Coolify lets you run a self-hosted application platform on your own VPS. After installation, its web dashboard can connect Git repositories, build and deploy applications, route domains through Traefik, issue SSL certificates, and create databases without requiring a separate hosting control panel. For a dependable first server, use a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPS with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and a 40–60 GB SSD, then point your domain and wildcard DNS record to the server before installing Coolify.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Coolify, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
What Coolify does on a VPS
Coolify is an open-source, self-hosted platform-as-a-service. Instead of sending your code to a vendor-operated platform, you install Coolify on a VPS that you control. The VPS supplies the CPU, memory, storage and network address; Coolify supplies the deployment dashboard and the services around your applications.

- Application deployments: connect a Git repository, select a branch or revision, and let Coolify build and run the project.
- Web routing: Coolify deployments commonly use Traefik as the reverse proxy for hostnames, routing and SSL.
- Build support: projects may be built with Nixpacks, while Docker-based workflows are also supported.
- Databases: the dashboard includes one-click database options, subject to the resources and storage available on your VPS.
- Self-management: you remain responsible for the operating system, firewall, backups, upgrades, DNS and the underlying VPS.
This makes Coolify useful when you want a Heroku-style deployment workflow but need control over the server and data. It is not a managed VPS: a failed disk, exhausted memory or incorrectly configured firewall is still your problem to diagnose.
Choose a VPS that can handle Coolify and your workloads
The figures published for Coolify differ depending on whether they describe the platform alone or a practical production setup. The installation guide gives a small footprint for running Coolify itself, while the troubleshooting documentation sets a larger disk floor. Builds and databases can require substantially more resources than an idle dashboard.

| Resource | Published figure or guidance | How to use it when choosing a VPS |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 2 CPU cores in the Coolify installation quick summary | Use 2 vCPUs as the floor. Add CPU capacity when several builds may run at once. |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM to run Coolify itself | Use 4 GB RAM for multiple applications, concurrent builds, Java or large JavaScript builds, or databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB. The 4 GB recommendation comes from third-party deployment guides rather than an official Coolify limit. |
| Disk for installation | 10 GB in the installation quick summary | This describes Coolify alone and is too tight for a growing host. |
| Disk floor in troubleshooting guidance | 30 GB total disk and 20 GB available space | Treat this as the more practical minimum before adding application data, images or databases. |
| Practical starting plan | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40–60 GB SSD | This is a planning recommendation synthesized from the figures above, not an official Coolify specification. |
Docker images, build caches, container logs and database volumes continue consuming disk after installation. A VPS that passes the first setup can still fail later when a cache or database fills the filesystem, so leave headroom and monitor storage from the beginning.
Builds are often the limiting factor. A running application may be comfortable on a small instance while its build briefly consumes much more CPU and memory. One deployment guide reports builds failing on a 1 GB instance. If builds are killed, increase memory before changing application code.
Prepare the operating system and access
Start with a fresh server
Create a new VPS rather than installing Coolify over an existing web-hosting control panel. Existing reverse proxies, Docker installations, firewall rules and occupied ports can conflict with the components Coolify needs. Keep the server dedicated to Coolify until you understand its resource and networking requirements.
Use an LTS Ubuntu release
The official installation guidance recommends an Ubuntu LTS release and names Ubuntu 24.04 as an example. Non-LTS releases can behave differently; if the quick installer fails on your image, use the manual installation method described in the current documentation. Third-party guides mention Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04, but those older references should not override the current official guidance. Debian 12 is mentioned by some third-party material, yet its support was not confirmed in the official pages available for this guide, so do not assume it is supported without checking the current requirements.
Provide administrative SSH access
You need SSH access as root or as a user with sudo privileges. Record the server’s public IPv4 address, confirm that you can log in, and keep a second terminal available for checking logs or connectivity while you work in the dashboard.

Meet the Docker requirement
Connected servers require Docker Engine 24 or later. The installer normally handles Docker and the other dependencies. If installation stops at the Docker step on a non-LTS Ubuntu system, the official troubleshooting guidance recommends installing Docker 24 or newer manually and then retrying the Coolify installation.

