How to Import Custom Art and Fonts into RPG Maker MZ and MV

How do I import custom art into RPG Maker? In RPG Maker MZ, use Tools > Resource Manager and choose the category that matches your file, or copy a correctly formatted PNG into the corresponding project folder. To add fonts, open Database > System 2 and use MZ’s main-font, number-font, fallback-font, and font-size settings. RPG Maker MV uses a different documented font workflow: edit fonts/gamefont.css and put the font file in that same folder.

This version-aware guide explains the exact paths, sprite-sheet layouts, naming prefixes, folder choices, licensing boundaries, and fixes for the import problems that most often prevent custom assets from appearing correctly.

Choose the correct workflow before importing anything

Your engine version and asset type determine the right procedure. MZ has an editor-based Resource Manager and dedicated font filename controls in System 2. MV’s official help instead directs you to a CSS file for fonts. Images follow the project’s asset categories in both engines, but MZ’s published standards are especially explicit about PNG files, folder placement, and sheet layouts.

How do I import custom art into RPG Maker MZ?

Method 1: Import through Resource Manager

The safest editor workflow for additional graphics and audio is the MZ Resource Manager. The RPG Maker FAQ describes it as the route for adding custom resources and DLC resource packs.

  1. Open your MZ project.
  2. Choose Tools > Resource Manager.
  3. Select the resource category that matches the file you are importing. For example, choose a character category for a walking sprite, a face category for dialogue portraits, a tileset category for map tiles, or a picture category for event images.
  4. Select the material to import and complete the file-selection dialog.
  5. Open the relevant database or map editor and confirm that the new resource appears in the category you selected.

Choosing the right category matters because RPG Maker interprets each type of image differently. A correctly sized character sheet will not become a tileset merely because both files are PNGs, and a face sheet has a different grid from a character sheet.

Method 2: Copy the file into the project folder

MZ’s asset documentation also permits direct placement. Copy an original image into the project folder that corresponds to its resource category. Files in the appropriate folders become selectable in the editor, and subfolders are permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the editor or avoid editing the same asset while copying it.
  2. Open the project directory and identify the folder for the asset type.
  3. Copy the image into that folder, optionally using a subfolder for organization.
  4. Use half-width alphanumeric characters for folder names, as recommended by the MZ asset standards.
  5. Reopen the relevant selector in MZ and check that the file is listed.

Direct placement is useful when you are importing many files at once or maintaining assets in a predictable directory structure. Resource Manager is preferable when you want the editor to guide the category choice one file at a time.

Use PNG and check category-specific dimensions

MZ’s published asset standards state that images must be PNG files. Convert artwork before importing it rather than relying on a different format to load correctly. PNG does not remove the need to follow the selected category’s dimensions, transparency expectations, sheet arrangement, or tile layout.

  • Keep transparent areas transparent when the image is intended to sit over a map or interface.
  • Verify that repeated cells are equal in width and height.
  • Do not assume that a character sheet, face sheet, tileset, picture, and battle image share one universal canvas size.
  • Use simple folder names and avoid unusual characters in folder paths when troubleshooting a file that does not appear.

How do I add custom fonts to RPG Maker MZ?

Configure the font in Database > System 2

MZ exposes font-related settings in the database rather than requiring the MV CSS procedure. Open Database > System 2, then set the fields relevant to your project:

MZ field Purpose What to check
Main Font Filename The principal font used by the game’s text Make sure the selected font file is available to the project and renders the characters your game needs
Number Font Filename The font used for number displays controlled by the engine Set it separately when numerals need a different style or clearer readability
Fallback Font A backup font for characters missing from the main font Use it for scripts, symbols, or accented characters that the main font does not contain
Font Size The configured text size Preview dialogue, menus, battle windows, and long strings at the chosen size
  1. Place the font asset where your MZ project can access it according to the editor’s font-file controls and your project’s deployment setup.
  2. Open Database > System 2.
  3. Enter or select the value for Main Font Filename.
  4. If required, set Number Font Filename independently.
  5. Specify a Fallback Font for missing glyphs.
  6. Set Font Size, save the project, and test every text-heavy screen.

