Set the PS5 to the display’s best supported output, start HDR at On When Supported, and select the highest quality option in your streaming app. Then check connection stability and the service’s plan and title limits. These steps can prevent avoidable softness or quality drops, but a PS5 cannot turn a low-resolution anime source into native 4K.
What actually controls picture quality
Anime quality on a PS5 is determined by several links in the playback chain, not by the console alone:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The source stream: The service, episode, subscription plan and title determine the maximum resolution, bitrate and HDR version available.
- The network: Streaming services can lower the bitrate when throughput fluctuates, even if a speed test shows a fast internet plan.
- The display path: Your TV or monitor, its HDR capability, the selected HDMI input and copy-protection support determine what signal can be shown.
- The PS5 output: The console selects an output mode that your display reports as supported. That output setting does not increase the resolution of the video source.
Sony says the PS5 detects a TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. A 4K output therefore means the console is sending a 4K-format signal; it does not prove that the anime stream itself is 4K. A 1080p episode may be scaled by the playback chain while retaining the detail of its original source.

Fix the PS5 video-output settings first
1. Inspect the current signal
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI-device information.
- Leave Resolution on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to test a supported manual mode.
Menu wording can vary slightly with system software and language. On a compatible 4K television, the signal information should indicate a 2160p/4K mode when the display and HDMI path support it. If Automatic chooses a lower mode, check the television input, receiver or soundbar in the chain, and the HDMI port’s capabilities before forcing a resolution.
2. Keep the HDMI path compatible
Use an HDMI input on the television that supports the features you need. For Netflix Ultra HD playback, Netflix specifies an Ultra HD-capable display and an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 or later. This is a compatibility requirement, not a promise that replacing a working cable will make anime sharper. If the current path already carries 4K HDR from other sources, a new cable is unlikely to be the solution.
3. Do not expect game upscaling features to improve apps
Console features marketed for compatible games, including PlayStation’s PSSR discussion on its resolution guidance, should not be treated as an enhancement for streaming applications. Streaming quality still comes from the app, its source and the display pipeline.

Choose an HDR mode that matches mixed anime libraries
Why “Always On” can change SDR anime
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, the PS5 offers an Always On behavior that converts non-HDR apps to HDR output. Conversion can alter brightness, color and contrast without adding source detail. It is not an automatic upgrade for an SDR episode.
Use “On When Supported” as the baseline
Start with On When Supported. Supported HDR content can use HDR, while unsupported apps remain in SDR instead of being converted. This is a sensible setting for a library that mixes older SDR anime with titles carrying an HDR version.

Calibrate if the image is too dark or highlights look wrong
If HDR content appears dim, washed out or clipped, select Adjust HDR in the same Video Output area and follow the PS5’s calibration prompts. The correct result depends on the television’s panel and picture mode. After calibration, compare a known SDR episode and a title marked as HDR; do not judge the mode from an unlabelled source.
Some viewers prefer the look of converted HDR. You can compare Always On and On When Supported on your own display, but neither setting can create HDR grading that was not present in the source.
Set the streaming app to its highest available quality
Crunchyroll: choose Highest, not a numbered resolution
Crunchyroll’s player quality controls are Highest, Moderate and Data Saver. Open the player’s gear or settings menu and choose Highest when it is offered.
These labels are quality targets rather than guarantees of 1080p or 4K. Crunchyroll uses adaptive bitrate streaming, so the service can still lower quality when network conditions change. “Highest” means the best quality available for that title and playback session, not a fixed resolution that every episode supports.
The cited Crunchyroll troubleshooting article is written for browsers. Its connection advice is still useful as general troubleshooting, but it should not be read as proof of a PS5-specific setting or a guaranteed visual improvement from Ethernet.

Netflix: verify the title, plan and playback settings
Netflix’s PS5 app supports compatible titles up to 4K Ultra HD. To receive that stream, Netflix specifies an Ultra HD-capable television, a plan that includes Ultra HD, a title marked for Ultra HD, a stable connection and an HDMI path with HDCP 2.2 or later.
For HDR on PlayStation, Netflix lists a compatible HDR television, an eligible plan, the playback setting at High and a stable 15 Mbps connection. Open the title details and look for the service’s UHD or HDR badge; the console cannot add either format to a title that lacks it.
Other services
Each service uses its own controls, plan names and title badges. Look for a playback-quality setting in the app, then confirm whether the anime is offered in 4K or HDR in your region and on your plan. Avoid assuming that a control called “High” has the same meaning as Crunchyroll’s “Highest” or Netflix’s “High.”
Stabilize the connection before changing hardware
Why a fast plan can still produce a soft stream
Adaptive streaming responds to moment-to-moment throughput, packet loss and congestion. A speed test taken when the network is idle may not reveal brief drops caused by Wi-Fi interference, a busy access point or another device downloading a large file. The app may lower bitrate during those drops and take time to climb back up.
Run a controlled connection test
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video calls on the network.
- Restart the router and allow it to reconnect fully.
- Move the PS5 or Wi-Fi access point to reduce walls and interference where practical.
- Play the same episode again and watch whether softness occurs at the same timestamp or only during busy periods.
- If possible, connect the PS5 by Ethernet and repeat the test under the same conditions.
Crunchyroll’s guidance recommends staying near a Wi-Fi access point, trying Ethernet, limiting competing downloads and video calls, and restarting the router. Treat Ethernet as a diagnostic for wireless instability, not as a resolution upgrade: a stable Wi-Fi connection and a stable wired connection can deliver the same stream.