Point a domain at the VPS
Use a domain you control. Create an address for the Coolify host and a wildcard DNS record such as *.apps.example.com that points to the VPS IP. A wildcard lets individual applications receive their own subdomain without creating a new DNS record for every deployment. DNS changes may take time to propagate, so configure them before the first deployment.
Allow the required ports
| Port | Purpose in the setup |
|---|---|
| 22 | SSH administration; keep it restricted to trusted addresses where your VPS provider allows that. |
| 80 | HTTP traffic and certificate or redirect handling. |
| 443 | HTTPS traffic for deployed applications. |
| 8000 | Coolify connectivity or dashboard access required by the installation guidance. |
| 6001 and 6002 | Additional ports listed by one deployment guide; verify whether your chosen release and topology require them. |
Coolify does not configure a firewall for you. Set rules in the VPS provider’s network firewall and on the server, allowing only the ports your installation needs. Check the current Coolify documentation for any release-specific port changes before locking the policy.
Install Coolify on the VPS
- Create the VPS: choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40–60 GB SSD for a small multi-application host.
- Record the public IP: you will use it for DNS and connectivity checks.
- Configure DNS: point your main host record and wildcard subdomain record at that IP.
- Open the firewall: allow SSH, 80, 443 and 8000, plus 6001 and 6002 only if your current deployment requires them.
- Connect over SSH: log in as root or use a sudo-capable account on the fresh server.
- Run the current official installer: copy the single-install command from Coolify’s live installation guide and execute it with the required root privileges. Do not rely on a command copied from an old tutorial; installer flags and supported operating systems can change.
- Let the installer finish: it sets up Docker, the reverse proxy and Coolify’s dependencies. Keep the SSH session open until it reports completion or an actionable error.
- Open the dashboard: visit the host address and complete the initial account and instance configuration using the hostname you prepared.
The exact installer command is intentionally version-sensitive. The official guide is the authoritative place to copy it from; pasting a reconstructed command can install an incompatible release or omit a required option.
Complete the first dashboard setup
Secure the administrator account
Create a unique administrator password and store it in a password manager. Use SSH keys rather than password-only server access where your provider supports them, and restrict SSH at the firewall when practical. Coolify’s dashboard is an administrative surface: exposing it broadly increases the impact of a stolen credential.

Register the server and verify connectivity
Confirm that the server appears as connected in Coolify and that the Docker engine is available. If the connection fails, check that Docker Engine is version 24 or newer, that SSH access works with the account you supplied, and that the VPS firewall permits the required ports.
Set the instance and application domains
Use the domain you control for the Coolify host and reserve the wildcard subdomain for deployed applications. Traefik uses the hostnames to route requests to the correct container and to manage SSL for those routes. A DNS record that points to an old IP will produce certificate or routing failures even when the application itself is healthy.
Deploy a website or application from Git
- Open the resource creation flow: choose an application deployment and select the connected server.
- Connect the Git provider or repository: grant only the repository access the deployment needs.
- Select the repository and branch: use a stable production branch for the first deployment.
- Choose the build method: allow Nixpacks to detect a supported project or provide the project’s Docker configuration when you need deterministic build steps.
- Define runtime settings: add environment variables, the application port and any start command required by the project. Keep secrets in Coolify’s environment settings rather than committing them to Git.
- Assign the public domain: enter the application hostname under the wildcard domain you configured.
- Deploy: start the build and watch the build and runtime logs. A successful build is not enough; confirm that the container remains running and answers on the expected port.
- Test HTTPS: open the assigned hostname over HTTPS and check static files, server-side routes, API calls and any webhook callbacks.
Nixpacks is convenient for conventional language projects, while a Dockerfile gives you explicit control over operating-system packages, build stages and the final command. Whichever method you choose, make the listening port and required environment variables match the values configured in Coolify; a process bound only to localhost inside the container will not be reachable through Traefik.
Add a database and connect it safely
Coolify provides one-click database options, including common engines such as PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB. Create the database on the same server only when its storage, memory and backup requirements fit the VPS. Databases are persistent state, unlike a disposable application container.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose the database resource from Coolify’s database options.
- Select a supported engine and a persistent storage volume.
- Set a strong database password and restrict network exposure to the application that needs it.
- Wait for the database to report healthy before deploying the application that depends on it.
- Copy the internal connection details into the application’s environment variables rather than publishing the database port to the internet.
- Test migrations and a read/write operation before sending production traffic.
A database volume consumes disk continuously, and build caches or Docker images can compete with it for the same filesystem. Set a storage alert and maintain an off-server backup plan; a second container on the same VPS is not a backup against disk loss.

