A managed host can install the CurseForge pack from its control panel; self-hosting requires the official server-pack download rather than a copied client instance. Published hosting guidance places initial memory planning between 6GB and 12GB, with the right point determined by players, view distance, world generation and entity or automation load.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What the server must match
The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey is an Apotheotic_Studios modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 using Forge. CurseForge lists version 5.9 as the current release and also lists a corresponding v5.9_Server file. Treat those values as a single compatibility set: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, the exact pack release and its server package must agree.

CurseForge and provider pages may display newer pack releases after you read this guide. Always check the release selector immediately before installing, then use that same release everywhere. The v5.9 and 1.20.1 details above describe the listing cited for this guide, not a guarantee that a later release will retain the same files.
Choose managed hosting or self-hosting
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host supplies a control panel, the machine, network connection and an installer. The main advantage is removing manual Forge and pack-file assembly. You still have to select the correct release, allocate enough memory and make sure every client uses the same files. Provider features, locations, prices and resource limits vary, so verify the current plan rather than relying on an old advertisement.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over the computer and files but makes you responsible for operating-system updates, access control, backups, network reachability and recovery. The evidence available for this pack does not establish an official player cap, a universal firewall recipe or an independent performance benchmark. Do not infer those values from the pack’s download count or from another modpack.
| Decision factor | Managed panel | Self-hosted machine |
|---|---|---|
| Installation work | Search for the pack in a CurseForge or modpack installer and deploy it. | Download the official server pack, unpack it correctly and operate the Forge server files. |
| Control | Provider controls much of the platform; you use the panel and available settings. | You control the operating system, files and maintenance schedule. |
| Scaling headroom | Choose a plan with more memory or CPU capacity when the panel permits. | Add hardware or move the installation yourself. |
| Backups and DDoS protection | May be offered as provider features; confirm retention, frequency and scope. | You must implement and test your own backup and network protections. |
| Cost | Recurring plan charge; current prices are provider- and location-specific. | Hardware, electricity, bandwidth and administration are your costs. |
Install it with a managed host
PLAYNHOST documents the panel workflow below. Other providers may use different labels, but the required choices are the same: CurseForge, the pack name and the matching Minecraft release.
- Order a Minecraft server plan. Select a plan whose memory is appropriate for your expected world and player load, not merely the smallest plan shown.
- Open the modpack installer. In the panel, open the Modpacks tab.
- Choose CurseForge. Select CurseForge as the pack source rather than installing a generic Forge server.
- Search for the exact title. Enter The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey and verify that the result is the Apotheotic_Studios pack.
- Select Minecraft 1.20.1. If the installer presents several versions, do not choose by pack name alone; select the 1.20.1 release that matches your clients.
- Choose the pack release. Confirm the release number, such as v5.9 when that is the current listing, before starting installation.
- Install and wait for startup. Let the panel download and configure the files. Do not interrupt the process while it is still unpacking or generating its initial configuration.
- Read the server address from the panel. Share that address only after the console shows a completed startup. Players should install the identical pack release, Minecraft version and Forge-based profile before connecting.
If a panel offers both a client modpack and a server installation choice, select the server option. A client profile is not a substitute for server files, even when both options carry the same pack name.
Self-host it with the official server pack
Download the matching package
Use the server-pack release listed with the pack on CurseForge. The current listing cited here includes a v5.9_Server file; older official entries use names such as v5.2_SERVER_TAD.zip. The filename is an identifier, not permission to mix releases. Download the server package whose version exactly matches the client pack you intend to run.

Prepare a clean server directory
- Create a new, dedicated directory for this server. Keeping it separate from other Minecraft worlds prevents files from unrelated packs being loaded accidentally.
- Unpack the official server ZIP into that directory, preserving its folders and overrides.
- Use the Forge and Minecraft versions specified by the selected pack release. Do not replace them with a newer loader simply because one is available.
- Follow the launcher or startup files included with that server package. The exact filenames can differ between releases, so do not invent a command by copying one from another pack.
- Start once to let the server create its configuration and world files, then stop it cleanly before making configuration changes or taking a baseline backup.
Modpacks.ch’s setup guidance gives the critical warning: “Do not upload the ordinary client folder blindly.” A client instance can contain client-only configuration, launcher metadata or a layout that does not provide the intended server files. Starting from the official server ZIP is the safer path.
Keep the four version components aligned
- Record the pack release installed on the server.
- Record Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge build selected by that release.
- Install the same pack release on every player’s client.
- When updating, replace or update the server and clients as one planned change, then test the world before inviting players back.
How much RAM does it need?
There is no single official memory requirement or player-capacity number for this pack. Published provider guidance is spread across a practical range:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Published guidance | What it says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 6GB | PLAYNHOST describes 6GB as a starting plan. | A possible starting point for a small, lightly loaded server; monitor it rather than treating it as a guaranteed capacity. |
| 10GB or more | Game Host Bros recommends 10GB+ and describes that as the minimum for its plan. | Use more headroom when several players explore simultaneously or the world has heavier generation and automation activity. |
| 12GB | WinterNode recommends 12GB and describes 6–12GB as typical depending on player count and view distance. | A conservative target when you expect longer sessions, higher view distance or more entities. |
Start from the lowest published figure that fits your expected use, then move upward when monitoring shows sustained memory pressure, long pauses or lag during exploration. RAM alone cannot fix a CPU-bound tick, an overloaded storage device or a poorly placed automation system.
Factors that move you toward the high end
- Concurrent players: More players create more active chunks, inventories, entities and scheduled work.
- View and simulation distance: Larger distances keep more terrain and entities active around each player.
- World generation: First-time exploration can be expensive because new terrain and structures must be generated and saved.
- Entities and automation: Farms, machines, transport systems and dense mobs add recurring work even when players remain in one area.
No published source establishes a guaranteed number of players for 6GB, 10GB or 12GB. Treat these as planning points, not promises.