What a wired test can and cannot prove
If the picture becomes consistent over Ethernet, Wi-Fi stability is a likely contributor. If it does not change, the cause may be the title’s source, the plan, the service’s current conditions or the display path. A cable does not unlock 4K on a plan or episode that does not provide it.
Bandwidth figures, with their proper context
Netflix publishes more than one set of speed guidance. Keep the figures attached to the page and condition that produced them rather than treating one number as a universal PS5 requirement.
| Netflix guidance | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation page: Ultra HD-marked titles | At least 25 Mbps | A PlayStation-specific condition listed by Netflix for Ultra HD playback. |
| PlayStation page: HDR | 15 Mbps | Netflix’s listed connection figure for HDR playback on PlayStation. |
| General speed table: 720p HD | 3 Mbps | A general recommended stable speed, not a guarantee for every title. |
| General speed table: 1080p FHD | 5 Mbps | A general recommended stable speed, not a guarantee for every title. |
| General speed table: 4K UHD | 15 Mbps | A general recommended stable speed; the PlayStation-specific Ultra HD page uses 25 Mbps. |
The difference between 25 Mbps on Netflix’s PlayStation page and 15 Mbps in its general UHD table is why the figures should not be blended into a single threshold. They are recommendations from different Netflix help pages, not measurements of the PS5’s video output.
Use a symptom-based diagnosis
The image is soft from the first second
- Check the title’s resolution badge and your subscription plan.
- Confirm the app is set to its highest quality option.
- Check the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal and the television input.
- Try another episode or service. If only one release looks soft, its source master or encoding may be the explanation.
The image starts sharp, then becomes blurry
- Test the network while other devices are idle.
- Pause downloads and video calls.
- Restart the router.
- Run a wired Ethernet comparison if feasible.
This pattern is consistent with adaptive bitrate responding to changing conditions, although only the service can confirm the stream selected for a particular session.

- Identify the source. Note the service, episode, plan and any UHD or HDR badge.
- Check the display. Confirm the television’s resolution and HDR capability and select an appropriate HDMI input.
- Inspect the PS5 signal. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, review Current Video Output Signal and leave Resolution on Automatic unless testing a known supported mode.
- Set HDR. Choose On When Supported, then use Adjust HDR if needed.
- Set app quality. In Crunchyroll select Highest; in other services choose the highest available control and verify the title’s badge.
- Remove network competition. Pause downloads and calls, restart the router and repeat the same scene.
- Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Use a wired test only if available, keeping the episode and other conditions unchanged.
- Compare another title. A second anime episode or service helps separate a source limitation from a console or network issue.
Common mistakes that waste time
Forcing 4K output and expecting 4K detail
Manual 2160p output can be useful for testing a compatible display, but it cannot increase the source resolution. Automatic is usually the safer setting because the PS5 negotiates the display’s supported modes.
Using HDR conversion as a universal fix
Always On changes SDR apps to HDR output. It may look preferable on one television and worse on another, and it does not add source detail. On When Supported avoids that conversion for unsupported content.
Buying a cable before checking the path
Netflix requires HDCP 2.2 or later for its Ultra HD path, but many existing televisions and cables already meet that condition. Check the HDMI input and intermediate equipment first. The available guidance does not establish that replacing a functioning cable improves a stable stream.
Judging every show by one episode
Anime masters vary. Film grain, line softness, older scans and deliberate visual effects can look different from a modern digital production even when both are playing at the highest available quality.
What the PS5 can improve—and what it cannot
The PS5 can select a compatible output resolution, pass supported HDR, and provide a stable playback platform. Correct settings can prevent an accidental low-output mode, unnecessary SDR-to-HDR conversion or avoidable network adaptation.
It cannot create missing pixels, replace an SDR master with HDR grading, change a service’s plan entitlement or force a title to stream at a resolution the provider does not offer. Picture quality is ultimately bounded by the service’s source and delivery conditions.
