For the DarkGrissu edition of The Afterlife, the reliable setup is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server built from the project’s dedicated server-pack download for release 1.1.3. Install that server pack in a clean Forge server directory, accept the EULA, open the server’s configured port, and have every player use the identical 1.1.3 client profile. Do not use the similarly named DAQEM pack: it is a separate Minecraft 1.18.1 Fabric project and its files will not work with this server.

Identify the right Afterlife before downloading anything

“The Afterlife” is not a unique modpack name. This guide targets The Afterlife by DarkGrissu, listed on CurseForge for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. The current release identified for this setup is 1.1.3, released April 16, 2024. CurseForge also provides a separate file in its Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs category. That server-pack file is the correct starting point for a dedicated server.

CurseForge describes the pack as inspired by “Life in the woods,” “After Humans” and “Time.” It contains more than 200 mods spanning technology, exploration, adventure/RPG systems and multiplayer features. Expect a heavier server workload than a small vanilla or lightly modded world.

Do not confuse it with the DAQEM project

DAQEM’s Afterlife is a different project: its listed release is 1.1.2 for Minecraft 1.18.1 on Fabric, and it has its own Afterlife 1.1.2 Server Pack. A Fabric 1.18.1 server, its mods and its configuration cannot be substituted for DarkGrissu’s Forge 1.20.1 files. Check the author, Minecraft version, loader and release number on every download page before you install.

What you need for a playable server

  • A computer or hosted instance that can run a current 64-bit Java runtime compatible with Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • The Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server installer.
  • The DarkGrissu The Afterlife 1.1.3 server-pack archive from the project’s Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs entry.
  • Enough memory for the Java process, the operating system and any other services on the machine.
  • Firewall and router access if friends will connect to a server running at home.
  • A backup location for the world, configuration and server files.

The pack author does not publish a universal minimum server specification. Hosting companies therefore provide useful planning figures, but they are not an official requirement or an independent benchmark.

Published source Memory guidance Other published specification How to interpret it
CreeperHost 4,500 MB minimum 4 × 4.5 GHz CPU; 40 GB SSD Provider-specific starting guidance for its advertised Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge Afterlife setup; observed October 14, 2026.
StickyPiston 7 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended for more players and chunks Not included in the cited listing Provider guidance on an older Afterlife page; treat it as planning advice rather than a measured requirement.

Start with the capacity your host can sustain while leaving operating-system headroom. If the server runs out of memory, increasing the Java allocation helps only when the machine has that memory available; it cannot compensate for an undersized host or excessive simultaneous exploration.

Install the DarkGrissu server pack step by step

1. Verify the project and release

  1. Open the CurseForge project whose author is DarkGrissu.
  2. Confirm that the project page says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
  3. In the files list, select release 1.1.3, released April 16, 2024.
  4. Make sure the download is under Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs, not merely the ordinary client profile.

Save the archive somewhere you can identify later. Keeping the downloaded archive alongside your server backups makes it easier to rebuild the installation after a disk failure.

2. Create an empty server directory

Make a new directory dedicated to this server. Do not install it inside an existing vanilla world, another modpack, or the DAQEM 1.18.1 Fabric server. A clean directory prevents old mods, libraries and configuration files from being loaded accidentally.

3. Install Forge 1.20.1

Run the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server installer and choose the empty directory as the server location. The installer creates the Forge libraries, launch files and the server scripts used for later starts. Use a 64-bit Java runtime compatible with Minecraft 1.20.1, and verify that the installer is using that runtime rather than an older 32-bit Java installation.

When installation finishes, inspect the directory before adding the pack. You should see Forge-generated files and scripts, not a pre-existing world copied from another server.

4. Copy in the server-pack contents

Extract the DarkGrissu 1.1.3 server-pack archive directly into the Forge server directory. Allow the archive’s folders and files to merge with the Forge installation. Do not copy a player’s entire CurseForge client instance blindly: client-only launchers, caches and unrelated profiles can introduce missing dependencies or crash the server.

If the archive includes its own launch instructions, follow those instructions for this release. Keep the directory structure intact; moving a mod, configuration folder or script into a different location can make Forge report missing files.

