Download the Canva presentation as a Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) file, upload that file to Google Drive, and open it with Google Slides. Google creates an editable Slides copy while keeping the uploaded PowerPoint file separately. If you need only selected slides, use Google Slides’ File → Import slides command instead.
This is a conversion, not a native Canva-file import. Text and simple objects often remain editable, but fonts, spacing, backgrounds, videos, audio, links, and animations can change. Keep the Canva original and inspect the converted deck before you share or present it.

Before you start
You need access to the Canva presentation, permission to download it, and a Google account that can use Drive and Slides. A desktop browser gives you the clearest version of the menus described below; labels can vary with account type, browser, administrator settings, and interface rollouts.
- Keep the original Canva design open and unchanged until the Google Slides copy has passed your checks.
- Have enough Drive storage for the uploaded
.pptxand the converted Slides file. - Decide whether your priority is editable objects or an identical visual result. That choice determines the best export format.
- If the deck is used for a class, client meeting, or live event, test it in the account and device that will actually present it.
Canva’s presentation page lists PowerPoint, PDF, PNG, and JPEG export choices. For an editable Google Slides result, PowerPoint is the normal bridge. PDF, PNG, and JPEG are fixed-layout or flattened alternatives rather than equivalent editable imports.

Canva’s presentation documentation describes the export options and an optional Google Drive integration. Google’s Workspace Learning Center documents uploading an Office file to Drive and opening it with the corresponding Google editor.
Method 1: Export Canva as PowerPoint and convert it in Google Slides
This is the dependable general workflow when you want a standalone Google Slides presentation.
Step 1: Export the presentation from Canva
- Open the presentation in Canva.
- Select Share.
- Choose Download.
- Open the File type selector.
- Select Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).
- If Canva shows a page-selection control, choose All pages or select only the pages you need.
- Click Download and save the resulting
.pptxsomewhere easy to find.
The downloaded file is the handoff format. Google Slides does not generally open a proprietary Canva design file directly; it converts the PowerPoint export instead. A Google Docs Editors Community answer gives the same practical export sequence and notes that individual Canva pages can be selected when the control is available. That community guidance is supporting information rather than a promise that every account shows identical menus.

- Open Google Drive.
- Click New → File upload.

.pptxfile from your computer. - Wait until the upload finishes. Do not open a partially uploaded file.
Step 3: Convert the upload to Google Slides
- Locate the uploaded PowerPoint file in Drive.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Open with → Google Slides.
- Wait while Google creates the Slides version.
- Rename the converted presentation so you can distinguish it from the original
.pptx. - Review every slide before editing or sending the file.
Google’s documented process creates a copy in Google’s Slides format that can be edited in the browser. The uploaded PowerPoint and the converted Slides presentation are separate Drive objects, so retain both until the conversion is approved.
Method 2: Import Canva slides into an existing Google Slides deck
Use this route when the Canva pages need to become part of an existing presentation rather than a new standalone file.
- Open the destination presentation in Google Slides.
- Select File → Import slides.
- Choose the Upload tab.
- Select the Canva-exported
.pptxfile from your device. - Choose All slides or select only the pages required.
- Click Import slides.
The imported pages are inserted into the open deck. This is useful for combining a Canva title section with an existing Google Slides report, or for moving only a few pages instead of converting an entire presentation. The detailed menu sequence is described in a Google Docs Editors Community response; Google’s official Drive documentation independently confirms the upload-and-convert path.

