacity or support level. Treat any provider as a separate service decision and check its current OceanBlock 2 support before ordering.

Official memory guidance
| Published setting | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum memory | At least 4 GB | The official OceanBlock 2 listing’s floor for the current release. |
| Recommended memory | 6 GB | The official starting point; it is not a guaranteed player capacity. |
| Java | Java 21 | The runtime required by the current listed release c1. |
| Current server listing | 1.21.1, ID 100482 | The release identifier shown by FTB’s server-files browser at the time of publication. |
These numbers describe the pack’s published baseline, not a promise that a particular number of players will run smoothly. Actual usage changes with the number of people online, loaded chunks, simulation distance, automated machines, exploration and any other services sharing the machine. Reserve memory for the operating system and background processes instead of assigning all installed RAM to Java.
What to look for in a host machine
- CPU: prioritize strong single-thread performance. Modded Minecraft’s main server thread can become the bottleneck even when total CPU usage appears low.
- RAM capacity: install more physical memory than the heap allocation so the operating system and monitoring tools remain responsive. Expandability matters if your world grows.
- SSD storage: solid-state storage improves world saves, chunk generation and restarts. Keep free space for backups and temporary files, and consider endurance if the server writes continuously.
- Network upload: stable upstream bandwidth matters because every remote player receives world and entity updates from the server. Consistency is more useful than a high peak rate.
- Power and noise: a machine that runs continuously consumes electricity and may need cooling. Place it where fan noise and heat are acceptable.
- Upgradeability: replaceable RAM, storage and networking make it easier to respond to a growing world than a sealed, low-power device.
Prepare the operating environment
Use a supported 64-bit operating-system installation, an account that can write to the server directory, and enough storage for the pack, world, logs and multiple dated backups. Keep the server directory separate from personal documents so permissions and backup jobs are easy to manage. A wired network connection is preferable for a permanent host.

Install the exact OceanBlock 2 release
Version consistency is the most important setup rule. The server and every client must use the same OceanBlock 2 release, loader and configuration. Do not install one client build and then select a different server build because their names look similar.
- Install the FTB App. Open the launcher, locate OceanBlock 2 and select the exact release that your group has agreed to use. Record the release label so it can be checked later.
- Open FTB’s server-files browser. Select that same OceanBlock 2 release and your operating system, then download its server installer. For the current 1.21.1 listing, the browser identifies the server release as ID 100482.
- Create a dedicated directory. Make a new writable folder used only by this server. Avoid running the installer from a downloads folder that is routinely cleaned up.
- Run the installer in that directory. FTB’s generic installer is designed for FTB modpacks and can download the Java runtime it needs. Let it finish downloading every component before attempting a start.
If the installer stops partway through, do not copy files from a different pack version. Confirm the operating-system architecture, available disk space, permissions and the selected release, then run the matching installer again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfigure Java and perform the first start
Verify Java 21
The current listed OceanBlock 2 release requires Java 21. If the FTB installer supplied a runtime, use that runtime unless the release notes say otherwise. If you manage Java yourself, verify that the launch script resolves to Java 21 rather than an older system installation. A server that starts with the wrong major version may fail before the mods load or produce confusing loader errors.
Generate the initial files
- Start the generated server launch script once from the server directory.
- Wait for file generation to finish, then stop the process cleanly using the server’s stop command rather than closing the terminal.
- Open the generated EULA file and read it. Change the acceptance value only if you agree to the Minecraft license.
- Start the server again and watch the console for a completed startup message before attempting to connect.
A clean first stop ensures that configuration files and the world directory are written completely. Killing the process during generation can leave partial files that look like a mod problem on the next launch.

Set memory and server properties
Heap allocation
Edit the launch script generated by the installer and locate its memory flags. Use at least 4 GB as the published floor and begin with 6 GB, the official recommendation, while leaving headroom for the operating system. Increase the heap only after checking actual usage and pauses; assigning excessive memory can make garbage-collection pauses longer instead of fixing them.
Record the allocation in your setup notes so an update or a replacement machine does not silently revert to a smaller default. If the host runs backups, monitoring, a desktop session or other services, subtract their needs before choosing the Java heap.

World and access settings
Edit the generated server-properties file for your group:
- Choose a recognizable server name so players select the correct entry.
- Set the difficulty your group wants before inviting players.
- Choose view distance and simulation distance conservatively at first. Both increase work as more chunks and entities remain active.
- Enable a whitelist for a private server, then add each player’s Minecraft account before sending connection details.
- Keep the configured Minecraft port documented. Use the same value in the host firewall and router rule.
Change one setting at a time when diagnosing performance. That makes it possible to identify whether memory, simulation distance or another workload caused an improvement or regression.