5. Perform the first launch

Run the Forge-generated server script once. The first launch normally stops while the server creates its configuration and world directories and presents the EULA requirement. Open the generated eula.txt, read Mojang’s terms, and change the setting to eula=true only if you agree to them.

Start the same Forge server script again. Let the process finish generating configuration files before you connect. The first world creation can take longer than later starts because the pack must load a large mod set and create its data folders.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

6. Set the basic server properties

Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. In server.properties, review the world name, game mode, difficulty, view distance, simulation distance and the server port. Keep the port value consistent with your firewall and router rules. If you want a private world, enable the whitelist and add each player through the server console or the in-game operator controls.

Do not change several gameplay and mod settings at once. Make one controlled change, restart, and check the log so you can identify which setting caused a problem.

Make the server reachable by friends

Home-hosted server

  1. Give the Java process permission through the operating system’s firewall when prompted, or create an inbound rule for the server’s configured TCP port.
  2. On the home router, forward that same port to the local IP address of the computer running Forge. Reserve that computer’s local address so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot.
  3. From outside your home network, test the public address with a second connection or ask a friend to test it. A connection test from the hosting computer itself can succeed even when port forwarding is wrong.
  4. Send friends the public address and port shown by your router or internet provider. Never publish your home address in a public forum.

Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. In that case, use a managed host or a private networking solution rather than repeatedly changing the Forge configuration.

Managed host

A managed host supplies the public address and handles the machine, firewall and port exposure. Confirm that the provider supports Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the DarkGrissu 1.1.3 server pack before paying. “Afterlife” without an author or version may refer to the older DAQEM project.

Install the matching client for every player

Each player must install The Afterlife 1.1.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. The server and every client need the same pack release, Minecraft version, loader and effective configuration. A player who installs the 1.18.1 Fabric DAQEM pack, a different DarkGrissu release, or a manually altered mod list is not using a compatible client.

  • Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
  • Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
  • The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
  1. In the player’s launcher, create or select the DarkGrissu profile for release 1.1.3.
  2. Confirm that the profile launches Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, not Fabric or a different Forge build.
  3. Let the launcher finish downloading all mods and dependencies before attempting to join.
  4. Use the server’s public address, or its local address when testing from the same network.
  5. If the server is private, have an administrator add the player’s exact in-game name to the whitelist.

Do not solve a join error by downloading random replacement mods. First compare the client and server pack archives, loader versions and configuration changes. A missing-mod or registry error usually indicates that one side is not the same build, although the exact message depends on the mod and the point at which the connection fails.

How much RAM does an Afterlife server need?

There is no author-published minimum for DarkGrissu’s pack. The two provider figures above are starting points from their own hosting pages, not a controlled test of your player count, world seed or exploration pattern. A small private group may run acceptably at a lower load than a group generating new terrain continuously, while a heavily explored world can need more headroom even with few players online.

Plan memory around the workload

  • Leave memory for the operating system, Java overhead and any control panel, backup job or monitoring service.
  • Generating new chunks is more demanding than staying in an already generated base area.
  • More simultaneous players increase entity ticking, chunk loading and network traffic.
  • Large view and simulation distances increase the amount of active world data.
  • Keep a reserve rather than assigning every megabyte on the machine to Java; an operating system under memory pressure can make saves and restarts unreliable.

Watch the server log and host metrics over several play sessions. A recurring out-of-memory termination is evidence that the current allocation or host is insufficient; a single long startup is not, by itself, a benchmark.

Managed-hosting options and what they actually provide

Provider Advertised Afterlife support Useful features mentioned Important scope
CreeperHost Names The Afterlife as a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge pack Automated CurseForge setup; publishes the 4,500 MB starting figure, CPU and SSD details listed above Verify that the order is for DarkGrissu release 1.1.3 before deployment.
StickyPiston Advertises a pre-installed Afterlife server Multicraft controls, world uploads, whitelist management and configuration editing The cited page concerns the older DAQEM Afterlife project, so confirm 1.20.1 Forge availability rather than assuming compatibility.
VeryGames Advertises one-click or hosted installation Installation convenience The cited material exposes less version and resource detail; verify the exact pack and release with support.
BoxToPlay Advertises one-click or hosted installation Installation convenience The cited material exposes less version and resource detail; verify the exact pack and release with support.

