If Batman: Arkham Knight starts stuttering, dropping FPS, or crashing after you install mods, first disable the newest mod and compare the game in the same scene. Then check for shader conflicts, restore changed graphics settings, and test overlays separately. The right fix depends on whether you have low average FPS, traversal stutter, a launch crash, or a visual problem.
Start by identifying the performance problem
Before changing settings, note what happens, where it happens, and which mod you installed most recently. “Low FPS” and “stuttering” are not interchangeable: the game can have a lower average frame rate, hitch while loading assets during traversal, crash, or show a problem caused by a visual effect.
- Average FPS drop: The game runs more slowly throughout a scene than it did before.
- Traversal stutter: Brief hitches occur as Batman moves quickly through the city, potentially while the game streams assets.
- Crash: The game closes or fails to launch, possibly after a mod, shader injector, or overlay change.
- Visual issue: Effects look wrong, exposure changes, or graphics behave unexpectedly.
Record the scene and symptom, then use the same scene for each comparison. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped rather than relying on impressions from different parts of the game.
Test the newest mod before changing anything else
- Back up saves and any configuration files you plan to alter. Keep a copy outside the game folder so you can restore it.
- Disable or remove the latest mod or preset. If you use a mod manager, use its disable function; otherwise follow the mod author’s uninstall instructions.
- Run the same scene again. Compare the same settings and route, and note whether the original symptom returns or improves.
- Reintroduce changes one at a time. If disabling the latest mod helps, add it back by itself before testing another change. This helps isolate a conflict instead of masking it with several simultaneous tweaks.
For an Arkham Knight stuttering-after-installing-mods problem, this reversible test is a better first move than applying a broad “FPS fix.” Mod combinations and PC configurations differ, so one person’s fix may not address another person’s slowdown.

Check shader presets and injectors for conflicts
If the slowdown or visual problem began after installing a ReShade preset, read that preset’s compatibility notes and check whether another ReShade preset or ENB is active. The Filmic Shaders page on Nexus Mods explicitly says its preset is incompatible with other ReShade presets or ENB. Its author says it should work with skins and gameplay enhancements, but does not guarantee compatibility with every mod.
Disable competing shader tools and test again before removing unrelated gameplay mods. If you use a different preset, do not assume Filmic Shaders’ compatibility notes apply to it; check the specific preset’s instructions.

When a performance preset is an option
The Filmic Shaders author also offers a performance version and claims it can save up to 15 FPS at times. That is the author’s stated maximum, not an independently tested result or a gain to expect on every PC. The page also says this version substantially changes effects and does not preserve the original look. Treat it as a visual trade-off to test, not a universal performance setting.
Restore graphics tweaks and test overlays separately
If you changed INI files or used a third-party graphics/configuration tool, restore the original settings or defaults and compare again. A Steam community troubleshooting guide also recommends disabling overlay programs, such as FPS counters or recording software, to check whether they are involved. These are troubleshooting leads, not proof that an INI edit or overlay is the cause.

Change one thing at a time: restore settings first, then test with third-party overlays disabled. Leave Steam’s overlay status unchanged while checking other overlays, so you can identify which change matters. Re-enable tools individually after the test if the game is stable.
WB Games’ June 23, 2015 PC performance guidance warned against editing the game’s INI files, saying changes could negatively affect performance and stability. That is historical publisher guidance, not a guarantee about every modern configuration or mod. Avoid piling on undocumented tweaks when you are trying to isolate a mod-related issue.

Consider Arkham Quixote only for persistent traversal stutter
If the main symptom is continued stutter during traversal after you have ruled out a newly added mod, shader conflict, custom tweak, or overlay, you could investigate Arkham Quixote. A Steam community troubleshooting guide reports that it may improve traversal performance by recycling textures. This is community advice, not a guaranteed fix.
The same guide reports important caveats: Arkham Quixote uses more VRAM, NVIDIA GameWorks effects cannot be used with it, overlays other than Steam may crash the game, and some areas may have exposure issues. Check that these trade-offs fit your system and preferences before trying it, and follow the mod’s own installation and removal instructions.

Use an SSD only when storage streaming is a plausible cause
An SSD is worth considering when the problem looks like asset-streaming or storage-related hitching, not as a cure for a shader conflict, low average FPS, or mod crash. In its June 23, 2015 guidance, WB Games wrote: “For users that have an SSD available, we’ve noted increased streaming performance when the game is installed to that type of drive.” That observation is historical and concerns streaming performance; it does not establish that installing the game on an SSD fixes every kind of stutter or mod conflict.
Before moving or buying a drive, check that your PC supports its form factor and interface, has a compatible connection or available slot, and has enough capacity. The official observation does not establish a specific SSD model or a performance gain for your current PC.
What Arkham Knight’s old PC updates do—and do not—tell you
WB Games’ October 2015 patch notes reported reduced frame-rate hitches, system-memory and VRAM optimizations, performance improvements across GPUs requiring current drivers, and fixes for HDD hitches. These notes help distinguish historical streaming and hitching problems from other stability issues, but they are not a current settings guide for modern PCs. Keep graphics drivers current for your hardware; do not treat the driver versions mentioned in old guidance as current recommendations.
The patch notes and 2015 advice establish what WB Games reported and addressed at the time. They do not identify the cause of a slowdown introduced by a particular modern mod, nor do they promise a specific FPS result for a current system.