Make the server reachable
Allow Java through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java server on the configured Minecraft port and the correct network profile. Restrict the rule to the private network when all players are local. For internet play, expose only the game port; do not disable the entire firewall as a shortcut.
Forward the port for remote friends
- Give the server machine a stable private IP address, either through a router reservation or a fixed local configuration.
- Forward the configured Minecraft port from the router to that private IP and the server’s listening port.
- Restart or reload the server if your router requires it, then test from outside your home network.
- Send friends the public address and port, not the machine’s private address. Keep the private address and router login private.
Test locally first. A local player connecting successfully proves that the server is running and listening; a remote test then isolates firewall, forwarding and internet-provider issues. Some connections use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. In that case, ask the internet provider about a public address or use a suitable relay or hosted server rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
Get friends connected without version errors
- Have every player install the FTB App and the identical OceanBlock 2 release selected for the server.
- Ask players to compare the complete pack version, not just the pack name. Loader versions and configuration files must also match.
- Distribute the server address only after the server has completed startup and the whitelist is configured.
- Have one player connect and verify movement, chunk loading and basic interaction before inviting the whole group.
A different pack release, loader or configuration can produce a mod-list mismatch or handshake error. Reinstalling the exact release is usually safer than copying individual mods between versions, because a configuration difference can be just as important as a missing file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates and safe recovery
Stop the server cleanly before every pack, loader or configuration update. Copy the world and configuration to a dated backup directory, and keep at least one backup off the host. A backup that remains on the same failing disk is not a complete recovery plan.
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop player activity.
- Use the server stop command and wait for the process to exit.
- Copy the world directory, server properties, whitelist, launch scripts and relevant configuration files to a dated location.
- Install the new server release in a separate directory rather than overwriting the working installation.
- Start the new copy and inspect the logs before allowing players to join.
- Test restoration by copying a backup into a separate test directory. Never experiment on the only live copy.
If an update causes corruption, crashes or changed behavior, stop the new instance and restore the dated backup before investigating further. Keep the previous working installation until the new one has survived a complete test.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The installer fails or the server exits immediately
- Confirm that the selected server release exactly matches the client release.
- Verify the operating-system architecture, write permissions and available storage.
- Check that Java 21 is being used for the current release.
- Review the installer output to ensure all files completed downloading.
- Run the installer in a clean, dedicated directory instead of mixing files from an earlier attempt.
Out-of-memory errors or long pauses
- Check the launch script’s heap values and compare them with the machine’s physical RAM.
- Leave operating-system headroom; do not allocate all installed memory to Java.
- Reduce view distance and simulation distance, especially while players are generating new terrain.
- Close competing workloads such as other game servers, heavy downloads or backups during play.
- Increase RAM only after measuring usage and confirming that the workload, rather than a misconfigured setting, is the cause.
Mod-list or handshake mismatch
- Compare the complete OceanBlock 2 release label on every client and the server.
- Compare loader and configuration versions.
- Reinstall the exact FTB App release if a player has manually changed files.
- Do not solve a mismatch by adding random mods from another release.
Friends cannot connect
- Connect from the host machine or the same local network to confirm the server is listening.
- Check the Java firewall rule and verify that it applies to the active network profile.
- Confirm that the router forwards the configured port to the server’s current private IP.
- Check whether the private IP changed after a reboot.
- Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a mobile connection.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT or an internet-provider restriction if local tests pass but outside connections fail.
Lag, tick delays or watchdog warnings
- Reduce concurrent chunk generation by limiting exploration while the server is busy.
- Lower simulation distance before lowering every other setting.
- Close competing workloads and check storage activity during saves.
- Inspect server logs for repeating errors, stalled saves or a particular area causing the slowdown.
- Make a backup before changing the pack or restoring an older world.
Rollback or corruption after an update
Stop the server, preserve the failed installation for log review, and restore the most recent dated backup in a separate directory first. Confirm that the restored copy starts and that players can load their bases before replacing the live instance.

Self-hosting or managed hosting: a practical choice
Choose self-hosting when you already have suitable hardware, want complete file and mod control, can maintain backups and firewall rules, and accept responsibility for power and network outages. Choose managed hosting when predictable administration, a control panel and data-center connectivity are worth the recurring fee and provider dependency.
Whichever model you choose, evaluate the same fundamentals: CPU single-thread performance, available memory, SSD behavior, upload stability, privacy, backup ownership, latency and who responds when the instance fails. A low monthly price is not useful if you cannot download your world or restore a backup.
