On Windows 10 or 11, open a Bedrock-compatible .mcpack file to import it into Minecraft. Importing makes the pack available; you must then activate it under Resource packs for the world where you want to use it.
Before you import a pack
- These steps are for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Windows 10 or 11, not Java Edition. The PC bundle may include both editions, but their packs are not interchangeable. Microsoft explains the differences between Java and Bedrock Edition.
- Get a pack made for Bedrock. The usual file is
.mcpack, which Microsoft defines as a zipped resource or behavior pack used to modify Bedrock Edition and transfer resources. See Microsoft’s Minecraft file extension definitions. - A
.mcaddoncan bundle add-on files, while a.mcworldis a world archive—not a standalone resource pack.
Import a downloaded .mcpack file
- Open File Explorer and go to the folder where the pack was downloaded.
- Double-click the
.mcpackfile, or select it and choose Open. Minecraft should launch and import the pack. Microsoft’s add-on guide covers the Windows import process. - Look for Minecraft’s import-success notification. The pack is now available in the game, but it is not necessarily enabled for any world yet.
If the download is a ZIP
Microsoft’s Windows instructions allow a ZIP that contains the pack to be renamed with the .mcpack extension before opening it. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions if needed, then rename the file’s extension. Do this only when the ZIP is the Bedrock pack; renaming an arbitrary ZIP or a Java resource pack does not make its contents Bedrock-compatible.
Activate the pack for a world
Imported packs must be activated separately for each world you want to use them in.
For a new world
- Choose Create New World.
- Open Resource packs.
- Find the pack under Available and select Activate.
- Finish creating the world.
For an existing world
- From Play, find the world and select its pencil/edit icon.
- Open Resource packs.
- Under Available, choose the pack and select Activate.
- Return to the world and load it.

Marketplace packs use a different download route
If you obtained the pack through Minecraft Marketplace, open Marketplace > My Library and download it there. You do not need to manually import a purchased Marketplace pack as an outside file. Once available, select it under Resource packs for the world where it should apply. See Minecraft’s Marketplace FAQ.
Fix common import problems
Opening the file does nothing
- Check that the file is a Bedrock
.mcpack, not a Java pack or an unrelated archive. - Make sure Windows is showing file extensions. A file that appears to end in
.mcpackmay actually be named something likepack.mcpack.zip. - Confirm Minecraft Bedrock is installed and try opening the file again.
The pack imported but is missing in the world
Open that world’s edit screen and check Resource packs. Importing adds the pack to Minecraft; it does not automatically activate it for every world.

The game crashes or packs conflict
Restart Minecraft and install available updates. If the issue continues, disable packs one at a time to find a conflict; when multiple packs change the same assets, adjust their order. Redownload a pack that appears incomplete or corrupted, and test it in a new world to check whether the problem is tied to an existing world. Windows installations can vary by Minecraft distribution and version, and Microsoft’s current instructions do not establish one manual resource-pack folder path that applies to all of them. The supported file-open workflow is the safer default; avoid treating older PackagesMicrosoft.MinecraftUWP... paths found online as universal.
