The quickest route is to replay the music and run Shazam while the game, video, or replay is audible. If you only remember the melody, use Google’s mobile song search to hum, whistle, or sing for about 10–15 seconds; SoundHound offers a similar hum-search option. If you know the game and scene, search its soundtrack, credits, and location-specific music, then verify any app result against a reliable release or credit.
No recognition service is guaranteed to identify every game cue. Treat a match as a candidate, especially when the audio is buried under dialogue, effects, a remix, a regional version, or an unreleased in-game score.

Choose the method that matches what you still have
Your evidence determines the best first attempt. Do not start by guessing composers if you can still replay the sound.

Use more than one route when the first result is uncertain. Audio recognition and game-context searching solve different parts of the problem: one hears a recording, while the other narrows a catalog.

Identify music that is playing with Shazam
Start recognition while the game audio is clear
- Pause dialogue or effects if the game allows it, then replay the longest clean passage you can.
- Open Shazam and start recognition while the music is audible. Apple documents recognition of audio playing in another app on iPhone, iPad, and Android, so the game or video can remain the source.
- Wait for the result, and save it in the Shazam app. Record the displayed title, artist, and any album or release information before closing the source.
- Replay the same section and compare the candidate’s recording, tempo, vocalist, and instrumentation with what you heard.
A short, clean chorus or distinctive instrumental phrase is usually more useful than a passage covered by speech. There is no universal minimum clip length established for game music, so retry with a longer section rather than assuming a fixed number of seconds will work.
iPhone and iPad routes
Apple’s current support instructions describe several entry points, including the Shazam app, Control Center recognition, and Siri. The exact label and location can change with iOS or iPadOS updates. If the Control Center control is not present, add the music-recognition control in Control Center settings, or open the Shazam app directly. You can also ask Siri a question such as “What song is this?” while the music is playing.
Android routes
On Android, Apple documents Quick Settings, notification access, and Pop-up Shazam in addition to the app itself. Enable the route you prefer, start recognition, and return to the game or video. Some Android versions require notification or overlay permission for those options; if a control does not appear, use the main app instead and follow the current on-screen permission instructions.
Using one device or two
When the game or video is on the same phone, Shazam’s documented “another app” recognition can listen without a second device. For a console, television, or computer, let the phone’s microphone hear the speakers, or play the recording through headphones placed near the phone’s microphone. Keep the phone away from fan noise and conversation. A second device is convenient, not a requirement.

Auto Shazam for a long session
Auto Shazam can keep listening while you move through a game or video. It is useful when the cue may return later, but it can collect several unrelated tracks. Review the saved results afterward and match their timestamps or scene context to the game. Stop Auto Shazam when you are finished so it does not continue listening unintentionally.
What Apple says about captured audio
Apple states that Shazam does not record or store the audio it detects and that Apple has no access to audio captured on the device. That is Apple’s description of its service; it does not establish how every operating-system permission, recording app, or third-party tool behaves. Check the current privacy and permission screens on your device.
Search a remembered melody with Google
Use the mobile song-search feature
- Open Google Search or the Google app on a phone.
- Choose the song-search option, then hum, whistle, or sing the melody.
- Provide roughly 10–15 seconds of the clearest part you remember. Keep a steady tempo and use the contour of the tune rather than speaking its name.
- Review the likely matches. Compare the melody, not just the title, with the scene you remember.
Google describes converting a hummed melody into a number-based sequence and comparing it with song matches. Its product explanation is designed to find an earworm, so an instrumental game cue can still produce a useful lead, but the result remains a likelihood rather than an identification certificate.

Look for the same melodic intervals, rhythm, and repeated motif. A result can be musically similar while belonging to another recording, a cover, or a song that influenced the game cue. Open the candidate and listen to a section that contains the remembered phrase before searching for game credits.