Reduce exploration-time lag
Game Host Bros’ hosting guidance recommends pre-generating chunks. The purpose is to perform terrain generation before players explore the area, reducing the burst of work that otherwise occurs during live travel. Choose a pre-generation method compatible with the pack and run it during a maintenance window; the available guidance does not specify a particular mod, command or radius, so do not assume one without checking the release’s included documentation.
- Begin with a modest view distance and raise it only after observing stable performance.
- Ask players to avoid simultaneous long-distance exploration while the server is still settling after startup.
- Keep a backup before changing world-generation or performance settings.
- Watch both memory use and tick responsiveness; allocating more RAM is not a substitute for investigating a CPU or storage bottleneck.
Version and connection checklist

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Server and clients use The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey, not a similarly named pack.
- All installations target Minecraft 1.20.1.
- All installations use Forge.
- The pack release number is identical on server and every client.
- A self-hosted installation came from the corresponding official server-pack file, not an ordinary client folder.
- The server has completed startup and you are sharing its current address.
- Players close or update conflicting profiles before trying to connect.
When a player receives a mod-list mismatch, stop and compare these values first. Adding a random missing mod or copying files from another profile can create a second mismatch and make recovery harder.

The panel cannot find the pack
Check the spelling of the full title and select CurseForge as the source. If the panel offers only a generic Forge installer, it is not installing the complete pack; use a provider’s supported modpack workflow or self-host the official server package instead.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

The server starts, but clients are rejected
Compare the pack release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both sides. A newer client paired with an older server pack, or the reverse, is not an acceptable combination. Reinstall the exact same release rather than trying to bypass the mismatch.
The self-hosted server behaves unlike the pack
Confirm that you used the _Server ZIP and preserved its directory structure and overrides. If you uploaded a client folder, create a clean directory and repeat the installation from the official server package. Do not merge that client folder into the server as a shortcut.
Players report lag during travel
Check whether the lag coincides with unexplored terrain, high view distance or a sudden increase in entities and automation. Lower view distance temporarily, avoid several players exploring new areas at once and consider pre-generating chunks during a maintenance period. Increase memory only when monitoring indicates that memory is the limiting resource.
The server runs out of headroom as the community grows
Record concurrent players, view distance and the locations of heavy farms or machines. Move from a 6GB starting allocation toward 10GB+ or 12GB when those conditions justify it, and verify that the host or machine also has adequate CPU and storage capacity. There is no published universal threshold, so make the change from observed load rather than a nominal player count.

Provider claims to verify before paying
Several providers advertise one-click deployment, but their claims are not independent benchmarks. Confirm current terms, hardware, region, backup retention and resource policy directly in the plan you are ordering.

| Provider claim in published guidance | Details stated | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WinterNode | One-click installation; recommends 12GB; describes 6–12GB as typical depending on player count and view distance. | Which CPU, storage and locations are included, and whether memory is dedicated. |
| PLAYNHOST | Panel flow through Modpacks → CurseForge; states 6GB as a starting point. | Whether the selected release is available, how backups work and what upgrade options cost. |
| Game Host Bros | One-click deployment; recommends 10GB+ and states that as its plan minimum; recommends pre-generating chunks. | How much CPU headroom and storage performance the plan provides under load. |
| CreeperHost | One-click CurseForge setup, DDoS protection and backup features are advertised. | Protection scope, backup frequency, restore process, retention and excluded events. |
Page captures from 2026 cite more than 361,000 downloads on WinterNode’s page and 370,300 installs on Game Host Bros’ page. Those figures indicate interest in the pack on those pages; they are not measurements of server capacity or performance.
Safe operating routine
Before inviting players
- Start the server once and confirm it reaches a completed startup state.
- Connect with one client using the exact matching pack profile.
- Take a baseline backup after the world is created and the installation is known to work.
- Write down the installed pack release, Minecraft version, Forge version and server address.
Before an update
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the world, configuration and server directory according to your hosting method.
- Confirm the new CurseForge release and its matching server package.
- Update the server and distribute the same client release.
- Start the server without players first, inspect the console for errors and test a client connection.
When changing providers
Install the target release on the new host before transferring the world. Stop the old server, make a final backup, copy the world and relevant configuration using the destination provider’s documented method, then test with one player. Never run two writable copies of the same world at the same time; that can create divergent saves that cannot be safely merged.
Bottom line
Use a managed CurseForge installer if you want the shortest path: choose The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey, Minecraft 1.20.1 and the exact pack release, then share the address after startup. For self-hosting, download the matching official _Server package and keep the server and every client identical. Plan between 6GB and 12GB of RAM, starting from your player count and view distance and moving higher when world generation, entities or automation demand it.