Managed hosting removes Java installation, port forwarding and much of the backup administration, but you still need to choose the right pack file and keep clients synchronized. Ask whether the host lets you upload the official server pack, edit server.properties, download world backups and roll back an update.

Troubleshoot the problems players report most often

“I cannot find the server files”

Return to the DarkGrissu project’s files and select the entry under Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs. An ordinary client download is not a substitute for a dedicated server pack. If no server-pack entry appears for the release you selected, stop and verify that you are on the correct author and Minecraft version before improvising.

The server closes during startup

  • Check that the Forge installer and the server pack both target Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • Confirm that the Java runtime is 64-bit and compatible with that Minecraft release.
  • Read the first error and its mod identifier in the log rather than relying on the final generic shutdown line.
  • Remove files added from another pack, especially Fabric mods or DAQEM 1.18.1 content, and restore the clean server-pack directory.
  • Make sure the host has free disk space for libraries, configuration and world generation.

Friends receive a missing-mod or registry error

Compare author, release, Minecraft version and loader on the client and server. Confirm that both sides use DarkGrissu 1.1.3 and that nobody has removed, replaced or added a mod. Check configuration files as well: some mods encode registry data or gameplay settings that must match. These errors are compatibility symptoms; the exact wording varies by the mod that detects the mismatch.

The server is running but nobody can join

  1. Check the server console for a completed startup message and verify that it has not stopped at the EULA prompt.
  2. Confirm that friends are using the public address, while local players use the correct local address when appropriate.
  3. Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding rule against the port in server.properties.
  4. Verify that the whitelist contains each player’s exact in-game name.
  5. Test from a different network; a local test cannot prove that the public route is open.

World generation is slow, saves take a long time, or the server runs out of memory

  • Reduce simultaneous exploration so fewer players generate new chunks at once.
  • Lower view distance and simulation distance in the server properties, then restart cleanly.
  • Stop unrelated services on the host and check whether scheduled backups overlap with heavy play.
  • Increase the Java allocation only when the machine has unused memory; otherwise move to a larger host.
  • Keep a backup before changing memory or world settings so you can recover from an interrupted save.

Provider memory figures are not performance guarantees. Record when lag occurs, how many players are online and whether new terrain is loading before deciding which change to make.

A client stutters even though the server is healthy

Separate client rendering problems from server tick problems. Check the launcher’s Java settings, graphics options, allocated client memory and background applications. StickyPiston publishes Java-argument advice for CurseForge client lag, but those arguments are vendor guidance and should be validated against the player’s Java version and launcher. Do not copy server memory settings into the client without checking available system RAM.

Backups, updates and safe maintenance

Back up before every change

  1. Tell players to disconnect and stop the server through its normal console command or control-panel stop action.
  2. Wait until the process exits completely; copying a live world can capture partially written region files.
  3. Copy the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and ban files, the config directory, and any pack-specific data that the server generates.
  4. Store at least one copy outside the server machine and label it with the pack release and date.
  5. Periodically restore a backup to a separate test directory so you know the archive is usable.

Update in a controlled sequence

Read the release notes for the new pack before changing anything. Stop the live server, save the old server directory and world, install the new server-pack files in a duplicate directory, and test with a copy of the world. Have one client update first and check that it can connect before asking the entire group to change profiles. Never overwrite the only working installation while testing.

Keep a rollback plan

Retain the previous server pack, Forge libraries and a known-good world backup until the new release has survived normal play. If a mod update causes crashes or changed world behavior, stop the test server and restore the complete matching set rather than mixing new mods with old configuration.

Quick launch checklist

  • Project author: DarkGrissu.
  • Pack release: The Afterlife 1.1.3.
  • Minecraft: 1.20.1.
  • Loader: Forge.
  • Download type: the project’s Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs entry.
  • Server directory: empty before Forge installation.
  • EULA: reviewed and accepted before setting eula=true.
  • Networking: firewall and router rules match the configured server port.
  • Players: the same release, Minecraft version, loader and effective configuration.
  • Safety: a clean stop and verified backup before updates or major configuration changes.

Following those checks gives friends a consistent DarkGrissu 1.20.1 Forge environment and avoids the most damaging mistake: combining it with the unrelated DAQEM 1.18.1 Fabric Afterlife files.
