Steam is a strong choice if you value its community features, Workshop support, reviews, and family tools. Epic is worth using for its claimed free games, Epic Rewards, or a better deal on a particular title. For a purchase, compare the exact game edition, price, refund eligibility, and supported features—not just the store name.
How to choose between Steam and Epic for a specific game
Start with the game, not a blanket preference for one storefront. Store-wide features are useful only when the particular game supports them, and price or edition differences can change which option makes sense.
- Compare the same edition. Check the base game, included DLC, add-ons, and any edition-specific content on both store pages.
- Compare the checkout price. Account for the current discount, regional price, taxes, and any eligible rewards or offer. Neither store is established as always cheaper.
- Check title-level features. Look for cloud saves, achievements, controller support, multiplayer arrangements, and mod compatibility. Epic’s catalog lists some of these attributes; Steam offers platform tools such as Workshop, but the game must support them.
- Check refund eligibility before buying. On Epic, confirm the product’s refundable or self-refundable label; on either store, consider the purchase date and playtime.
- Consider where your household already plays. Friends, existing libraries, and family-sharing needs can make one store more convenient for a particular purchase.
Steam’s store highlights features including Workshop, community discussions, reviews, recommendations, achievements, and controller support (Steam platform overview). Epic’s catalog exposes game-specific attributes such as cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, and controller support (Epic Games Store catalog). Check the game’s listing and publisher information for the exact support available.
Where Steam has the edge
Community, reviews, and Workshop
Steam is a particularly good fit if you want its community features and, for games that support it, Steam Workshop. User reviews and recommendations can also help you assess a game and find others. These platform tools do not mean every Steam title supports Workshop or that mods transfer between store editions; verify support for the specific game.

Household controls with Steam Families
Steam’s documented Steam Families feature supports up to six members and includes game-access management, restrictions, playtime limits and reports, and child account recovery. The exact games available to share depend on Steam’s current rules and the titles in the household’s libraries. See the Steam Families User Guide & FAQ for details.
Steam’s refund baseline
Valve says it will, on request, refund a title requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours. If a request falls outside those conditions, Valve says it can still be submitted for review; approval is not guaranteed. The Steam refund instructions explain how to submit a request.

Where Epic Games Store has the edge
Free games that stay in your library
Epic says a free game you claim remains in your library after the promotion ends. That makes the store useful even if you do not make it your main place to buy PC games. Check Epic’s FAQ for the current giveaway schedule and claim terms; the available games change.
Epic Rewards and title-specific offers
Epic’s FAQ describes Epic Rewards and store offers, but eligibility and terms can change. Check the current program terms and the offer shown for the game before counting a reward toward its value. A discount or reward on one purchase does not establish that Epic is generally cheaper.

Epic’s refund labels and process
For PC and Mac products, Epic’s stated baseline is a refund request within 14 days of purchase—or, for a pre-purchase, within 14 days of release—with less than two hours of runtime. The product must also be marked “refundable” or “self-refundable.” Self-refundable products can be refunded through account transactions; a product marked refundable may require contacting Player Support. See the Epic Games Store Refund Policy.
Those conditions are not a guarantee for every purchase. Epic treats subscriptions, in-app purchases, in-game items, consumable digital items, virtual currency, and gifts differently; some are generally non-refundable under its policy, subject to applicable law. Epic also notes EU statutory withdrawal rights and says it cannot refund purchases made outside Epic checkout. Check the policy and the product’s displayed eligibility for your purchase.

Refund policies at a glance
| Store | Stated PC-game baseline | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Request within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of play. | Valve says requests outside the baseline can still be submitted for review. |
| Epic Games Store | Request within 14 days of purchase (or 14 days after release for pre-purchases) and under two hours of runtime. | The product must be marked “refundable” or “self-refundable”; some purchase types have different treatment. |
Policies, local legal rights, and product eligibility matter. Review the linked rules and the exact product listing rather than treating either baseline as unconditional.
Does the developer revenue split make one store cheaper?
No. A developer’s revenue share does not determine the price a player sees at checkout. Epic’s developer program page says that, starting in 2026, its first $1 million in net revenue per title resets each January 1; the standard 88/12 split applies after that threshold. That is a developer-program term, not a consumer-price promise. Compare the current price and edition on the two store pages (Epic developer revenue-share terms).

Which store should you use?
- Lean toward Steam if Workshop, community features, reviews, recommendations, or its documented Steam Families tools matter most to you.
- Keep Epic in the mix if you claim its free games, use eligible Epic Rewards, or find a better current offer for a game you want.
- Choose title by title when the game is on both stores. Compare edition and add-ons, checkout price, refund eligibility, cloud saves, multiplayer, controller support, and mod compatibility.
You do not need to make a permanent platform choice. A player can use Steam as a main library and still claim Epic giveaways or buy a particular title where its price, edition, or features suit them better.