Method 3: Send the Canva presentation to Google Drive directly
Some Canva accounts expose a Google Drive integration in the editor. Treat it as a convenience shortcut, not a separate file format: Canva says the presentation is first saved to Drive as a .pptx, after which you save that file as Google Slides.
- Open the Canva presentation.
- Open the three-dot menu near the Present control.
- Choose See all.
- Select Google Drive.
- Connect a Google account if Canva requests authorization.
- Choose the destination Drive folder.
- In Drive, open the resulting
.pptx. - Choose File → Save as Google Slides.
The option may be absent or labeled differently depending on the current Canva interface, account, region, or available integrations. If you cannot find it, use the download-and-upload method above. Canva’s description of this route is available at its presentation page.
Which export format should you choose?
Choose the format according to the job the recipient must perform after delivery.
| Goal | Recommended format | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit text and slide objects in Google Slides | Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) |
Best practical balance of editability and migration speed | Fonts, spacing, media, and effects may need repair |
| Preserve the appearance for reading or printing | Fixed layout for viewing and submission | Not the same editable slide-object structure as a converted presentation | |
| Make each slide look like the Canva canvas | PNG or JPEG | Flattened slide image with strong visual consistency | Text, shapes, and images are no longer independently editable |
| Keep Canva-specific presentation features | Present from Canva | Retains Canva’s own animation, presenter, and interactive features | Does not deliver a native Google Slides working file |
Canva lists PNG, JPEG, PDF, and PPTX among its presentation exports. If the recipient specifically requires a Google Slides file, start with PPTX and plan a quality-control pass. If exact appearance matters more than editing, use image slides or PDF instead of forcing a damaged conversion.
What usually transfers, and what commonly needs repair?
There is no universal compatibility matrix for every Canva element in Google Slides. Treat the conversion as a first draft and verify the features that matter to your presentation.

| Decorative or uncommon fonts | Can be substituted when the font is unavailable in Google Slides | Replace with an available equivalent and resize affected text boxes |
| Basic shapes | Often remain selectable, though grouping and layering can shift | Check front-to-back order, alignment, and group boundaries |
| Full-slide backgrounds | Can move or crop at an edge | Compare the entire canvas and flatten the background if necessary |
| Animations and transitions | May not reproduce identically | Recreate important motion or present the original Canva file |
| Video and audio | May be missing or unreliable after conversion | Reinsert where possible and test playback in the presentation account |
| Hyperlinks | May survive, but conversion does not remove the need to test them | Open each important link in presentation mode |
| Speaker notes | Presenter-specific content requires confirmation after conversion | Open the notes area and verify that required notes are usable |
A Google product expert warns that complex fonts and animations can shift. User reports in Google’s community also describe changed fonts, cropped backgrounds, and videos or animations failing after conversion. Those reports demonstrate real failure modes, not a guarantee that every presentation will fail in the same way. Quality-control checklist after conversion
Do this inspection before handing over the deck. A quick thumbnail scan is not enough because many conversion errors appear only in text wrapping, links, or playback.
- Confirm slide dimensions. Check that widescreen or standard aspect ratio still matches the Canva original.
- Compare slide order. Make sure no page was omitted, duplicated, or rearranged.
- Check titles and body text. Look for substituted fonts, unexpected line breaks, clipping, and changed alignment.
- Review branded typography. Decorative fonts are the most likely to alter the geometry of a slide.
- Inspect images. Compare cropping, transparency, sharpness, and placement.
- Inspect full-bleed backgrounds. Look for narrow strips, right-edge cropping, or shifted images.
- Check layers and groups. Confirm that overlays, icons, and text are in the intended front-to-back order.
- Test hyperlinks. Run the deck in presentation mode and open every important destination.
- Test animations and transitions. Do not assume motion survived because the static frame looks correct.
- Test video and audio. Use the actual Google account, browser, and presentation device where possible.
- Check speaker notes. Confirm that notes are present and readable if the presenter relies on them.
- Save backups. Keep the Canva design and exported
.pptxeven after the Slides copy is accepted.
How to fix a broken conversion
The Microsoft PowerPoint option is missing in Canva
Use Share → Download rather than looking only in a three-dot menu. Search the file-type list for Microsoft PowerPoint or .pptx. If it is still absent, try Canva in a desktop browser, confirm that the design is a presentation, and check that your account has permission to download it. Canva documents PowerPoint export for presentations, but that does not establish that every design, account, or permission configuration exposes the option.
If only PDF or image export is available, use one of those as a fallback while recognizing that you are giving up the editable structure of a PPTX conversion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Open with Google Slides” is missing in Drive
Confirm that the upload has completed and that you are right-clicking the file inside Drive, not a local copy on your computer. Refresh Drive and try again. If the command still does not appear, open Google Slides separately and use File → Import slides → Upload. Managed school or business accounts may apply administrator policies; the available documentation does not establish a single restriction that applies to every organization.
Fonts changed or text is cut off
- Identify the slides affected by font substitution.
- Replace unavailable fonts with a close font available in Google Slides.
- Resize text boxes after changing fonts; do not assume the old dimensions still fit.
- Recheck line spacing, alignment, bullets, and text direction.
- Compare the corrected slide against the Canva original at the same zoom and aspect ratio.
Changing the font first is important: resizing a box before correcting the typeface can hide the underlying reflow problem.
Backgrounds or layered objects moved
Check whether the problem is cropping, altered slide dimensions, or a changed layer order. Reposition the affected object and inspect nearby groups. If a decorative background does not need to remain editable, export that slide or background as an image and use it as a fixed layer. Rebuild only the damaged slide when the rest of the deck is sound.

