To import a 3D model into Roblox Studio, open File > Import, choose an .fbx, .obj, or .gltf mesh file, check the preview and settings, then select Import. For Blender models, pay particular attention to scale and orientation: Blender uses metric units and Z-up, while Studio uses studs and Y-up.
Prepare and export your model
Create or adjust the mesh in a 3D application such as Blender or Maya, and check it against Roblox’s mesh requirements before exporting. If you are using Blender, plan for the difference between Blender’s metric units and Z-up axis and Studio’s studs and Y-up axis. Roblox’s Blender guide explains settings for preserving position, orientation, and scale between the applications.
Export the mesh as .fbx, .obj, or .gltf. Roblox recommends FBX when you need all of Studio’s 3D import features; its export documentation notes that FBX carries rig and influence data for rigged or skinned models. See Roblox’s export settings.
Import the file in Studio
- In Roblox Studio, choose File > Import. The Importer can also be opened from the Home tab.
- Select your exported mesh file and review the preview. Check dimensions, orientation, textures, hierarchy, and any warnings before accepting it.
- Choose the applicable import options. Import Only as Model groups multiple objects under a Model. Anchored controls whether imported MeshParts are anchored. Rigged assets have additional rig options.
- Enable Upload to Roblox only if you want the asset uploaded to your Toolbox and Asset Manager inventory. Choose the creator appropriate to your project.
- Select Import, then inspect the asset in the workspace. The Importer may also offer Find in Workspace and Copy asset ID.
The Importer previews meshes, checks them for issues, and rejects meshes with errors. Roblox’s Importer documentation describes supported formats, settings, and the import workflow.

Choose a format that fits the asset
All three formats below are accepted for mesh imports, but the documented feature coverage differs. Roblox describes broader support for FBX and glTF than for OBJ, and recommends FBX for the full set of Studio 3D import features.
| Format | What Roblox documents | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
.fbx |
Supports the full set of Studio 3D import features; carries rig and influence data for rigged or skinned models. | Use when you need broad feature support, especially for rigged or skinned assets. |
.gltf |
Roblox documents support for multiple mesh objects and hierarchies, basic and PBR textures, cage meshes, rigs, avatar components, animation data, and vertex colors. | Consider it when your export workflow uses glTF and its documented features meet your needs. |
.obj |
Supported as a mesh format; Roblox documents less feature coverage than for FBX and glTF. | Suitable when a basic mesh import meets your requirements; check the preview for expected content. |
These capabilities and format recommendations are from Roblox’s Importer documentation and export settings.

Use the right import route for rigged and avatar assets
Use Studio’s Importer for meshes that contain rigging, skinning, or animation data. Asset Manager bulk mesh import does not support rigging, skinning, or animation data, nor does it support accessories or characters with facial animations. Roblox lists these limits in its mesh documentation.

The model is the wrong size or faces the wrong way
Check the dimensions and orientation in the Importer preview. For Blender exports, account for the unit and axis difference—metric and Z-up in Blender versus studs and Y-up in Studio—and consult Roblox’s Blender workflow guide for application-specific settings.

Textures are missing or look different
First inspect the material and the import preview. Roblox supports basic and PBR textures; its texture specifications explain the supported texture setup. For rigid accessories, Roblox documents a fallback: import the image separately through Asset Manager after importing the model, wait for moderation, then set the MeshPart’s TextureID to the image asset ID. This is a specific fallback, not a fix for every texture issue.
You need the model in your inventory
A local Studio import and an upload are separate choices. Turn on Upload to Roblox in the Importer when you want the asset in Toolbox and Asset Manager; uploaded assets go through Roblox moderation. See the Importer guide and Roblox’s third-party software workflow.
