Make a compact gaming setup more comfortable by adjusting the chair, monitor, keyboard and mouse as one system before buying anything. Center the screen, keep your input devices within easy reach, and preserve space for your legs. If the desk’s fixed height or limited surface prevents those adjustments, a compatible keyboard tray or monitor support may help.
Start with your chair and leg clearance
Sit with your back supported and your feet resting on the floor or an appropriate footrest. Adjust the chair alongside the desk and input devices: raising the chair to reach a high keyboard is not a good fix if your feet become unsupported or your thighs press against the desk. Keep the space beneath the desk clear enough for your legs.
A suitable chair should support your back and legs, and the desk should leave legroom while allowing the computer components to be placed comfortably. There is no single furniture measurement that works for every person. If a fixed desk height prevents a comfortable position, a footrest or keyboard tray may be worth considering, provided it does not compromise leg clearance.
Position the monitor in front of you
Center the monitor in front of your body so you can keep your head aligned with your torso instead of turning or leaning toward the screen. OSHA’s general workstation guidance places the top of the monitor at or just below eye level. Adjust the height and angle so your head can remain balanced while you play; individual visual needs and screen sizes can affect the best arrangement.

OSHA’s purchasing guide recommends a viewing distance of at least 20 inches between the eyes and the monitor. Treat that as a general design recommendation, not a universal prescription for every screen or user.
A monitor riser or arm may free desktop space or make it easier to adjust screen height and angle. Before choosing one, check the desk’s clamp area and thickness, the monitor’s attachment standard and weight, and the support’s adjustment range. These are compatibility checks, not details established by the general ergonomics guidance.

Keep the keyboard and mouse close
Put the keyboard directly in front of you, with your shoulders relaxed, elbows close to your body and wrists straight in line with your forearms. Keep the mouse near the keyboard so you can use it without repeatedly reaching to the side. Both should be within comfortable reach, with enough usable space for the way you actually play.
If the desk or chair cannot be adjusted to put the keyboard at a suitable height, an adjustable-height and tilt keyboard tray may help. Check that it can hold both the keyboard and mouse, fits the desk, and leaves room for your legs and feet. A tray is only useful if it can be installed without creating a new reach or clearance problem.

Do not rely on a wrist rest to compensate for a keyboard that is too high, too far away or poorly positioned. First arrange the chair, work surface and keyboard so your wrists can stay neutral. Wrist or palm rests may increase comfort for some people, but they are not mandatory and opinions about them vary.
