To import a phpMyAdmin database export to your server, select or create the destination database, open its Import tab, choose the exported .sql file, review the options, and start the import. For a large dump, transfer the file to the server and run the MySQL client instead of sending it through a browser. A successful upload is not enough: verify tables, views, triggers, routines, indexes, and representative data before pointing your application at the restored database.

Before you start
Have the following information ready:
- The original export file, preferably kept unchanged as a rollback copy.
- The destination server hostname and, if it is not the default, its MySQL port.
- The destination database name.
- A MySQL username and password with enough privileges to execute the dump.
- Permission to create or modify the database, or an administrator who can do that preparation.
- The application’s current database host, name, username, password, and any table-prefix setting.
Do not overwrite a production database without a current backup and a rollback plan. If the import stops halfway, you may have a mixture of old and new objects. Record the first error message and preserve the original export before attempting a retry.
Determine what the SQL dump contains
A single-database export often contains table definitions and data but no CREATE DATABASE or USE statement. In that case, you must create or select the destination database before importing. Other dumps include statements such as CREATE DATABASE and USE; those statements can select the database themselves when the importing account is allowed to execute them.

Open the export in a text editor or inspect its first section. Look for statements resembling these:
CREATE DATABASE `example_db`;
USE `example_db`;Do not edit a dump casually. Removing a statement can change the intended result, and changing a database name in only one place can leave later statements pointing at the wrong schema. If the file is compressed, such as .sql.gz, use phpMyAdmin’s documented compressed-file support or decompress it on the server when using the command line.

The browser method is convenient for a small or moderate export when you have access to phpMyAdmin connected to the destination server.
- Sign in to the correct phpMyAdmin instance. Confirm that it is connected to the server where the restored database should live, not merely to the server that produced the export.
- Open the destination database. In the left navigation, select the existing database. If it does not exist and your account is permitted to create databases, create it first. If database creation is disabled, ask the host or administrator to create it and grant your account access.
- Choose the Import tab. phpMyAdmin’s documented workflow is to open a database or table before choosing Import when you want the data loaded there.
- Select the export file. Use the file chooser, or use phpMyAdmin’s drag-and-drop interface when available. Supported compressed formats can include files such as
.sql.gz. On installations configured with a server-sideUploadDir, you can select a file that has already been transferred to that directory instead of uploading it through the browser. - Review the format and options. Leave the format as SQL unless the export uses another format that phpMyAdmin identifies. Check the character set, partial-import options, and any compression setting against the export’s metadata and the destination server’s configuration.
- Start the import. Keep the result page and the complete error text. The first SQL error is generally more useful than later cascading errors.
In its import and export documentation, phpMyAdmin states: “To import data, go to the ‘Import’ tab in phpMyAdmin. To import data into a specific database or table, open the database or table before going to the ‘Import’ tab.”
When the database does not exist
If you can create databases, create the target before opening Import. The exact control varies by hosting configuration, but the SQL equivalent is:
CREATE DATABASE `example_db`;MySQL will return an access-denied error when the account lacks the privilege required for that operation. In that situation, creating the database repeatedly in phpMyAdmin will not help; the host or administrator must create it or grant the required privilege.

Choosing character-set and partial-import settings
Use the export’s declared character set and collation where possible. A mismatch can produce garbled text, collation errors, or rejected index definitions. Partial import can be useful for a deliberately split file, but enabling it on an ordinary dump may hide the fact that an earlier statement failed. Keep a copy of the error output either way.
Import a large SQL dump without a browser upload
Browser imports can fail because of web-server upload limits, PHP upload and memory limits, HTTP timeouts, or phpMyAdmin’s execution limits. There is no universal file-size cutoff: the effective limit depends on the server, PHP configuration, proxy, and hosting plan.
Use phpMyAdmin’s server-side UploadDir
- Transfer the export to the server with an approved method such as
scpor FTP. - Place it in the phpMyAdmin
UploadDirdirectory configured by the administrator. - Open the destination database, choose Import, and select the server-side file from the available list.
- Start the import and save the result or error output.
This avoids sending the file through the browser, but the PHP process still has to parse and execute the SQL. A file that is too large or too slow for the web request may still be better handled by the MySQL client.
Use the MySQL client over shell access
When SSH or another shell is available, run the import on the server or from a machine that can reach the database. The standard form for a dump that does not select its own database is:
mysql -h DB_HOST -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME < export.sqlReplace the placeholders with your actual host, username, database name, and file path. The -p option prompts for the password so you do not place it directly in the command line. Avoid putting a real password in shell history, scripts, process listings, or shared logs.
If the dump contains its own database-selection statements, omit the database name:

mysql -h DB_HOST -u DB_USER -p < export.sqlInside an interactive MySQL client session, the equivalent documented command is:
source export.sql;Use a full path, such as source /var/backups/export.sql;, if the client’s current directory is not where the file resides. Keep the terminal output, especially the first statement that fails.
Windows PowerShell redirection
In Windows PowerShell, the < redirection operator is reserved rather than interpreted in the same way as it is by a traditional command shell. MySQL documentation gives a cmd.exe /c alternative. One pattern is:
cmd.exe /c "mysql -h DB_HOST -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME < export.sql"You can also open the MySQL client and run source from its prompt. Confirm that the file path uses the correct Windows syntax and that the account can reach the server through the configured host and port.
Prepare the database and privileges correctly
The importing account must be able to execute every statement that the dump contains. Depending on the export, that can include creating tables, inserting rows, altering indexes, creating views, defining triggers, and creating stored routines. MySQL authenticates the account and then checks privileges for each individual statement.
Typical privilege-related failures
- Access denied for the database: the username, password, host, or selected database may be wrong, or the account may not be granted access to that schema.
- CREATE command denied: the account can connect but cannot create tables, views, routines, or the database itself.
- Trigger, routine, or view errors: the account may lack the specific privilege required, or the dump may reference a definer account that does not exist on the destination.
- Unknown database: the dump did not create the database and no target database was supplied to phpMyAdmin or the client.
Ask the administrator to grant only the privileges required for the intended import. A shared host may allow table changes in one schema while prohibiting database creation or account administration.
Do not blindly import account-management statements
A full-system dump can contain user-creation, grant, or other account-management statements. On a shared server, importing those statements can alter access for unrelated applications or fail because elevated privileges are unavailable. Import them only when the administrator explicitly intends those changes. Credentials can also appear in logs or client history in some circumstances, so handle the dump and command output as sensitive data.

Check compatibility before retrying
A dump is executable SQL, not just a passive data file. Compare the source and destination MySQL or MariaDB versions, SQL mode, character set, collation, storage engines, and enabled features before a production migration.
- Version differences: syntax, reserved words, authentication behavior, and supported features can change between releases.
- SQL mode: strict modes can reject values or definitions that a more permissive source accepted.
- Character set and collation: unsupported collations or incompatible defaults can stop table creation or corrupt displayed text.
- Storage engines and features: a destination without the required engine or feature may skip or reject table definitions.
- Definers and security context: views, triggers, and routines can refer to accounts that are absent on the destination.
Keep the original export and record the first failing statement before changing anything. Fix the underlying compatibility or privilege issue, then retry from a clean target when possible rather than repeatedly importing into a partially changed schema.

“The uploaded file exceeds the maximum allowed size”
This is a web-server or PHP upload limit, not necessarily a problem with the SQL. Use server-side UploadDir, transfer the file with scp or FTP, or run the MySQL client directly. Increasing limits requires administrator access and may still leave execution-time or memory limits unresolved.
“Maximum execution time exceeded” or a blank result page
The HTTP request timed out while PHP was parsing or executing the dump. Check the server logs if you administer the host, but prefer a server-side or command-line import for a large file. Retrying the same browser request can leave partial objects behind.
“Access denied”
Verify the selected database, hostname, port, username, and password. Then confirm that the account has the privileges required by the first failing statement. If the dump tries to create a database or users, ask the administrator whether those statements are permitted.
“Unknown database”
Create the destination database or select an existing one before importing. If the dump is supposed to create and select its own database, verify that its CREATE DATABASE and USE statements name the intended schema and that the account can execute them.

“Table already exists”
The target is not empty, or a previous attempt created part of the schema. Stop and decide whether to restore into a clean database, remove only the intended objects, or use a dump option designed for replacement. Do not drop a production schema until you have a verified backup and rollback procedure.
“Unknown collation,” syntax errors, or unsupported features
Compare the source and destination versions and settings. The first unsupported statement identifies the compatibility boundary. A controlled conversion of collation or syntax may be required; do not replace every unfamiliar token blindly because definitions, indexes, and stored programs can depend on it.

Import completes but text is corrupted
Check the export’s character-set declaration, the phpMyAdmin import character-set option, the connection character set, and the destination table or database defaults. Compare a known text value from the source and destination before changing data in bulk.
Views, triggers, or routines are missing
Inspect the dump for those object definitions and look for warnings or skipped statements in the import output. Confirm the account’s privileges and any required definer account. Also verify that the export was not created with options that intentionally excluded programmable objects.
Verify the restored database
Do not treat phpMyAdmin’s success message as a complete migration test. Verification is schema-specific, but this checklist catches the most common omissions:
- Confirm that every expected table exists in the destination schema.
- Compare representative row counts or application records with the source. Use the same filters and account for records that may have changed during the export.
- Check that required views, triggers, stored routines, indexes, and foreign keys are present.
- Review the import output for warnings, skipped statements, duplicate-key messages, and character-set errors.
- Update the application’s database host, port, database name, username, password, and table-prefix settings.
- In a maintenance window or non-production environment, test a representative read and write, login flow, background job, and any feature that depends on a view, trigger, or routine.
The exact verification query depends on the schema; there is no universal row count or success query that proves every application has been restored correctly.

Choose the browser workflow for convenience when the file and server limits allow it. For a large dump or a migration you may need to repeat, transfer the file to the server and use the MySQL client.