Video or audio is missing
Do not promise that media will transfer from Canva. Reinsert the media manually where Google Slides supports the source, then test playback while signed in to the presenting account. Verify network access, permissions, and sound output on the actual presentation device. If the media is central to the experience and cannot be made reliable, present the original Canva deck instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Animations or transitions disappeared
Recreate only the motion that conveys essential meaning. For a short deck with heavy animation, a manual rebuild may be faster and more predictable than repairing every converted object. If the audience only needs to view the designed presentation, keep the presentation in Canva rather than stripping away its defining effects.
Only some pages are needed
Either select individual pages during Canva’s download process, when that control is available, or import the full .pptx into an existing Google Slides deck and choose the required slides in the import dialog. The second approach preserves the original export as a reusable source.
When PPTX is not the best answer
Use image-based slides for visual fidelity
Export each Canva page as PNG or JPEG, create slides with matching dimensions, and place one exported image on each page. This produces a visually stable slide because the design is flattened into a single image. It also means that text, shapes, and photos cannot be edited independently. Use this method for a deck that must look right but will not be revised.
Use PDF for fixed-layout delivery
Choose PDF when the recipient needs to read, print, submit, or archive the presentation rather than edit it as a slide deck. PDF is a fixed-layout fallback, not a clean substitute for native Google Slides objects.
Rebuild selected slides manually
Manual rebuilding is justified when only a few slides are damaged, or when the deck contains video, audio, interactive elements, elaborate transparency, masks, shadows, or complex layering. Recreate the title, text, and key objects in Google Slides while using the Canva deck as a visual reference. Rebuilding only the problem slides avoids starting over.

Stay in Canva
Present directly from Canva when its animations, presenter tools, Canva Live, recording features, or interactive behavior are central to the session and the recipient does not need an editable Google Slides file. Canva’s presentation materials describe these capabilities and explain why a conversion can be the wrong endpoint for a Canva-native presentation.
A reliable handoff workflow for teams
- Duplicate or preserve the Canva design before exporting.
- Export a complete
.pptxeven if you initially plan to import only a few pages. - Upload the export to a clearly named Drive folder.
- Convert it to Google Slides or import selected pages into the destination deck.
- Assign one person to perform the slide-by-slide quality check.
- Record any replaced fonts, rebuilt media, or flattened backgrounds so later editors understand the changes.
- Share the converted Slides link only after testing edit permissions and presentation mode.
- Keep the Canva file and original
.pptxas recovery copies.
This workflow separates the source design, transport file, and collaborative Slides version. That separation makes it easier to retry the conversion, compare a damaged slide, or return to Canva when a Google Slides repair would compromise the design.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do the conversion on a phone?
The underlying process is the same, but the controls for downloading, selecting pages, uploading, and checking layout are easier to see on a desktop browser. For a presentation that must be accurate, use a computer for the export and inspection even if you later edit on mobile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does uploading a PPTX automatically make it a Google Slides file?
No. Uploading stores the PowerPoint file in Drive. The Slides version is created when you choose Open with → Google Slides or import the file through Google Slides.
Should I delete the PPTX after conversion?
No. Keep it until the converted deck has been approved. It is the cleanest source for another conversion attempt and provides a reference if a later edit damages the Slides copy.
Can I guarantee that every Canva element stays editable?
No. PPTX is the best general route for editability, but conversion compatibility varies by element. Fonts, animation, media, effects, grouping, and layered backgrounds deserve explicit testing.
What should I send when the recipient says the deck must be editable?
Send the converted Google Slides link or file, not a PDF or image-only deck, and verify that the recipient has the required edit permission. Keep the Canva design and PPTX privately as backups unless the recipient also requests them.