The reviewed MZ help establishes these fields but does not provide a universal extension rule or a complete installation recipe for every font file type. Do not infer that every extension works in every deployment simply because a file exists on your computer; use the filename and format options presented by your MZ version and verify the exported game separately.

Test the characters your game actually uses

A font can appear correct in an English title screen and still fail in dialogue, item descriptions, or player names. Test uppercase and lowercase letters, punctuation, accented characters, symbols, currency marks, and every writing system your script requires. If a glyph is absent, MZ should use the configured fallback rather than leaving an empty square, provided the fallback contains that character.

How do I add custom fonts to RPG Maker MV?

This is the MV-specific procedure. Do not replace it with MZ’s System 2 instructions.

  1. Open the MV project folder.
  2. Open the fonts directory.
  3. Copy the font file into that same folder.
  4. Open fonts/gamefont.css in a text editor.
  5. Edit the CSS font declaration so the game references the copied file using the filename and format syntax already used by that stylesheet.
  6. Save the CSS file, reopen or play-test the project, and inspect menus, messages, battle text, and number displays.

RPG Maker MV’s official help specifically documents the fonts/gamefont.css path and the requirement to place the font file in the same folder. This is a version difference, not an alternative MZ setting. If you are moving a project from MV to MZ, expect to reconfigure the font through MZ’s System 2 controls rather than assuming the old CSS edit will carry over.

Build a correct custom character sprite sheet

Understand the three-frame animation set

MZ character sheets encode both direction and walking animation. One character set has four rows and three columns:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Row 1: Down
  • Row 2: Left
  • Row 3: Right
  • Row 4: Up

The center column is the standing frame; the outer columns are the movement frames. The engine cycles through those three columns while the character moves.

With a 48-by-48-pixel cell, one character set is 144 by 192 pixels: three columns across and four rows down. The RPG Maker Web tutorial also gives a 96-by-96-pixel cell example, producing a 288-by-384-pixel set. These are examples, not mandatory universal dimensions. Cell width and height can vary when every cell remains equal and the four-row, three-column arrangement is preserved.

Choose between a full sheet and a single-character file

A normal character sheet contains eight characters arranged in four columns by two rows. If you are storing only one character, begin the filename with $. That tells the engine to treat the image as a single character rather than dividing it as an eight-character sheet.

The ! prefix prevents the usual six-pixel upward offset applied to character graphics. It is useful for objects or sprites that must sit exactly on the tile position instead of being visually lifted. You can combine the prefixes when both behaviors are needed, using $! at the start of the filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare and verify the sheet

  1. Draw or export equal-sized cells.
  2. Place the four directions in the documented row order.
  3. Place standing art in the center column and movement frames on the outside columns.
  4. Use an eight-character, four-column by two-row sheet when supplying a standard multi-character file, or add $ for a single-character image.
  5. Add ! when the six-pixel offset is inappropriate.
  6. Save the image as PNG, import it through the character category, and select it in the event or actor settings.
  7. Walk the character in all four directions and watch the idle and movement frames at normal game scale.

Other custom art: faces, tiles, pictures, and interface graphics

Face sheets

MZ’s face-sheet standard uses two rows by four columns, with each face image measuring 144 by 144 pixels. Arrange portraits consistently on that grid before importing the sheet. A portrait intended for a message window should not be prepared using the character-sheet animation layout.

Tilesets

Tilesets have their own MZ standards for tile dimensions, placement, and category behavior. Use the tileset category and its documented template rather than cutting a character or face sheet into tiles by guesswork. After importing, assign the tileset in the database and check passability, terrain boundaries, animated tiles, and map-scale alignment.

Pictures and other images

Pictures, battle images, title graphics, and interface resources are selected in different editor contexts. Put each file in the matching project folder or choose its matching Resource Manager category. Keep the original PNG dimensions and transparency intentional, because the engine displays these assets according to their role rather than applying one shared image rule.