Language and availability caveat
Google’s product post, dated October 15, 2020, described English availability on iOS and more than 20 languages on Android at that time. Those details are historical and may not describe the current app or your region. If the song-search control is absent, update the app, try the Google app rather than a browser, or use SoundHound’s documented hum-search route.
Try SoundHound when you can hum the tune
SoundHound’s support material documents voice prompts including “What song am I humming?” and “Start a hum search.” Open its song-identification feature, use one of those prompts or the equivalent current control, and hum the melody for a sustained phrase. Keep the recording free of speech and background music.
SoundHound can provide another candidate when Google does not. The reviewed support information does not establish a game-soundtrack catalog size, accuracy rate, or a guaranteed clip duration. Do not treat a result as confirmed until it agrees with the game scene or a trustworthy soundtrack or credit listing.
Use the game title and scene as search clues
Build a query from specific context
If you know the game, combine its title with the most precise clue you remember:

Search several spellings of a location or character. A soundtrack may list a cue by an internal title that never appears in dialogue, while fan discussions may use a descriptive nickname.
Separate licensed songs from original score
First decide what kind of music you heard:
- Licensed song: a commercially released track by an outside artist, often listed in music credits or a licensing soundtrack.
- Original score cue: music written for the game, sometimes released only as part of an official score or not released at all.
- Menu, level, or event theme: a short cue that may be listed under a functional name rather than a song title.
- Regional or version-specific track: music changed for a territory, platform port, remaster, radio edit, or later patch.
This classification prevents a common dead end: searching a commercial-song database for a short original cue that has never received a standalone release.
What a game-focused lookup can and cannot do
The SceneSong Google Play listing says the app can identify songs through a microphone, show songs associated with games, and link to music services and stores. Its listing shows an update date of July 11, 2026. Those are developer-provided feature descriptions, not an independent accuracy test or proof that its catalog contains every game, platform, region, or soundtrack release. Use it as an additional lookup path, then verify the result independently.
Improve the audio before retrying
Make a cleaner capture
- Return to the exact scene and disable subtitles, voice chat, radio chatter, or other optional layers if the game permits.
- Move the capture point to a section with sustained melody rather than an impact, menu click, or transition sting.
- Reduce room noise, controller clicks, fans, and nearby conversation.
- Keep the phone microphone close enough to hear the source clearly but far enough from a loud speaker to avoid distortion.
- Try the same passage at normal speed. A slowed or sped-up clip can prevent a database match even when the melody is recognizable.
Use a different evidence type
If Shazam fails on a replay, hum the melody into Google or SoundHound. If humming fails, search the game and scene. If all three fail, identify whether the cue is a remix, an unreleased score, a radio track, or a regional variant and search credits for that category instead of repeating the same query.

Verify a candidate before you call it identified
Check the recording against the scene
- Listen for the same lead instrument, vocalist, tempo, and arrangement.
- Compare the point where the music starts and stops in the scene.
- Check whether the game uses a loop, an edited intro, or a shortened in-game mix.
- Confirm that the candidate belongs to the correct game release, platform, and region.
Confirm the credit or release
Use an official soundtrack track list, in-game music or end credits, a publisher’s soundtrack announcement, or a reliable release entry. Distinguish the composer from the performer and the game’s soundtrack album from a later arrangement or compilation. If the only evidence is an app result, describe it as a likely match rather than a confirmed title.
Handle unreleased cues honestly
Some music exists only in game files, a live performance, a trailer edit, or a fan extraction. In that case, report the strongest established name—such as a credit label or scene description—and say that no commercial soundtrack release is established. Do not substitute a similarly titled album track.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Shazam returns nothing
- Replay a longer, clearer section with less dialogue and effects.
- Try the same-device recognition route rather than recording the phone’s speaker with another app.
- Use Google or SoundHound if you can reproduce the melody.
- Search the game’s credits for an original or unreleased cue.
Shazam returns an unrelated song
- Check whether the game is playing a licensed radio or background track instead of its score.
- Capture a different section; a loud effect can dominate the fingerprint.
- Compare the candidate’s exact recording with the scene before accepting it.
Google or SoundHound gives several plausible songs
- Hum the central motif again with a steadier rhythm.
- Try a different phrase from the melody, especially the chorus or cadence.
- Use the game title and scene to eliminate matches that never appear in that release.
The game is known but the soundtrack list has no match
- Search the level, location, character, boss, menu, and ending separately.
- Check whether the version is a remake, remaster, port, or regional edition.
- Look for music credits rather than only commercial album track lists.
- Consider that the cue may never have been officially released.

What ShazamKit means for developers
Apple describes ShazamKit as a developer framework that can match tracks against the Shazam catalog or let developers create a custom catalog from prerecorded audio. A studio, archivist, or rights holder with a known collection could use that capability in a purpose-built application. It does not give an ordinary player a hidden database of every game cue, and it does not establish that a custom catalog exists for the game you are investigating.