Understand routing, SSL and domains
Coolify deployments commonly use Traefik for reverse-proxy routing and SSL. Traefik receives the request for an application hostname, selects the matching service and terminates HTTPS. The arrangement works only when DNS points the hostname to the VPS and ports 80 and 443 are reachable from the internet.
- Use one hostname per public application when possible; it keeps routing rules and certificate coverage clear.
- Keep internal services private unless an application genuinely needs public access.
- After changing a DNS record, verify both DNS resolution and the VPS firewall before troubleshooting the container.
- When HTTPS fails, check the hostname spelling, wildcard record, port 80 reachability and Traefik logs before rebuilding the application.
Plan capacity as the host grows
When 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM are enough
That starting size suits a small number of modest websites or APIs with light traffic, provided builds are infrequent and databases are small. Schedule builds one at a time when possible and remove unused images and caches before disk usage becomes critical.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When to add memory
Increase RAM for several simultaneous builds, Java projects, large JavaScript toolchains, or a database serving meaningful production traffic. Repeated out-of-memory build failures are a capacity signal, not a routing problem.
When to add CPU
Additional vCPUs shorten compile and image-build times and prevent one build from starving running services. CPU saturation during builds is expected; sustained saturation during normal traffic indicates that the VPS or application needs scaling.
When to add disk
Expand storage before Docker images, logs or database volumes approach the filesystem limit. The troubleshooting guidance’s 30 GB total and 20 GB available figures are a floor, not a long-term capacity plan. A 40–60 GB SSD is a safer starting point, but retention policies and database growth determine the real requirement.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The installer fails while installing Docker
Confirm that the OS is an Ubuntu LTS release and that the server is fresh. On a non-LTS image, install Docker Engine 24 or newer manually as directed by the official troubleshooting documentation, then rerun the Coolify installation. Remove conflicting Docker or hosting-panel components only after taking any backups you need.
The dashboard or application cannot be reached
Check the VPS provider firewall, the server firewall and the DNS record independently. Ports 80, 443 and 8000 must be reachable for the baseline setup. If DNS still resolves to a previous address, no change inside Coolify will correct the route.
HTTPS certificates do not issue
Verify that the hostname resolves to the VPS, port 80 is open for certificate validation, and no other proxy is answering for the domain. Confirm the Traefik route after DNS has propagated.
A build runs out of memory or is killed
Inspect the build log and VPS memory usage. A 1 GB instance is particularly prone to build failure; move to at least 4 GB for multiple applications or heavy toolchains, and avoid running several builds concurrently.
The application builds but returns a gateway error
Check the process’s listening address and port, the start command, required environment variables and container health. The port exposed by the application must match the port configured for the Coolify resource and Traefik route.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a current Ubuntu LTS image and apply operating-system security updates.
- Restrict SSH access and prefer keys over passwords.
- Expose only the ports required by Coolify and your applications.
- Use separate secrets for each application and database; do not commit them to Git.
- Back up database data and test restoring it on a separate system.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk and container health, especially during builds.
- Keep the Coolify and Docker versions aligned with the current official documentation before upgrading.
- Test one deployment after an upgrade before moving every application to the new version.
Quick preflight checklist
- Fresh Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPS created.
- At least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40–60 GB SSD selected for a small multi-app host.
- Root or sudo SSH access verified.
- Domain and wildcard DNS records pointed at the VPS IP.
- Ports 80, 443 and 8000 opened; 6001 and 6002 checked against the current topology.
- Docker Engine 24 or newer available if the installer does not provide it.
- Current official Coolify installer copied directly from the live documentation.
- Git repository, environment variables, application port and production hostname prepared.
- Database backups and disk monitoring arranged before storing important data.
Bottom line
Coolify is a practical way to host websites, APIs and databases on a VPS when you want a graphical deployment workflow without surrendering control of the server. Start with more than the bare installation minimum: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40–60 GB of SSD provides room for ordinary builds and a few services. Prepare DNS and firewall rules first, install using the current official command, then treat memory, disk, backups and upgrades as ongoing operations rather than one-time setup tasks.