Resource Manager versus direct folder placement

Choice Best for Advantages Risks and checks
Tools > Resource Manager Single files, DLC packs, and users who want category guidance Uses the editor’s resource categories and reduces the chance of placing a file in the wrong folder You still need to select the correct category and satisfy its dimensions and format rules
Direct project-folder placement Bulk imports, scripted asset pipelines, and organized subfolders Fast and easy to repeat; MZ recognizes files in appropriate folders Incorrect folders, unsupported names, or stale editor windows can make a valid file appear missing

Neither method repairs an incorrectly designed sheet. Import is only the file-registration step; layout, transparency, naming prefixes, and category assignment determine how the game interprets the art.

Troubleshoot assets that do not appear or display incorrectly

The file is not listed

  • Confirm that you used the folder matching the asset category.
  • For MZ, try Tools > Resource Manager and select the category explicitly.
  • Check that the image is PNG and that the folder name uses simple half-width alphanumeric characters.
  • Close and reopen the relevant editor window after copying files directly.
  • Look for duplicate filenames in different subfolders and select the intended path.

The character is cropped, offset, or animated incorrectly

  • Check that all cells have identical width and height.
  • Confirm the four-row direction order: Down, Left, Right, Up.
  • Confirm that the standing frame is in the center column.
  • Add $ when the image contains one character instead of eight.
  • Add ! when the default six-pixel upward offset causes incorrect placement.
  • Check that the image is being selected as a character resource, not as a face, picture, or tileset.

The font is unchanged in MZ

  • Open Database > System 2 and verify Main Font Filename.
  • Check Number Font Filename separately if only damage, currency, or other numeric displays remain unchanged.
  • Confirm the filename and project location used by the MZ font controls.
  • Test a fresh play session after saving the database.

The font is unchanged in MV

  • Verify that the font file is inside the project’s fonts folder.
  • Open fonts/gamefont.css and check that its declaration points to the exact copied filename.
  • Check spelling, capitalization, and the format syntax already present in the CSS file.
  • Reload the project or play-test again after saving the stylesheet.

Some characters show as boxes

The selected font may not contain those glyphs. In MZ, configure a fallback font and test the missing script or symbols. In either engine, confirm that the font license permits embedding and distribution with your game; a technically working font is not automatically legally redistributable.

Licensing custom art, fonts, and default materials

The RPG Maker FAQ says that default materials from another RPG Maker version may be used when you own both the version in which the materials are supplied and the version in which you intend to use them. That permission concerns included RPG Maker materials; it does not grant rights to arbitrary third-party art or fonts.

  • Keep the license text, purchase receipt, or creator permission with your project files.
  • Check whether commercial use is allowed.
  • Check whether redistribution inside an executable or web build is allowed.
  • Look for attribution, modification, seat, platform, and redistribution requirements.
  • Do not assume that a free download permits embedding in a commercial game.

No particular third-party font license is established here, so the font’s own license remains the authority.

A practical import checklist

  1. Identify the engine: MZ or MV.
  2. Identify the asset type: character, face, tileset, picture, interface image, or font.
  3. For MZ images, export PNG and prepare the category-specific layout.
  4. Use Tools > Resource Manager or copy the file into the matching MZ folder.
  5. For MZ fonts, configure Database > System 2; for MV fonts, edit fonts/gamefont.css and place the font beside it.
  6. For character sheets, verify equal cells, direction rows, animation columns, and any $ or ! prefix.
  7. Play-test every context in which the asset appears.
  8. Confirm the asset and font licenses before sharing or selling the game.

Final recommendation

For MZ, start with Resource Manager for graphics and System 2 for fonts, then use direct folder placement when a larger or automated asset workflow makes it more efficient. Treat every image category as its own specification, especially character and face sheets. For MV, keep the font process separate: fonts/gamefont.css plus the font file in that folder. Correct naming, layout, PNG formatting, and licensing checks are what turn an imported file into a dependable in-game asset.
